Low Carb Chat

Bravo! I described what I eat to my doctor after she told me she was thrilled with my weight loss - told her I'd cut out anything processed including grains and sugar. She said, "oh, so you just eat a healthy diet". :rotfl2: I find that when I tell people what I'm NOT eating, rather than the name of the "diet", they tend to keep open minds about it. There have been so many fad diets out there that people kinda cringe when you mention one they don't know much about. But tell them you only eat whole foods and skip the sugar and grain, and that they understand. Definitely talk things over with your doc.

Congrats on your weight loss, disneyeveryyear! pixiedust:

Is it okay if we share favorite recipes here? I'm always looking for new ones, so I figure others are, too.

Hi Kachina.:) I can relate to what you're saying. For the most part I don't mention Atkins anymore. A lot of people have the impression that it's all about gorging on meat and butter and that's absolutely not the case. I simply tell people that I'm controlling my carbs and if they ask additional questions then I share more info.

Yes, please do share your recipes! Share any tips you may have, we can all learn from each other.:thumbsup2

Hi, everyone,
I'm getting ready to embark on the Whole30 program starting tomorrow with my DH. We've never had good eating habits and eat far too many easy carbs and sugars. I'm worried about the challenge of the first couple of weeks and dealing with sugar withdrawal, but hoping we can stay strong. :)

Just checking in and wondering how you're doing.:) Hopefully you're getting over the hump with the sugar cravings. If not, you'll be over it soon.

I won't lie, I used to be terribly "addicted" to sugar. I'd grab an occasional candy bar when in the checkout line, use plenty of syrup on pancakes or waffles, keep plenty of cookies on hand, etc. I'd also grab a slice of toast with butter just for an in-betweener while cooking dinner - and stuff like that.

After starting low carb and during the initial time period of wanting sweets and breads, I'm now a completely different person. I don't find myself anywhere NEAR as tempted as before. Sure, I "see" the candy bars at the store, I occasionally give a thought to bread, but for the most part, not. I find myself more interested in checking out in the checkout line rather than worrying about which candy I'll grab.

The thing I AM having a lot of trouble with is getting enough veggies. I like a lot of different veggies, but my DS13 who is doing this with me, does not. I'm trying to sneak a few in here and there where I can (like hiding finely chopped peppers and onions in the sloppy joe recipe), and I'm serving the few veggies that he does like (green beans, broccoli), but it's not enough. Ugh.

My DH has been watching his carbs since the new year to lose weight. I'm totally on board with that and eating the same things but I'm wondering since I'm a runner and have some long training runs for a race coming up (10 miler) that carbs are something that I need. I don't want to eat totally different from him. Can I just eat like a bagel or banana before/after my runs?

You might find that after supporting your DH since the New Year (how awesome are you for that, btw!) that your body isn't as fond of carb heavy foods like you're describing (especially if your support has gotten you into ketosis). From my experience, it's a matter of trial and error.

Have you tried something like Kashi or oatmeal on your training days?
