Looks like Universal win this round

Disney hasn't fully owned the Star Wars franchise for 20 years...

Star tours opened in 1992 that is 22 years ago and they did what with it? 1 simulator ride and a bland plain old gift shop. They didn't even theme the store.

They have had rights to Star wars for over 20 yrs and have done very very little with it.

And the die hard Star Wars fans are crying in their beer (and they are are old enough to have the beer) that Disney is doing anything with the movie.
They are not happy at all.

Star Wars has a universe to explore and has both history and future stories/movies/shorts/cartoons/video games about it. Harry Potter is what 7 movies in? 7 books in? and an 8th movie coming out about the creatures and what not?.

Yes, Harry Potter is 7 books in and 8 films in... which have become the highest grossing film franchise of all time and the highest selling book series of all time. Who knows what J.K. Rowling has up her sleeve? The Wizarding World does not begin and end with Harry.. there is plenty more to explore of their world and fans are begging for more. I think the new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is (hopefully) only the beginning.

I do think the way both parks price their tickets, it makes the numbers look rough to do both as opposed to one or the other. But if your family wants to do both, as we probably will from now on, then people will.

Yeah, that's really the best of both worlds, for sure. As you say, it's getting harder to have time and money for both, like we always used to do. (For us, this year, we were squeezing parks around the Disney Cruise besides so we only had weekends.)

Incidentally, SeaWorld had buy one get half so they earned our business along with our 2 base WDW and 1 DTD/DQ day. (I also should mention that we liked Disney cruising enough to warrant getting the Disney Rewards cards where our points count towards anything Disney, so naturally it would bring down the WDW tix versus tacking on USO. I did try to make it work though, and it just wasn't as good a deal...)

For 2015, in Hollywood, I REALLY want to do both. But I want to do it out there where WDW won't wear me out so much (2 parks instead of 4 for Disney, and where HP doesn't dominate Universal.)

It may be our new favorite trip! I just wish fall 2015 wasn't so far away, so I could start planning it. :rotfl:

They have had *some* rights to SW since Star Tours opened. AFAIK, we don't know what those rights were exactly...they didn't own them outright and could just do whatever they wanted with it as they can now. That was my point.

Not all SW fans are crying about Disney doing another movie. I think it's ridiculous to think that Disney is going to somehow tank it, given what they've done with Marvel. Lucas did more damage himself with the prequels, and that is something most SW fans I know do agree on.

WRT the bold - don't underestimate DLR...DLR has just about the same number of attractions as WDW, just in less space. A few days at DLR definitely has the same effect on me as a few days at WDW. :)

Yup! Nuthin can be as bad as the prequels. Nuthin. :sad2: I'll definitely be giving the new movies a shot. And I'm a super dooper sci fi bean, always have been. Disney could definitely do no worse than the CGI jabba the hut... and not very good CGI either...

That's why I'm so excited! Because it has all the rides and only takes a few minutes to park hop and they are basically all in one place! Sheesh. I wish 2015 was here...

I've been spending a lot of time on the DLR boards (but they aren't as busy as this one) and it seems like its going to be perfect for us, plus my other half lives on the west coast anyway (and we would have to fly pretty much anyway) and because I'm a little sad about the tiers of FP+ (which DLR doesn't have.)

Definitely not underestimating DLR, I just think that we can do 3-4 days there and tack on Universal Hollywood easier than it is to do 4 parks of WDW plus 2 parks of USO, that's all. :yay:

:lovestruc I can't even plan for airfare or hotels because it's too far away! :(

It probably will be a little easier, it's just that the fact that park hopping is so easily walkable can make for just as much walking as at WDW, even though the parks are smaller. Add in the proximity of DTD as well, and potentially walking to your hotel at the end of the night (don't know if you're staying at a Disney hotel or offsite?) and the walking adds up quickly! I just wanted to caution because while the closeness and walking-ability of DLR is a huge plus, it can also be just as tiring as WDW :)

I personally love DLR...it is my "home" park, for sure...I would love to take m daughter there, but WDW is easier to get to for us.

I don't know what your hangup on that is but it's clear where you stand on US/IOA from previous posts. People here were having a pretty civil discussion and no one has stated what you keep pointing out.

If either US/IOA ever post a higher attendance number than AK or DHS then it will be front page news on every WDW forum. There will be plenty of time to discuss that if it happens. The fact that it's even foreseeable now speaks for itself.

