Lower points or joint ownership?

Okay, folks, here's the scenario.

I want to purchase AKV. Ideally, I want around 150 points, but that requires me to purchase with my parents (which I am willing to do).

Option 2: purchase 100 points, then add on later.

150 points is better for what I want to do, but there is something to be said for being the sole owner.

How hard is it to add on at AKV?

If it matters, I want a contract with some banked 2019 points so I can rent 2019 and 2020 points out (I already have a preplanned 2020 trip, and once a year, give or take, is the goal, so I would want my DVC for 2021). There's a contract right now I love, but I'm trying to wait until I've got my financial ducks in their rows. Are these contracts fairly common?

Do you have a sibling who would inherit part of the 150 points?

Yes, but I would title it as joint with right of survivorship (assuming Florida law does that), so that assuming my parents die before me I would inherit the entire contract.

You could also pre-decease them, in which case your own heirs would not inherit your interest in the contract. Maybe be it’s not a consideration right now but it could be in the future.

This is exactly what I did but for slightly different reasons. I decided 100 it’s was what I needed and when I was talking about buying in my mother said what about me so we got a 150 pt contract. However, initially she thought she would only go every 3 years but now she wants to go every trip so she needs some more points.

We did rights of survivorship. My brother would have no interest in the contract or the ability to pay the dues if she passes before our contract expires. I do all of the trip planning which makes things much easier. Disney planning is too complicated for her so generally she would just prefer me to figure everything out. So I am the only one with a DVC log in and I have the spreadsheet to keep track of points. She also is never going to go without me.

I think the only instance where it could be tricky is if you each are planning separate vacations with the points. It still would be possible but will take a bit more careful planning as to how the points will be allocated. If you chose to wait and add on later that shouldn’t be an issue. AK comes up quite often though I’m not sure of the point sizes of those contracts.

Lower points - it is amazing what lower points can garner depending on the time of year and villa size.

Buying a 150 point contract will likely be a lot cheaper than buying a 100 point contract, and then adding on a 50 point contract, as smaller point contracts tend to sell at meaningfully higher prices. To answer one of your questions, 150 point contracts at AKV can usually be found, but if you are willing to go to 160 points, those contracts come up for sale with regularity at AKV.

I’ve considered that and am okay with that. My DD2 would go to the copurchasers, her grandparents, so I would want them to have full ownership - and I don’t want to saddle her with this at this age anyway.

I’m definitely open to 160. The cost to add on - knowing I want a 6-9 day trip each year - is something that leads me to buying with my parents. I do the planning anyway, and we communicate well, so it’s a dynamic I’m okay with.

I really hope that loaded contract with banked points sticks around. I hope I can find one again!

Is it possible to wait and save up more before buying, so you can do it on your own?

When AKV was first selling I think the minimum new buy in was 160 points, hence the large number of 160 pointers out there. I’ve put my son on all my DVC deeds, he is an adult and an only child and enjoys WDW as much as I do.
If you opt to buy some points now and more later take a look at % of points sold per use year, since it’s simplest to have the same use year for all contracts and going with a popular use year will up your selection when it comes time to buy contract #2. Me, personally, I would purchase my own points. I have no experience but over the years I have seen and heard a lot and I know never to buy anything with anyone. If I can't do something on my own, I won't do it and/or wait until I can.

What is peachy and rosy today might not be tomorrow. Having said that, it's your decision of course. Good luck with it. Let us know how you make out :)

I would say go with your own points, no one knows whats around the corner but the last thing you want is to fall out with family over a DVC contract. Good luck with the direction you take.
