Low light lens suggestions

LOL

This is what happens when we play telephone.

OP is using Nikon, Master Manson mentions Sigma, I start thing of Sigma on the EF mount.....

Thanks for catching me.

:rotfl2: I thought maybe I was just missing something!

Thanks for all the input folks.

To add more complexity (cost) to the mix, it would be preferrable to have some zoom as well. I've checked out Sigma, looks like the only 2.8 lens that will work on the D40 is this one: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3328&navigator=6

Has anyone heard about it, or had a chance to try it out?

Mark: renting is an option, how much do they typically charge to rent a good low light lens. I suspect I'd have to rent for at least a two week period if renting from a local dealer prior to the trip. Are their any rental locations close to WDW? Maybe renting while there is an option. If renting is pricey, I'd be more tempted to buy.

In addition to the Sigma, there is also a Tamron that is really good. And I made sure it was Nikon this time. ;)

Thanks, but unfortunately that will not work on the D40. It is for Nikon, but only AF Nikon. I have a D40 which requires AF-S/AF-I.

Edit: I could be wrong, looking into this lens now. Thanks.

Edit 2: Tamron has a service update on their site that states their lenses will not autofocus on the D40. If anyone knows anything different please let me know.

This is why, in 1985, Canon decided to pi$$ off all their users at once, and get it over with, by introducing a new lens mount. Now, there's no compatibility issues.... LOL

Yes that is the hard call, do you piss everyone off at once, or just select users over time.... I think that eventually all Nikon lenses will have the motors in the lenses, and then this discussion will be moot, until then they have created a headache for their newest users.... not sure that is so good either.

I disagree, the only reason that Nikon should pull the in-body focus motor is to save money on their low-buck cameras. They already have plenty of cameras that work with motors in either place, if they stay on that road, then they're not pissing off their users.

There are millions of Nikon lenses out there that require the in-body focus motor, those lenses aren't going anywhere - and just because at some point all new lenses will be that way is no excuse. There's still plenty of people that like using older and unique lenses on modern cameras, via adapters or however - not everyone wants to just go out and buy brand-new stuff all the time. :)

The lack of legacy lenses is one of the things that, IMHO, has hurt the 4/3rds system (ie, Olympus) so much.

I've said it before - I doubt we'll see Nikon pulling in-body focus motors from anything but their cheapest cameras any time soon. If all their new ones lacked the motor, then I could believe that they've actively trying to kill off the use of those lenses - until then, I believe it's just a cost-cutting measure.
