Looking for St. Louis recommendations

We might be headed through St. Louis on a family roadtrip this summer.

I'm the only one that's been to the city and it's been years. It would be me DH, DS14 and DD13. We'd be there possibly 2 days.

I'm looking for recommendations (besides the Arch) on what's not to miss in St. Louis.

I'd also like restaurant recommendations that you think are not to be missed. We aren't looking for fine dining, but places that would be dress casual at most. Reasonable prices are appreciated, but I'm okay with something totally fabulous that's worth an above average price.

CITY MUSEUM is a MUST DO!!! Our kids LOVE that place.

Grant's Farm, the Gateway Arch Museum, the zoo are all nice too. Don't bother with the Magic House with your kids-it is a Children's Museum, geared toward younger kids--fun but your kids are probably too old.

I can't help much with places to eat. We are generally in St. Louis proper only for a band competition and we just walk toward the river and eat at the first place we can find that doesn't have a huge line . There are some great places down by the river/arch, many with outdoor seating if the weather is nice.

We love going to Union Station. It has some shopping and you can eat at the Hard Rock Cafe. The Fudgery is also there, which is so much fun to see- they make fudge while singing and having audience participation, then you get to sample some of the fudge they made in front of you. You can also buy other fudge as well. It's so good!

I 2nd the City Museum. After many trip to StL, we finally went there last fall and it was AWESOME. I can't explain to you in words how cool it was, but it was a lot of fun and we will be going back.

Arch, zoo, botanical gardens... We enjoyed the science center too... http://www.slsc.org/

LOVED the Drury Inn and Suites we stayed at--there are several, but we stayed at a very new one in 2008 near the zoo.

We had a lot of fun at Fitz's...they make their own sodas and my kids all LOVE root beer... http://www.fitzsrootbeer.com/

Forest Park is my favorite place. Head down to the Boathouse and rent a paddleboat.

Zoo and Science Center are free. You can do off street parking for free.

We park on the Planetarium side to get free parking to the Science Center. There is a bridge over the highway to get to the Science Center.

Eating? Head down to the Delmar Loop which is right next to Forest Park. Go and eat at Pi which is the Obama's favorite pizza. I have eaten there and it is good. There is also a place called Fitz's which is a great burger place that it very good and they make rootbeer there.

Both of these restaurants are close to the zoo/Forest Park so you do not have to suffer the price gouging of the zoo park food. Boathouse does serve food however I find it only OK.

"The Hill" has Italian restaurants.

However you must go to the Italian bakeries on The Hill and get the cookies and pastries. Yum.

My brother's Italian GF prefers Vitale's bakery (still have not gone there yet, I am sure it is terrific). I have only been to Missouri Bakery. They take cash or checks, no cards.

I like Union Station myself... but it has been really slow there as of late. Hard Rock is right there.. also several other restaurtants inside and outside.
There is a small train museum in the upper level.

I am also a big fan of the Delmar Loop .. and it has lots of unique shopping. Blueberry Hill is a cool place to eat, Chuck Berry plays there often as well as other bands. The food is ok.. they tout their burgers. You can eat outside on the street with the ''St. Louis Stars" beneath your feet and watch the unique local folks. It is close to the universities. It is the St. Louis version of Hollywoods walk of fame.

Six Flags is 30 minutes south of the city..

Take a Budweiser tour... it is fun, and interesting... I have not been since it was acquired by the Dutch tho. http://www.budweisertours.com/ Free beer and soda at the end of the tour. Go see the Clydesdales!

In the summer there are riverfront festivals going on thru out the season.. check it out!
