I have a call into the Dr now but while I wait...

dd(9) has had a fever of 104 Monday through Wednesday along with all of the symptoms of Influenza. Today it broke and I took her to the Dr because she was coughing like crazy and complaining of stomach pain (muscular?).

Dr. cleared her (no pneumonia) and agreed it was Viral.

Tonight, after seeming fine all afternoon, she is coughing up a fit (even on Delsym) and her temp is now 96.9º F. Weird. She looks crappy. I bundled her up and even put the cat on her and after 20 minutes, her temp was 97.2º F.

Any ideas? Should I be worried? I so wanted sleep tonight but now I need to watch the Popsicle, I guess.

Opinions or experiences please...

My normal temp, and my kid's temp runs about 96 - 97. I wouldn't worry about it, she is on the road to recovery!:thumbsup2

Very few people have body temperatures of 98.6...she's fine! Tuck her in bed, keep her drinking!

Who are you & what are you doing in my house? Honestly, had DD9 back at the doc for 2nd time in less than a week today. The wicked cough is back -- again. Back on the original meds + antibiotic this time. DH & DD13 only had the stomach part -- so far. Me, limping along for 3 weeks now. Sooner or later I have to find the time to get back in to the doc myself.

Ok, Dr. said to call back if I can't get it to rise or if she goes below 95º. :scared1: Ummmm, yeah, I think I would call, thank you very much!

I just never saw a temp that low before!

I tried the hot shower mist and that seems to have helped her some. I just NEED a good night sleep tonight...

Thanks!

Sure hope you did get that sleep last night. After a rough start I did & feel like I haven't in 3 wks. now. DD9 is off to school again, still coughing, but much less & is much more comfortable now, thank goodness.

Hoping the sun peeks out where you are & makes you all feel much better & ready to enjoy spring!

How are you taking her temp? Under the tongue is the best way to get 98.6. But you have to be sure you hold the thermometer in there long enough, that you haven't just drunks something cold, and that the thermometer is way up under the tongue. Rectal temps will be higher. Axillary (armpit) temps will be lower. And ear temperatures are not accurate at all. (They are great for telling /if/ there is a fever, but you often get really wacky high or low numbers with those things)

I wouldn't worry about it either. My normal body temp is right around 97°. For some reason when I am nearly over sinus stuff I go through now and then, my temp dips to the upper 95 range to low 96 range. Not sure why. I just bundle up and keep warm. So I definitely wouldn't worry if she's right around 97

The temp was taken the same way (under the toungue) as I was getting 104 just two days ago. :(

She did get some sleep. :) Her temp was back to 99.5º this morning but came right down with Motrin. I did send her to school as she was acting fine and needs to get some work to catch up on over the weekend. I did tell her to talk to the nurse if she starts feeling crappy but hopefully, she'll be like yesterday, and be fine.

Why are 9 year old girls embarassed about everything: coughing, needing a tissue, stuffy nose, going to the nurse? :confused3

My normal temp is right at 97 too. (my DS13 was born with a low body temp, and they were all panicked until I told them that mine was low too)

My DS 14 has the same virus, started Sunday night , high fever , cough , body aches. Fever finally broke Wednesday and now his cough is worse than ever and a low temp 96-97. He still has some body aches too, especially his back but, I think that's from coughing. He says his ankles hurt the most....weird. I will be glad when he is back to normal!! Hope everybodys kids get well soon !!

I remember a few months ago DS7 had a temp so low it wouldn't read on my digital ear thermometer. First it was at 95 degrees, then it would just beep "lo". He had just got done beating strep throat w/vomiting and a high fever, and I was freaking out. I called his Dr. and he said since he was just getting over a high fever it was normal. Sure enough it was back up in the morning to normal........but it was scary.

That is exactly what my DS did last week! Raging fever (105) but once it broke it dipped way below normal and stayed there for several days. Oh man that was a long, sleepless week! :scared:

It's not uncommon for children to have a "rebound" effect when they have had fever reducers for several days. Ibuprophen especially will do it. After a couple days of fighting fever with drugs, suddenly the fever "over responds". Instead of going down to normal, around 98, it keeps going down to the 96s. Stop giving fever reducers and the dramatic temperature fluctuation usually settles down .

Hope your babies feel better soon.
