Lost an old friend today, my 20 yo cat

I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet little Tigger. These animals are so much a part of our lives.

I felt a connection to you in your post. My cat will be 20 in July, if he makes it. I told my teenage daughter that this February marks our 20th year in this house and that our kitty arrived shortly after. Since he was born before my daughter was, he too, would lay on my tummy when I was pg with her.

My cat, too, is very thin, fragile looking, though he eats constantly. He is taking meds for Hyperthyroidism, but he hasn't gained any weight like I hoped he would. He no longer makes the trip up the stairs to the computer room due to his Arthritis, but he still jumps onto the couch and lays in our laps.

Recently, when I called for an appointment at our new vets, the girl asked, "And what year was the cat born?" and I answered, "1986," and she said, "Omg!" She sounded so young, I wondered if he was older than she was!

I know my time with my cool cat is coming to an end, but I just wanted you to know I feel your pain. :(

Maybe when my cat's time comes, Tigger will be waiting at the gates with a welcoming paw. :grouphug:

Bless your sweet little kitty. :)

I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is, all too well.

Lezah, I'm so sorry about your cat. We had to do the same for our 18 year old cat last fall. I will tell you that we are now learning how to fall in love all over again with a new kitten, who is a joy and a delight. I hope your circumstances are such that you too can someday love another pet.

I'm so sorry for your loss!

Last June I had to say good-bye to my 20-year old baby, Simon. He was my sweetest companion since I picked him out from a litter of fuzzy little kittens and he first looked into my face and winked at me! He made the move to California from Wisconsin with me when I got married, and had seen 5 other cats and 4 dogs come into his life. He outlived all 4 dogs and one of the cats, and stayed sweet and friendly through it all.

Our pets are family members, and it's always hard to say goodbye. I've created a special photo album of pictures of Simon and put his collar & tags on the cover with my favorite picture of him. I'm also trying to collect stories from friends and family of their memories of Simon to add to the album. It's been nice to have that - but it took me a while before I could read the stories and look at the pictures without crying. I still miss him, and sometimes I'll think I saw Simon out of the corner of my eye, or I think I hear his meow.

Be gentle with yourself for a while, and know that we are all thinking of you!

I am so sorry, I know exactly how you feel. I've had 2 go at home, one was in my arms and the last was at the vet. I felt like the biggest traitor but I knew I was not being selfish and was doing what was best for my beloved pet, just as you did for Tigger.

I'm going to hate when I get to that point with my 13 yr old cat. :(

I am so sorry for the loss of your faithful friend. May knowing that you did the right thing comfort you and ease the pain.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

I have a 20 year old cat now and my previous cat was 19 so I know what you're going through. My heart breaks for you.

{{hugs}} I'm sorry for the loss of your furbaby! She had a long and wonderful life with your family and will always be part of it.

Awww, I'm so sorry. :grouphug:

20 years! That's a good long life in cat years. My Ethel lived to be 20 as well. She was my comfort blanket (like the blanket Linus carried around in the Peanuts cartoons.) She saw me through some horrible and good times in my life. I had a hard time letting her go. I can relate to the bond you have with your little baby.

May the happy memories of your little kitty bring you some peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Your Pets In Heaven
by Ken D. Conover

To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all.

For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you.

For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly.

For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever.
You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique.

Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.
