Does anybody use this word? I'm watching masterpiece mystery and Allen Cummings does the intro and uses the word. It sounds so smarmy. All I can think of is the SNL skit with Will Ferrell. Ha

Yeah, smarmy is a good word for "lover". Hearing it used is like nails on a chalkboard.

Ugh. Hate that word used alone. The only time I hear it is in cheesy jokes or older generation folks or movies.

Funny, I use "lover." Usually when I'm ticked, but not exactly sarcastically. I've said it in run of the mill conversation. I've never referred to my husband as "my lover" in conversation with anyone else, it's just what I say to him now and then. It's just a word. I don't do baby talk, so that's not it either.

Ick, the word kind of grosses me out.

I went on a date with a guy who said "Want some chicken wings, lover?"

Nope. Leave the wings. You can go.

Only in jokes, or in a sarcastic manner with my friends. "Well hello, lover.

It does seem swarmy!

That was the first thing that popped into my head!

DH and I only ever use the word when one of us has done something incredibly stupid and the other is reacting with sarcasm. As in, "Why yes, lover, the eggs DO belong in the cupboard, good call!"

A girl I'm friends with on FB constantly refers to her husband as her lover. "I'm going on a date night with my lover." etc. It's too descriptive for me. I get that you probably have sex with your husband, but I don't need you to bring it up.

I heard Bill Maher use in last week when talking about "Mary Cheney marrying her long-time lover this week." I cringed.

A "lover", to me, is someone you have a very one-dimensional relationship with. So when Maher made his reference, I sort of thought it diminished the relationship that probably have. But other people feel much different about the word so I try not to get to nutty about it.:goodvibes

I really like the word 'lover' in certain context. I've called my husband 'lovah' more than a few times for emphasis. I really liked the use of the word when Carrie Bradshaw used it in 'SATC', and she said,"lovah." One of my girlfriends uses it with the rest of us when she smooches us hello and I LOVE it! In the context of "John Edwards' lover is going to be on The View today; not so much.

It's one of those words I hate...makes my skin crawl...in any context!

Trashy and smarmy!

I love Carrie and SATC but I remember being skeeved when she used Lovah. I wonder if I am more bothered by it now because of the SNL skit. When I hear it I think of that pretty much instantly and it was so over the top.
