After they shot him Eko threw him on the plane then tried to get on himself. One of Eko's drug runner friends pushed Eko out and closed the door as the plane took off. One of the soldiers ran up to Eko and said "FAther are you OK?" That's how Eko "got out of it".

To me they looked like flashbacks of Eko's life. There was an image of him as a child, one of an African woman, and two boys, one of whom was yelling.

Yes, Eko's brother was shot, but Eko and the other drug dealer put him on the plane and then the other drug dealer kicked Eko off the plane, so he could have the drug money for himself, leaving Eko behind. It looks like Eko turned his life around and became a priest, I guess that is why he said that guy saved his life.

Regarding the monster/smoke, both Locke and Eko stood still and the smoke did not harm them, it seems it only goes after people who run, although the pilot wasn't running so my theory might be off Also, I remember Locke saying the monster was "magic", which would make sense after seeing it tonight. I'm just curious why Eko wasn't afraid of it, as Locke was not afraid either. They both seem to have this weird essence or something going on

I totally agree! This was probably the most interesting and compelling story so far. Eko is by far the best and most interesting character on the show right now. I can't wait to watch it again!

I'm glad you posted because I couldn't tell. I thought it was taking pictures of him. I just saw what looked like flashes.

It certainly was in my book.

Well, I didn't have any expectations after the long wait, and so I wasn't setting myself up for disappointment. It also didn't hurt that it was a flashback for my one of my new favorite characters. I hadn't read anything about the episode or seen any previews, so it came as a very pleasant surprise. So now, yes, I will say it was much better than I expected.

Next week's episode we can finally make out the whispers, I think they say "this is our island" in the previews. All I know is when I hear that whispering, it totally freaks me out

One thing I noticed is that right before the "monster" showed up there were bird calls. When we saw it last season for the first time there was a bird then too.

Neither Locke nor Eko were afraid of it. They stood still and faced it. Bear with me here, but it is almost as if the smoke maybe represents the bad in their past, hence the images of Ekos' past in the "smoke", and they have made peace with it or something, so it no longer scares them....???

Probably way off, but just a thought.

It was really good tonight, and it left me wantin' more...

Remember though, the first time Locke saw the "monster" nothing happened, the second time, it tried to take off with him. I wonder if it has to do with where they are at the time, if they represent a perceived threat. Maybe the pilot was in a place he didn't belong and that is why he was killed and the first time Locke saw it he wasn't a threat but the second time he was.

Also Danielle said that the "monster" was the Island "Security System" which could explain what I said in the above post.

Locke and Ecko both appear to be men of faith. Could that have something to do with the smoke leaving them alone? If you're faith is strong, you are able to resist it or something? I don't have any reasoning for the time it grabbed Locke, although even then Locke wasn't afraid. He told Jack to let him go.

We watched the recap episode to try to get back into it after the long break. You know, some of the scenes I was watching for the 3rd or 4th time and STILL got chills even though I knew what would happen. Amazing!

LOVED the new episode! I thought it was great and I really like Ecko! I feel so bad for Charlie...when I saw his little stash and the look on his face at the end...creepy! I also felt bad for Micheal...I want to believe so bad that it really is Walt, but I know better. Next week's looks great. Can't wait!!

A lady (we assume his mother), the man he shot, him holding someone in his arms (brother after getting shot maybe?), Jesus on the cross, an Angel, the church, his brother who was upside down and one of his friends. We are pretty sure that was all.
