LOST SEASON 3 **Official** Discussion/Speculation Thread (No Spoilers)

I really enjoyed this episode even though it was confusing. The Desmond character is really interesting IMO and has gotten me very interested in the show once again.

As for what happened, it seemed like he was in a loop of sorts, didn't it? I wonder if it could happen again somehow?

I'm looking forward to getting some answers next week. And seeing Sawyer again too. :)

Oh, does anyone know who the lady in the jewelry store was?

She was in a movie called "Waking Ned Devine" which I loved. I am sure she has been in other projects, but that is my most memorable one.

ETA: She was also in "The Others". I can't believe I forgot that one. Another one of my faves.

So Charlie's sign said his middle name is Hieronymus. Here's what wikipedia says about that:

"Hieronymus machines were mockups of real machines (patented by their inventor, Dr. Thomas Galen Hieronymus) which allegedly worked by analogy or symbolism, being directed by psi or ESP powers.

As an example, one could create a receiver or similar device, with prisms and vacuum tubes represented by their cardboard or even schematic representations. Through the use of mental powers, such a machine would function as would its "real" equivalent.

The closely related "Heuronymous machines" appear in an Indian text called Jantar Mantar. Here it alludes to these machines as self-hypnotic devices that can raise the mental powers of a human being by many orders of magnitude "

So, I'm thinking that it was a dream. The Charlie in the dream acted just as the real Charlie would. But maybe it means that the island Charlie (and everyone else on the island) is a figment and that they aren't actually doing anything. Or maybe its a sign for the island is functioning like a "hieronymus machine." More questions than answers, once again...

Not sure if there's any significance, but I find it odd that two weeks in a row we find out that a character has been on the island for 3 years.

I was thinking memory more than dream. I just remember all these discussions about memories in class back in college about how many "details" we get wrong when we rely on memory (discussion about how unreliable eyewitnesses are in court even when they have the best of intentions and think they're telling the whole truth) So while he was remembering parts of his past, he was filling in these blanks.

Or maybe somewhere between memory and dream - maybe a lucid dream where you have a little bit of control over what happens in the dream?

intheresting that she was in a movie called the others :lmao:

especially since the first thing dh said when she started talking to desmond was "she's an other"

she was in star trek too.....

oh according to imdb she's been in a TON of stuff http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001217/

interesting theory about Charlie's middle name!!

Very interesting episode. I really like Desmond. The thing at the end about Charlie makes me wonder if he's the next to go.

I was wondering about the end of last season when the guys call Penny. How does that all fit into the present. I figured she is looking for Desmond. Did she find out about the island somehow?

I'm also confused about last night.

Do you think Desmond is reliving his life over or do you think he can just see his future and others' futures and has not lived it yet? Either way, he knows what is going to happen. So, I'm a little confused on why when he met Jack he didn't tell him not to get on the plane. He obviously knew what was going to happen because he told Jack he would see him in another life. I guess we're to assume he didn't tell Jack, because no matter what he did Jack would end up on the island, but why then does he keep trying to save Charlie's life?
Also, how come Charlie doesn't remember meeting Desmond? I would think someone predicting it was going to rain would stand out in your mind and then also predicted he would end up on an island. Why wouldn't Charlie remember that or why hasn't Desmond told Charlie about their prior meeting? Jack remembered Desmond and his interaction with Desmond wasn't as significant as Charlie's interaction.
I know I'm rambling, but as usual, after every episode I have more questions than answers;)

I think that part of Desmond's situation is that he can't really stop what is meant to happen. The lady explained that when the guy with the red shoes was crushed and later Desmond explained it to Charlie. I wonder too why he keeps saving Charlie unless it's because Charlie is meant to die while Jack was not. Or something. ;)

The guy with the red shoes being crushed is like The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch. Although I doubt that's significant. I think that's why she said it was an interesting fashion choice.

I'm wondering if maybe Desmond was strapped down and being force fed images of his life, kindof like Carl (Alex's boyfriend) was?

I didn't even make the correlation. That's the second reference to the Wizard of Oz then. The first was Ben when he said his name was Henry Gale and came there by balloon.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Henry Gale. So maybe it's more significant than I thought, although maybe it's just that the Lost writers like WoO.

Fionnula Flanagan was also in a wonderful series on Showtime called Brotherhood.

If nobody got my Bill Murray reference, Desmond's situation is sort of like the movie Groundhog Day where Murray's character keeps applying things he learns from his each cycle of the repetion of the same day over and over. In the end, Bill Murray breaks the cycle and gets the girl. Maybe Desmond gets Penny.

I didn't like last night's episode at all, and I'm starting to lose interest in Lost. How can they hope to hang onto viewers? First they take off 2-3 months and promise "blockbuster" episodes when they return. Well, these last 2 episodes didn't make me want to keep watching. I'm tired of watching this show and saying "huh" at the end every single week. Why can't they throw us a bone every once in a while?? There are enough unanswered questions - can't they answer at least ONE?

Ok, so the weird Desmond episode last night seems to point toward some kind of time warp. It's Desmond's "fate" to end up on the island pushing that button, so even though he went back in time (or dreamed he went back in time) and wanted to change things, he couldn't. Why not? Somebody else pointed out the similarity to Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. At least Bill Murray learned from reliving that day and WAS able to change things.

And next week's episode - looks like we're back with Jack and the Others again and get to see what happened to Cindy. Yawn. When are we going to find out more about the folks on the beach?? I thought for sure last night Kate and Sawyer would get back and we'd get more info on the Losties, but no such luck.

I'm frustrated, disgruntled, questioning why I'm staying up late to watch this show. I feel like the producers are just stringing us along and once we DO find out all the answers, it'll be a big let down.
