"Looking For Cheap/Free Ideas for Friend" thread?

Someone asked about this on another thread that was closed.

I understand the original thread was closed due to a post or two violating board policies.

There were so many good ideas on low-cost/free things to do at WDW.

Unfortunately, I didn't get around to copying them down before the thread was closed.

Any chance we could re-create the ideas?

The best free thing at WDW for us has been simple resort hopping. The All Stars and Pop are fun to go to and just see the different giant icons. A person could easily spend a couple of hours at each resort.

Cups of ice are free in Magic Kingdom. If you bring a couple of can drinks or bottles of H2O in your backpack you can stretch your dollar alittle farther!

Don't pay for food you won't eat. If you only want a burger, order only a burger. All they list on the menu is combo's but you can order anything by itself. Without fries you can save a couple bucks. I once ordered the ribs at Flame Tree without any sides. Got exactly what I wanted and saved money.

Okay, I have another: Most counter service meals are large. I usually share with one of my kids and have plenty of food! Plus there are lots of snacks I like to leave room for!!!

Here are some things I do or have heard that others do:

1) Bring my own bagels and juice for breakfast. I purchase the little boxes of Juicy Juice and double bag them in baggies. I pack them in my suitcase and they are waiting for me when my bags get to Orlando. I can munch and get ready at the same time -- giving me that extra energy to get to the bus faster!

2) Pack packages of Crystal Light or some kind of sweetened Kool-aid that you can put in cups or bottles of water.

3) Some restaurants take AAA that gives you a discount, if you are a member.

4) Some folks bring some of their own favorite snacks inside the parks. I actually brought some extra Juicy Juices with me and they were life savers! I just wanted "a little something" and they were perfect to tie me over!

For anyone who has smaller kids, if I remember correctly, Innoventions East in Epcot had a pavillion inside where you can build a small plastic robot for keepsies that's for free. Not much to him, but he was kinda cute, and DS(4) still plays with him. We ended up with 3 of the little guys. Me, DH, DS. I think it was called Plastic Works. They tell you you have to go through the whole demo which will take about 45 minutes, I think. They also ask you if you want to do some kind of race. Some kind of virtual reality or something or other, can't really remember. Looked kinda neat. Anyways, we bypassed everything and just went straight for the robots. Kinda like a build-a-robot kinda thingie. I thought it made a really neat free souvenir.

pennies! my kids love to do the penny press machines, the cost is 51 cents for each one (50 cent charge plus your penny) and the machine presses pictures onto the pennies as they go through. DS is 6 and had an empty plastic baseball card pouch (plastic sheet with little pockets in it) and we put one penny in each pocket and stapled each one shut. So now he can look at each one without taking them out. Granted it is kind of expensive if you think about the fact that most of the penny machines are hand cranked so they don't even have electric bills for the machines! But what other souvenir can you buy for 51 cents?

actually the build the robot think was great fun, not skipping the rest. It would depend on how old your kids are, but the cms kept saying "it's free" You start out with a little lecture type thing about plastics, but they sort them and do some other things that most of the kids in our group really seemed to enjoy. There were computer game type things that they could play while they waited. Then you went to the next part where you could build your own computer robot. Not only did you choose head, body, and legs, but color too. And you could make it heavier or lighter or faster or more powerful, geez I can't remember it all. You do a test race and then you can make changes.Then you race. To race your robot you run on this pad on the floor, straight ahead, turn and even jump. They announce winners and also have a coolest robot contest that everyone votes on. It was alot of fun!
there were kids I would guess as young as 3-4 having a great time with adult help. They especially seemed to enjoy the running part. Me not so much, I slowed down the whole running thing the second time we went on a trip. After the race, you can then go and build your plastic robot. The whole thing can take from 30-45 minutes.
