Love/Hate?

I have noticed from posts that the Polynesian seems to be a real "love it or hate it" place. I personally LOVE it, and always say that when I retire someday, I am going to work there! I love the grounds, the music, the location. I loved it as a kid and I like that while beautifully maintained, it is essentially the same as when it opened.

Dear hubby hates it. Not just "take it or leave it," but really dislikes it. He thinks it is tacky and outdated and very "1970's." I don't understand this, but this is a man who pulls the Mickey ears off our van antenna when he drives, so I don't put much value in his Disney opinions... :)

I was curious if anyone else has a "love/hate" resort. Perhaps Boardwalk? Maybe Contemporary? In our family it is definitely the Poly!

I don't have a love it/hate it resort at WDW (although I DO love the Poly). I just wanted to say that your DH is not alone in pulling the mickey ears off the car antenna before he drives it. I generally pull ours off, too, if i'm driving my DW's car. I just can't get that masculine feeling with Mickey grinning from my antenna. In fact, last summer I pulled them off, my DW made me put them back on and I didn't put them back on well enough--so when we went through the car wash, Mickey went flying through the car wash brushes, never to be seen again.
Needless to say, i felt bad.

With our family, it's not a resort, it's all of WDW itself!

Our first trip to WDW was in 1996, with DH, 2 DS's, DD and me. While DH gets motion-sickness, he still participated in the trip, and was able to ride a few rides like POC, and watch the shows. He agreed that while WDW was "horribly expensive" it was probably justified in it's prices due to the numbers of CM's keeping the place immaculate! During the trip, he made comments about coming back, and I did convince him to return in 1998 and 2000. After that first trip, though, he has told anyone who will listen how much he hates WDW, and he only goes when coerced!!:( DH is a very frugal person, and I have to believe it's not WDW itself, but the money issue that he really hates!!

Long story slightly less long, DD(now 14) and I take our "girls only" trips to WDW (where DD says she wants to die!) a couple of times a year, while DH rolls his eyes and mentally figures up how much more savings we would have if I didn't have this mental handicap!!

p.s. We love the Poly, and can't understand anyone who hates it - are they nuts?!:wave2:

My Dh & I bought DVC @VWL. We stayed at the WL (we all Loved it) in October of 2002. Just recently I mentioned to him that I really would like to try out our Home resort as we have yet to stay there. He proceeds to tell me that he has no interest to stay there because he doesn't think he'd like it.

I don't get it because we all loved staying at the WL??? He said he'd stay @ the WL but not VWL.

Well, MY husband is the cheapest man on the planet, and he can take or leave WDW, to him it's a theme park and nothing else. He also mentally adds up everything in regards to our WDW vacations and lets me know how much money we are "throwing into Micky's hands" when there are other places we could go to. Perhaps that's true, But he's also a good man, and since his fabulous wife lets him go camping w/ the boys about 5x per yr., mommy gets to go where ever she wants:cool:

Mac3, the VILLAS end of the Lodge is wonderful. Maybe one time you can peek into a room that is not occupied and dh will change his mind. The studio kitchenette is great, and the bigger rooms -- one and two bedroom -- are truly gorgeous. He won't want to go back wihtout staying in a villa! That end of the Lodge is also very peaceful and while farther from the pool, it's right on top of the bus stop. I love it! :)

K&A&C'smom and ltlpixie - I think our DH's should all get together for their own trip while we all go to Disney! My husband also keeps a running total on every penny I spend at WDW. It has gotten to the point where I dont take him anymore! Luckily I only live 2 hours away. I take my two DD's8. They call it our girls trip. The three of us are WDWgirls. The only Disney trip he doesnt complain about too much is Disney Cruise - he loved it. I'll never give up my Disney trips!:earsgirl:

DH and I used to have this type of relationship, he generally tolerated WDW and I wanted to go 3 times per year!! Well, we've come to a compromise which is good for both of us. We now go once per year (DH thinks once is enough) but we now stay for two weeks. This way, I get a HUGE WDW fix, and DH likes the relaxing time we get to have by being there so long. This way, if we (he) doesn't want to go to a park that day, no big deal, we're going to be here for a while. It really doesn't bother me either, because it really does make it for a nice and relaxing vacation!!! So for now, we have found a middle ground we're both happy with.

For our trip last August we were going to stay at WL. But, when the FTP came out, we changed to the Polynesian. My dd had fallen in love with this resort and since it was such a good deal, we went for it. Did we fall in love with it as a family? No. In fact, my poor dd didn't feel it was as magical as POR. Now, you have to remember that that is where she stayed the first two times she went. But, we liked the Polynesian just fine. Loved the proximity to MK and to Epcot via the monorail at TTC. The Polynesian will always have a fond spot in my heart since it was at the end of our stay there, that my dh decided to look into DVC!! He did say that he would buy if we could get Boardwalk. We did and everyone is happy. Waiting to see if we 'fall in love' with Boardwalk. Have never actually stayed there. But the way I figure is...what the heck. I'm at WDW.

WDWgirls

I am soooo envious of you, living in FL!!! I have been in love with FL since our first trip to Key West in 1993 (drove all the way from MO:sunny: ) and have almost convinced DH that we will move there in the future!! Then, I will be just a few hours from the mouse!!::yes::

Don't blame all the husbands! Our first trip was when our son was 2 and we were still in college making $7/hour! That is when I mentioned the costs, etc. We also drove down, which I hated.

