Love/Hate of your dress

Hey guys,
Sometime ago I read an article in a bridal magazine about hating your dress. Well, not exactly hating it. The lady was talking about how she bought her dress too soon and without trying on enough dresses. She explained the stages of love, hate, and acceptance of her dress. I was just wondering if any of you have experienced the same thing, and what did you do about it? I will admit I am one of them. I bought my dress a long time ago, and have had the ups and downs of I love it/I hate it. I have thought about switching it to another dress, but I can't justify paying that much. Plus, the dress is not that bad anyways (for now that is ).

I know the feeling...but I think I need to add a qualifier here. I did not purchase a wedding gown. I bought a simple cotton gauze dress to wear for my wedding. I liked the way it looked online, but didn't care for the fit when it finally arrived. So I took it to a seamstress to have it altered. I still didn't like it, but it was too late (and too costly) to go looking for something else.

I'm glad it looks okay in our pics...but it's kinda sad to think that I really didn't like my wedding dress!

I went through this.

My problem was that when I bought my dress I went in the store knowing it was the one I was gonna buy, so I didn't try any others on. NONE!

After a few months I thought, maybe that I made the decision to quickly and should have gave others a shot. So I went back and tried a few more on, and I am glad I did, because it solidified my first decision even more.

I picked that first dress for a good reason, and it took me second guessing and trying others on to realize it.

Always go with your gut, it leads you the right way everytime.

I'm worried about finding a dress too early because of this, I am the most indecisive person that ever lived so choosing is going to be a nightmare! I hope I try one on and it just screams "I AM THE ONE!" because that hasn't happened yet!

I've posted before about how I waited until the last possible minute to order my dress. Truth be told, as I was trying on dresses in the couple years prior to the wedding, nothing really screamed at me "this is the one!". I had seen a gorgeous DB dress here on a DIS bride and went to try it on. I thought it was the one. When the time came that I was running out of time to order, I had a small panic attack that it wasn't "the one" and I should try on a few more just to be sure. Hence "happening upon" the Essense of Australia trunk show, talking to the rep about what I was looking for, finding the *perfect* gown (well, it was a bit more involved than that, but they did have THE dress), ordering it, and well the rest is history! I still look at my awesome wedding pics and know that I wouldn't have picked a different dress, even with looking at some of the newer things out there...it was perfect!

could I see pics of the dress? that sounds like exactly what I want and I found one line that is beautiful but I'm afraid to order it cause I know it will look completely different on me as compared to the the 120 pound model in the photo of it!

This is an interesting thread - If you could tell me the magazine the article was in, I'd love to read it.

This is a dilemma I'm kind of facing now. My wedding date is in 2 years. I am a planner type person so I've definitely started researching what I want to do and have started to plan out some things. I read in many magazines that you shouldn't shop for your dress until your one year away but should have it before 7 months so you can have all the necessary alterations - I'm sure there slightly different timelines for each magazine.

My problem is I'm too years out and I'm very excited about shopping for a dress but I know styles are going to change and It's too early.
However, I am so indecisive when it comes to big event dress. My Jr. prom I wanted a princess dress because I wanted the red, sleek and sexy for Sr. Prom, I found a gorgeous mermaid style read dress that i loved, held off because I wanted red for sr. - I bought a sleek & sexy Backless, sparkly black dress instead. For Sr. Prom i wanted a red princess dress because I didn't get it for Jr. and because I wanted to wear red (I'm way too specific I know!), I quickly learned that Princess dresses don't come in red, and found a red dress that was absolutely stunning with rhinestones beading all down the back and into a small train. Shopping for the sr. prom dress took an entire day from 9:00am until 9:30 pm when they finally locked the door and we shopped in three different states. (just half hour drives really each way)

Now for my wedding day, my heart is set on a princess because I never got it, but already I found a mermaid style dress I'm in love with. I found some princess dresses I like, but only certain details from each dress.

Do I try on the mermaid dress even though its early? Do I wait to shop and hope that if I don't find a princess dress I can get the mermaid dress later?
Do I shop now since I'm such a picky person and hopefully I won't find a dress I love now and then hate it later?

Do I just stop being so picky and shut up and realize everything will just be fine...

So complicated...

I ordered the dress from Silhouettes (this was 2 years ago). And I may still have a pic of that 120# model in it at home (but I'm not sure). You can check out my pics HERE to see what it looked like on me (after alterations).

for my wedding the dress i found was "THE" dress....i still tried on others, but my mind was set.

