Lots of Cancellations/Availability ?

Back in March/April I was checking availability at HH for weekend of June 15 as I was planning a quick surprise 3-4 night getaway for me and DH anniversary.

Nothing was available (studio or 1-bed) and I didn't wait list as it would've involved borrowed points and I didn't want to risk not getting anything booked and having those points stuck in this UY. So i went ahead and booked a non-DVC/non-Disney related weekend.

Today I was on the member site and on a lark checked HH availability and I was surprised to see studios and 1-bedrooms available!

Just wondering if lots of people cancel kind of last minute? Like I said I would've wait listed, but just didn't want to take the chance!!

I think many book, "hoping" they can go and then reality sets in and you see cancellations.

Its other things than the economy. We are sitting on a Boardwalk Grand Villa in August that we might not use - my brother in law is terminally ill. And if we use it, chances are good it will be me and two kids in a Grand Villa. With hundreds of members staying at each resort each night, you have broken legs and ill relatives and divorces and job loss and new babies and moving cross country - lots of reasons that vacation suddenly becomes not important and the room becomes available - some of them even good, happy reasons.

That's true, anything can happen at any time to alter plans!

We'll just have to try for HH another time, and I won't be afraid of wait listing (as long as I'm not borrowing points!)

I think there are two other reasons that might account for late cancellations.

First, I think with Disney more so than other destinations, people get a lot of value just out of having a vacation booked. Combine that with flexible cancellation policies and it becomes very easy to book a stay first and then worry about everything else later.

Second, given the high level of demand, it makes more sense to book a vacation at 11 or 7 months out even if there is only a slim chance that you are actually going to go. Better to have a reservation and not need it than to need one and not have it.

I think HH is also a hard place for CRO to sell for cash. Which may mean they (a) return unrented units to DVC or (b) won't try to sell those late cancellations.

Why do you think it is a hard sell for cash may I ask? Is it the pricing? Just curious.

We stayed there one October on a Disney Visa Special. If they offer these specials, I guess they have a hard time getting guests at the regular price. I don't remember what we payed, but we liked the resort and we now own 142 HHI points!

Because outside of the Disney fan base folks don't even KNOW there's a Disney option at HHI.

Disney pricing tends to be a little high and there are lots of options for villa rentals there that in the eyes of some have a better locaiton (AKA as on the beach, walking distance to the beach etc..)
