When I was young, at Christmas, my parents used to make icebox cookies and I LOVED them. I'm still looking for the recipe. They don't have it anymore, and it must have either come from an old cookbook or a relative. I've done lots of searches on the internet, can't find one, so I was hoping someone here may have a recipe. Heres what I remember...there was no brown sugar in it, I *think* there was something like cream of tartar in it. Simple recipe, roll dough in wax paper, freeze overnight, slice and bake. They turned out really crunchy too, not soft and chewy. Anyone know of a recipe like this? Thanks!

Here is my mothers recipe, although I don't know if it is the exact one you are looking for, but she made them all the time and I know the recipe is very old............
2 cups brown sugar
1 scant cup of shortning The recipe says scant and I am hoping it means of a cup!
2 sggs
1 tea. baking soda
1 tea. vanilla
3 1/2 cups of flour
1 cup of nuts
Chill in bars ( like you described wrapped in wax paper)
Slice and bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes
My mother would have been 82 and I know her mother made these also.........
Hope I was able to help
I need a road map to find the kitchen, but I do have all of her recipes!

Here is another recipe that I found in one of her books although this one too has brown sugar in it, the book is ancient!
1 lb of butter
1 tbl. cinnamon
2 teas. baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs well beaten
5 cups of flour
almonds
Stir butter and sugar well, add eggs, 1/4 lb of almonds, sliced fine, add the flour soda and cinnamon.
Roll 2 inches thick, wrapped in wax paper and refridgerate til firm, cut in thin slices and bake at 350 until crisp.
I remember my mother kinda made them look like a bar and the cookies were rectangled shape. The first recipe was hers this is from one of her books, I am sure she used the first since it was in her box.

Here is a recipe from the site mentioned above which maybe exactly what you are looking for............
PECAN REFRIGERATOR COOKIES

1 c. butter
2 c. white or brown sugar (I use white)
3 1/2 c. flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. pecans

Cream butter and sugar, add dry ingredients, then mix well. Stir in pecans. Mix all together well. Roll in 4 rolls wrap on wax paper, put in refrigerator for at least 4 hours, overnight is best. Slice into 1/4 inch slices and bake on ungreased baking sheet for 8 minute at 375 degrees. Remove from cookie sheet immediately. Makes about 12 dozen cookies.

Thanks for all the responses (they all sound good!)....sorry, need to clarify, there were no nuts, or oats in them. They were just a buttery sugar cookie...sortof like a spritz cookie, but with a little more distinct taste.