We didn't go again until my son was 7 (we were in alot better shape financially!), and we had an 8 month old daughter. From that point on I was hooked. My son had a great time, and as a family we didn't argue once! Now that IS MAGIC. Anyway, we go once a year now, with future thoughts of going during the holidays. Yeah, cost is still there, but worth it. So at first, I hated it, but now I LOVE it.

I guess we do, but we havent stayed at these places together.

I stayed at the Contemporary when I was 5. To me that IS Disney. I would like to stay there(in the tower), but DH sees no appeal there at all.

We checked out the WL on our last trip. DH thought it was really nice and was pointing out all the cool stuff to me, but I wouldnt want to stay there. I admit its a beautiful place, but I would have a hard time going to Florida and staying in a place like that. If it were in the mountains or Canada, Id love to stay there. ;)

k&a&c'smom - I'm originally from upstate NY - we moved down here in 2001. Being a Fl resident makes it nice and easy to get my Disney fix! Its not only the close proximity but also the Fl resident rates and Fl res seasonal passes. Its also nice because when we came to Disney from NY we were always rushing around trying to "do it all" - as a Fl res you can take your time and enjoy because if you dont do it this time there is always next month! I hope you get your wish to live near the mouse!!

Thanks, Michelle!!!!

We really do love FL - have driven all over the state, and we really are making plans to move there in a few years. My kids are in HS, and my husband owns a business here, so it will take a while, but we want to shake the snow off our boots and come to the Sunshine State for good!!!!

How did you determine what city to live in? That is something we are starting to think about.:sunny:

Well I guess the Poly is for us - kind of. I had always wanted to stay there and my DH did not. Nothing about it appealed to him. Well we finally stayed there and it wasn't all I thought it would be. I absolutely love the lobby, grounds, restaurants, monorail access, and beach, but I just really didn't love staying there. My DH still hates it.

I would love to stay at the CR in a tower room (like camcolt), but my DH has no desire to stay there. He would be perfectly happy staying at the BW on every trip.

I thought my husband was the only one. Not only is it the $$$ but he says "Its TOO happy there!" Last trip he didnt want to go anywhere but stay at the pool at the Beach club and convinced the kids that all that walking was wasting our relaxing time. I was furious and went on the rides with the kids while he whined. So our last trips have been to caribbean islands, where yes they are great and relaxing, but want the kids to enjoy disney while they are still in the wonderment stage (is wonderment a word?? i dont think so) Anyway in 4 wks we will be at Disney again yay and staying at AKL for the first time. Ive already heard this from him.......its too expensive, its too far from the parks, i hate those busses....and on and on. Oh well he can sit and sulk, kids and i will have fun, they are finally tall enough to go on ALL the rides!!!

Well, you should feel terrible! What a horrible thing to do!! Your poor wife, what she must put up with!!!! By the way, I'm totally kidding, I'm the "k" in skfulkers. :D

My love resort is the Poly, but my love location is the Epcot resort area. If they could just move the Poly next door to the Boardwalk, I'd be in heaven! :D

By the way, Goofy4Tink, you will LOVE the Boardwalk Villas--they are amazing!!

Our family is just the opposite. I'm the husband and the Disney freak, my wife can take it or leave it and would prefer to leave it. I think she hates the crowds and the expense of it and she would rather just sit on a nice beach all week and chill. I can take about a day of that, then I get bored. I always seem to find the lone jellyfish too. Luckily, I've got three little boys that tilt the odds in my favor, they love it too.

We've gone every other year or so for the past 10 years and are going again this summer. She begged me last time in 2002 that we would take a break from Disney for awhile. Unfortunately for her, I'm turning 40 this year and guess what I want for my birthday ::yes:: . She knew it was coming I think. Anyway, she is starting to come around, I'm slowly turning her to the good side, and she does enjoy the time with the boys there. Now if I can only get her to look at DVC. Hmmmn. My time may be running out though. She's talking trips out west (Yellowstone and Badlands, are there any rides or fireworks?) and trips to Washington DC, etc. You know historical and educational stuff. Hey, isnt that what Epcot is for?

Well, I have a trip booked at the Poly LV this trip. I have read so many mixed views on this resort that I am going to see for myself. I really want see the most beautiful castle each and every night and I think that this is the best resort for that. I'm not exactly sure about the decor (we have been to a character breakfast in the past) but I am willing to try it. As for the husband thing, he always does what I want to do. He may give some gripe about it at first but then he comes around. He enjoys Disney as much as I do....well, just about as much. He dosen't spend his spare time looking on these boards like I do. But, he does look forward to our trips. Afterall, what will my children remember the most???? MICKEY! Yep thats right! I am dragging some friends with us this time and I hope that the Poly won't let me down because I have told them so much about this resort and how great it will be. I JUST HOPE SO!

We are all on the right track here. My fondest memories from when I was a kid are my Disney memories. They are funny and wonderful and I can clearly remember never wanting to leave for home. My family was a bit, let's say "dysfunctional," and yet somehow when we were at Disney we were all happy. At least that's how I remember it!

Even though I would go if I had no children, making memories with my kids is a big part of what these trips are about. And even my crazy parents -- still married -- love the trips with the 3 generations. I think my DH knows that, even though he is a little "Mickeyed out!"
