Lots of ? and concerns about transportation

Not sure if I should post this here or at the Disability forum. K..so..we are staying in a cabin the end of Feb. There will be me, DH, DS 13, DGS 5, and my Mom who is 82. Now she is pretty mobile so we do not need a handicapped room but she WILL be in a scooter every day. We will have a car but I can not imagine how difficult it would be to load and unload while taking the scooter apart every time we go to the parks so that leaves bus transportation. I am very concerned about having to go in and out of the busses sometimes twice and I am hearing bad things about the bus transportation as it is... help me please to feel better about this. I want to do what would be the easiest of course..any suggestions? TIA- Julie

Definitely use the buses. Last year I was unfortunately injured in the Magic Kingdom and ended up in a wheelchair for the remainder of the trip. The bus drivers were great. The wheelchairs and scooters are locked down while on the bus, and the bus lowers to allow driving onto them. Have no fear -- they will take care of you!

Last December, we took my Mama and FIL with us to Disney for their first trip. We rented two scooters from Alex @ Apple Scooters (AWESOME price and service!!)

We left the scooters outside beside the motorhome, plugged in to charge.... took them every day to the interior bus stop, got on the bus. Took it to the outpost or the marina, and then boarded either a bus or a boat. Disney buses make it REALLY easy to negotiate, neither of my parents had ever been on a scooter before, but they adapted quickly, and it sure made life easy.

We had no issues with Disney busses - hope your trip goes as smoothly as ours did!!

DH uses a scooter and we stay at Ft. Wilderness all the time. The same as previous, we leave it outside the camper with a gas grill cover over it to charge. We, however, do not use the internal buses at the Fort. One of us rides the scooter on the sidewalks either to the Outpost bus stops or the Marina, while the other one takes the golf cart or a bicycle.

That way, only one load and unload on the bus.

Busses are super, as are the drivers. We take three wheelchair children every year and always use the busses and the boats. Rarely a problem, sometimes a delay waiting for the right bus, but we're on vacation. There's always people to watch or adventures to talk about or plans to make. I hate to think about driving to the parks, finding a space, then getting into the park from there. The busses and boats take you almost right to the entrance.

My husband and I both have use scooter at disney. Staff has always been wonderful. Once or twice we had to wait for a second bus.

One morning, really early, we wanted to go to the Contemporary for something, I forget what. We went through the marina line and when the big boat came to go to the MK.... the castmember said "y'all come on over here, we'll take you to the contemporary!!"

Sure enough, they got on the boat, and when we got to the Contemporary dock, the boat was way too high, not enough people on board to make it sit low enough in the water that we could get the scooters off..... no problem. Over the loudspeaker... "folks, if you wouldn't mind scooting over to the dockside seats for just a second, we don't want this woman doing any jumps to get off this boat!!"

Relieved my Mama's concerns right away, and made just another memory of Disney for her... how kind people were to them.

The bus drivers were one of the things I loved on our recent trip. My husband has a very bad knee and walks with a very noticable limp. Often, the bus drivers would lower the bus to make it easier for him to get on and off.

Transportation is so great...in may when my in laws were here, my MIL got ill on a bus, due to her problem with motion sickness. The transportation boss at DD overheard us and gave us all a ride back to the resort in a regular van, to save us from going back to the resort to get the car and come back to get her. He even refunded the money I paid for a wheelchair at DD for her.