I think you should find the "idea" of what you want & try on several dresses, even if it doesnt looklike what you want on the rack....it might surprise you when you put it on. Keep an open mind

Styles do change, but some looks are classic and can be done any time, but some are to dated..if you buy early, unless you LOVE it, stay clear of those

Right now,for my VR, my challenge is that I see PARTS of dresses i like but not all on the same dress..its frustrating .& like most girls I want to get into shape & avoid costly alterations

Im just gonna keep ano pen mind and watch my time/date & bookmark or print ones i will keep in mind when it comes to crunch time

Thats not a bad idea ....to keep a journal with ideas, photos, etc..it might help

FYI: most bridal salons will give you a hard time if you try to order a dress under 3 months, but some can do it, with a rush charge....happened to my friend, but it was worth the $85 rush fee

I was worried about this as well...and while this isn't a direct response to what you are posting it is more advice to pople buying their dresses. I had looked at sooo many online and was tempted to just order one I liked early on but I didn't. I waited until the 8 month mark got up the guts and went to try on dresses. I can not say how happy i am that i had waited. The dresses I was looking at 2 years ago were nothing like the dress I wound up with. I changed my mind a few times and in the end went with a dress which wasn't the style nor the color i thought i would have.

The truth is the best way is to go to a salon with someone you trust and try alot on...what looks flattering on you,is confortable and makes you feel like a bride may be very different than you had originally imagined. This is coming from someone who wanted a slim aline dress in ivory satin and bought a beautiful white satin/organza ballgown! I wouldn't have it any other way now-I love my dress.

I think if you hate the dress and have time/money to resolve the issue than you should...but if it is something you like but are unsure of the fit maybe it can be altered?

Well, the article was in either Brides or Modern Bride. I am not sure which, but it was an older issue (at least 6 months if not more).
The real reason I think that I had the love/hate relationship with my dress is because the wedding plans have changed so much. It started out being a big wedding at home, then to an immediate family only wedding at home, and now it is a close friends and immediate family wedding at WDW. Each wedding really changed what kinda dress I would want. I didn't want the big dress with 6 guests at the wedding. The same goes with the large wedding. I didn't want the "destination" wedding dress for a 150 guest celebration. Now, I really do like my dress. It is perfect for the wedding I am having. I know that you should wear what you want to wear, but also keep in mind how comfortable you will feel wearing a ball gown if you are doing a simple ceremony. My own little bit of advice is have your wedding style set in your mind before shopping. Your wedding style may be a decision factor in you dress style.
I do have to admit that I am curious about the Disney wedding dress collection though.

wow, thanks for that bit of info! I have six months until my wedding and I know I"m cutting it close on the dress ... but honestly, I just don't like trying on wedding dresses! haha... I don't know what's wrong with me.. I mean, every girl is supposed to love trying on dresses right?

anyway, I"m giving myself like two weeks or something and I have to get SERIOUS about it!

i had seen many pretty gowns before, and saw many pretty ones afterwards, but my gown, for me, was always THE ONE.

i just got back from my wedding, and looking through my photos i can say that my gown is, was, will always be THE ONE.

Guess i did it a little different...I picked a designer first...I knew she had an avg. of a year to produce one of her collection dresses and even if i didnt know exactly which dress i wanted I knew i had to have my name down ...It took about three meeting after that to come up with the dress...

Honestly if you have no idea...i think you should try on everything under the sun and then decide what makes you happy...its never to early to look (well its good to have the groom first).....if your questioning your choice…keep looking

The dress is Amalia Carrara...its the same company as Eve of Milady...working with them i could change things that dress shops couldnt...sounds silly but I like to twirl and normally all the material and fabric makes the dresses heavy.... they dont spin well but they found a way to attach the skirt with pleats so it would...

Its the silly little things that make the day perfect

I'm still 10 months away from my wedding, but I already have my dress. I actually found it on ebay. A girl was selling it new because she had changed her mind and decided to have a less formal wedding. The pictures that she had up were awful, the description left something to be desired.. but there was just something about the listing that kept calling out to me. I finally got it using the buy it now feature. I reasoned that when I got it, if I didn't like it, I could resell it for more than I gave for it.


When it come, I fell absolutely in love with it. I can't imagine myself in any other dress!

I think you do have to try on lots and lots of wedding gowns. I shopped for mine 7 months before the wedding. I kept putting it off because everything I saw was strapless, which just isn't me, or low back, which I didn't want. Finally, I knew it would take 4-6 months to get the gown so I went with my mom (one of our last days together ) to a bridal boutique where she lived and I tried on dozens of gowns. I thought for sure I wanted something simple, covered in lace, no train, maybe long sleeves. Well, once I started trying them on I realized quickly that was just not "it" and my consultant pulled other gowns for me. I must have tried on 20-25! When I tried mine on, I knew it was The One. Off-the-shoulder, A-line ballgown, semi-cathedral train, with intricate beading - not what I thought I wanted. I came out of the dressing room and my mom knew it was The One too. Funny thing, I had clipped a picture of the gown and had it in my planning notebook but didn't even realize it! The designer was also able to add material to the top of the back so it wasn't so low, which just made it more perfect for me. I was so convinced I'd get something straight and lacey. You just never know - try on lots of styles, even things you wouldn't expect to like, and you will find The One!
