Okay DVC is a point based system - you buy a number of these points either through Disney or the resale market - I personally have gone through Disney 1 time and The timeshare store 2 times, And with these points you book accomadations - you are not actually buying a 1bdrm unit that is yours. Once purchased these points are renewed annually until 2042 and can be banked or borrowed from one use year into another(you can never have more than 3 yrs of points at one time) If you bank this years points into next year they(the banked points) must be used before next years use year ends - and you can only borrow one year in advance.
Use year: is the Month your points renew - If your use year is june - each june 1st your points renew and if not used or banked by certain banking deadlines unused point will expire the last day in May.
Go to this link - It will explain everything much better then I can - after you read through the info post all your questions here there are extremely knowledgably folks here - I am not one of them.
In addition to yasuern's very good advice above, you can also get a sense for the "cost" of rooms at different resorts by looking at the various DVCpoints charts... there is a link above or you can click this:
Also, look at the point chart that Mrs. Snowgod referenced you will be able to determine how many points your normal vacation (length of days and time of year) will cost you to stay in a one bedroom. After you determine how many points you need, DVC is currently selling points for $84 per point with some specials. I think you can sell back your first years points to DVC for $10 a points and essentially pay $74 per point. (which means you would not have 2003 points, but would get your annual allotment of points in 2004)