...and I was trying to participate in the "pretty civil discussion". I wasn't being sarcastic. I believe that US/IOA gets more guests than AK and DHS. If you've read my previous posts then you would see that I have lamented the lack of attention and investment in the three non-MK parks. I desperately want them to add more attractions to the three non-MK parks. I'm thrilled about Avatar but wish it was going to be completed sooner.

I am, indeed, an unabashed WDW fan and couldn't care less about Universal. Well...I *do* care about their aggressive expansion and exploding attendance as I hope it pushes Disney to new heights in response.

I think Universal just won based on food options in the new Diagon Alley's creativity and uniqueness. I love Disney but they seriously need to take some real risks. They keep playing it way too safe. Even Magicbands and fastpass + were safe.

Sigh...I feel oddly disagreeable today! :rotfl2: But this was not the case AT ALL for us! We eat GF and we ate like QUEENS this year. Brown Derby is THE BEST meal I have EVER had. I can hardly describe what they gave me, except that it was some kind of fried yucca with duck comfit in the middle, sorry I knew I couldn't do it, but it was out of this world, and all GF! And EPCOT had awesome fresh grilled tilapia with slaw, or beets and goat cheese salad, or eggplant and spaghetti squash and GF beer right off there Urban Farmhouse stand at the entrance to Showcase.

When is the last time you got a beet salad at an amusement park? I mean, beets may not be everyone's thing (shame on you! :) but it IS sorta unique to get fresh organic greens with a goat cheese dressing covered with fresh beets, or the other options above presented. This wasn't at a Country, it was just at a stand in EP (proclaimed to be grown there at the Land)... Eating at MK, that gets a thumbs down so far (haven't gotten to Be Our Guest yet) but HS gets applause for some of the best GF organic Pizza made available at Pizza Planet, and that was just pizza... I agree not very creative, but when you eat GF, it's nice to know they have pizza...

I can't believe how well we ate this year! And this doesn't even take in to consideration the world show case or food festivals...

I am going to PLOW through that Ploughmans Platter (even the beet and apple salad)!!!:thumbsup2 I saw a ton of the food pics over on Orlando United about a month ago and was really impressed.

Butterbeer ice cream.....game, set, match!!!:scared1:

So let me make a quick prediction here. When The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley opens later this summer, the longest lines in the places won't be for "Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts," the Hogwarts Express or for even the Leaky Cauldron. No, the place where people will be standing in lines that will probably reach all the way over to another Central Florida destination resort where a certain Mouse-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named hangs out will be Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. Just so these Universal Orlando visitors can then get their hands on Butterbeer-flavored ice cream.

Not to mention that Avatar is Pocahontas in Space! What's NOT to love?!?!:3dglasses

Pocahontas in Space.... ahhh, yes.......

Where are Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Peter Lorre- when you need them??!! 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea needs that sequel - a true re-make of Mysterious Island....!

Oh right, guess I forgot -- dead is still dead. Sorry for that....

(on a side note: very much agree on The Brown Derby. We love it, as well)

Good info, thanks! :thumbsup2 Personally I'd love to see Marvel move to WDW and be modeled after the movie franchises, if Universal has Batman and the other DC properties available. I can almost see Uni going along with it if Disney made it worth their while to switch over and if (and only if) Warner & DC gets their act together and makes the DC properties more attractive by improving the movie presence for everybody besides Batman.

The original plan was for Marvel Superhero Island to be Gotham City and Toon Lagoon to be a heavily themed Looney Tunes area. Licensing was extremely expensive when looked at against the cost of just building the expansion. A new theme park, a set of massive parking garages, CityWalk, and two hotels with plans for a third to be added a few years later. The price tag was north of $2 Billion and it was likely to come in over budget.

Think about the theming of the original Lost Continent, Seuss Landing, and the landscaping of Jurassic Park compared to Toon Lagoon and Marvel Super Hero Island. Those last two were late fill ins for what Universal really wanted to do. They also cut corners on theming, though they did invest a lot on the ride systems in each area. Spiderman was a huge cost for building and R&D. But the general theming of that area is simple comic stuff and flat surfaces. It's even less themed in Toon Lagoon.

