Lost Check What Should I Do?

I made out 2 checks today for the kiddos to get school pics. My DD10's check was put in her pic envelope but when I arrived at the school the check was not in the envelope. It was lost somewhere between kitchen counter and the car or. She is very upset because she said she didn't know it was in there. I am upset because I hate the though of a check with all my info floating somewhere. What should I do. I don't want to cancel it since the fee is more than the check but I am very worried that someone will find it and use my acct numbers. What should I do?

You should look for the check. Stopping payment on it won't prevent anyone who finds it from accessing your personal information (name, address, account number, the fact that you have enough money in that checking account to cover a check less than what your bank charges to stop payment on a check - so, likely, less than $25 or $35?). Most likely, it's in your house or your car, or possibly both checks somehow ended up in one envelope.

On the other hand, the likelihood of anyone finding a stray check being unethical enough to, what, steal your identity and all your money is extremely slim.

Thanks. It was dark out when DD admitted what hapened. I am lucky in the fact that my credit union will not give anyone money (even me) out of my account without my password and sometimes password and ID so that doesn't worry me. At least out SSN or Driver's Lic number is not on the check so they can get my acct number but unless they plan to pay their online bills with it I guess it's pretty useless. BTW if they were going to use it to pay online bills with it I guess we could find out who did it pretty quick. I will try to look outside when it it daytime. I just always have to worry.