There's been some talk inside Universal that they want to replace Toon Lagoon with something else. I know they would like to redo Marvel to DC in some strong way with better theming, redone rides, and maybe another E-ticket. Speculation on my part, but they may have a plan on the books with WB for DC and Looney Tunes. I know they talked expanded partnership of some kind when they negotiated and worked on Harry Potter. WB is also investing in these areas too because they promote their properties. So I could see them doing the same with DC and Looney Tunes - helping to design and helping to invest, getting a share of profits from the park in the process.

For those commenting on Disney and how they would have handled Harry Potter, I have a feeling that a key to them failing to acquire the rights was their unwillingness to work with WB on licensing for the film design coupled with an unwillingness to rush a building and not coming to the table with any concepts. Universal reached out to WB as a part of their bid and had a comprehensive plan about how to get it off the ground quickly through converting some of what they had. WB liked it and JK Rowling works well with WB and likes the producers very much. I think Disney would not have liked the idea of having to let WB have so much input on design and they couldn't have done it as quickly. Hogsmeade, a new E-ticket, and a retheme of existing rides allowed Universal to get it done on a quick turnaround, in time for the final film release.

I'm not sure if a Disney vision would have included the cast of the films. Universal's proposal included the quick turnaround bit and a pledge to build a whole new area within five years of completion of Stage 1. The success of the first allowed them to expand the license to Universal Hollywood and Japan.

WB has the upcoming new trilogy based inside the Potterverse that JK Rowling is scripting, so more additions may be coming in the future.

As for other things that Universal might do, I know what they've thought of in the past. When they still had the Lockheed land by the convention center they were in talks to build a third gate as a joint operation with Cedar Fair, the owners of Cedar Point and other amusement parks. More hotels were in the offing with space for a fourth park and an express shuttle between the two properties. The third park was going to be a traditional amusement park on steroids, with enhanced ride design from Universal and amusement park know how from Cedar Fair. They wanted to launch with 7-8 coasters, flume rides, a train, a new take on bumper cars, and many other things. Alas, it was not to be.

Pocahontas in Space.... ahhh, yes.....

(on a side note: very much agree on The Brown Derby. We love it, as well)

Originally we splurged to kill two birds with one stone so to speak. But the meal was well well worth $57 and the Fantasmic VIP vouchers almost seemed like a joke after the fact. Like you kidding me? We get fast passes for Fantasmic besides? Unbelievable. One of my favorite memories this year hands down. For years I have passed under that canopy to run to the rides, wondering what kind of elite people get to eat there...and this year it was finally us! (I guess that's what happens when you grow up.. Hotdogs just don't cut it anymore...plus our Disney rewards paid $105 towards the tab! :yay:) We had stellar service too, Keith. shout out! What a day!

I do think the store is more themed than my local target. There's not a giant AT-AT anywhere near my local Target, anyway. :confused3. Nor does my local target look like this:

Do you have proof they had the rights to do this without getting Lucas to sign off on it?

The store is somewhat themed, at least as you enter it. You see the back of the set, so the idea is that you were on a soundstage experiencing the filming of a Star Wars film. You exit to a place where they sell Star Wars stuff. The store has a backstage feel to it by design. It was built when they were still taking the studios part of the park seriously.

I think when Star Tours opened, most of what we consider the Studios today was closed unless you took the old Backlot Tour. I think on opening day that Disney-MGM had The Great Movie Ride, The Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, whatever was in the American Idol building (can't remember), the Animation Tour, and the two hour BackStage Tour. When Star Tours opened, you could walk the New York backlot area, but other sections didn't open until Muppetvision opened in 1991.

That was an interesting time at the park. I remember going and seeing some of the motorcades they'd do as a star would arrive, do their hand prints, and sign their names in the cement. Saw a couple of those in 1991-92.

Things began to dramatically change with the Sunset Boulevard expansion. They originally had a theater located right around where that expansion now is. I think it used to be a Hollywood style revue, but was the first location for Beauty and the Beast in 1991 or 1992. That got moved to the new theater after the expansion that opened the door for Tower of Terror and Fantasmic a few years later.

It's interesting the think about the development of both the studios. I was at Universal and Disney-MGM not long after they opened and many times after. I remember the old Hard Rock, the Psycho house, and the lack of attractions at USF when it opened too (Jaws was supposed to open, but it had a lot of problems resolved through a lawsuit and a complete rebuild).

unless with the latest update they changed it but inside was just plain old shelves and displays. No feel of being in a shop that would have been in Star Wars.
