Hi all,

I'm looking for a song (preferably one with a music video) that can be shown to a bunch of teens at youth group for a talk a about materialism. We are looking for a mainstream song that the kids would probably already be familiar with. Anything should be fine as long as it doesn't have content that is TOO bad. Any ideas?

Madonna...>Material Girl! ;)

Material Girl

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're O.K.
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away

They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, 'cause we are

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day, 'cause they are

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in a material world

Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me, 'cause everybody's

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in a material world

I am a girl

IT'S MONEY THAT MATTERS
Songwriter(s): Randy Newman
Date Published: 1988
Artist/CD: Randy Newman/"Land of Dreams"
Song Type: Ironic Pop
Lyrics Excerpt:
"But I got a great big house on the hill here
And a great big blonde wife inside it
And a great big pool in my backyard and another great big pool
beside it
Sonny it's money that matters, hear what I say
It's money that matters in the USA
It's money that matters
Now you know that it's true
It's money that matters whatever you do"

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In a rich man´s world

(old Abba song)

I actually think Alicia Key song "If I Ain't Got You" is a wonderful choice! Here are the lyrics:

Title: Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You lyrics

Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for the fame
Some people live for the power yeah
Some people live just to play the game
Some people think that the physical things
Define what's within
I've been there before
But that life's a bore
So full of the superficial

Some people want it all
But I don't want nothing at all
If it ain't you baby
If I ain't got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain't got you

Some people search for a fountain
Promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that's the only way to prove you love them

And in a world on a silver platter
And wondering what it means
No one to share, no one who truly cares for me

Some people want it all
But I don't want nothing at all
If it ain't you baby
If I ain't got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain't got you

Some people want it all
But I don't want nothing at all
If it ain't you baby
If I ain't got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain't got you

If I ain't got you with me baby
Nothing in this whole wide world don't mean a thing
If I ain't got you with me baby

Are you specifically looking for mainstream? Or can you also use Contemporary Christian videos? If the latter, there are two web sites that only play Christian videos that you may want to check out. I don't if it's possible to "record" directly from the website onto your computer though. However, If you have the Sky Angel network (www.skyangel.com) on your TV, then you can easily do it. DH has recorded Spirit for a few hours to show our Youth Group. The kids love it!

http://tvulive.com which is a bit on the heavy side
www.spirit-television.com which is more contemporary

There was a great contemporay Christian song out a few years called Two Sets of Jones by Big Tent Revival.

Money from the musical Cabaret

EMCEE]
Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the world go around
It makes the world go 'round.

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around,
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go 'round.

[GIRLS]
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money

[EMCEE]
If you happen
To be rich,
[GIRLS]
.......Ooooh
[EMCEE]
And you feel like a
Night's enetertainment,
[GIRLS]
...Money
[EMCEE]
You can pay for a
Gay escapade.
[GIRLS]
Money money
Money money
Money money
Money money
[EMCEE]
If you happen to
To be rich,
[GIRLS]
.......Ooooh
[EMCEE]
And alone, and you
Need a companion
[GIRLS]
...Money
[EMCEE]
You can ring-ting-
A-ling for the maid.
[EMCEE]
If you happen
To be rich
[GIRLS]
.....Ooooh
[EMCEE]
And you find you are
Left by your lover,
[GIRLS]
...Money
[EMCEE]
Though you moan
And you groan
Quite a lot,
[GIRLS]
Money money
Money money
Money money
Money money
[EMCEE]
You can take it
On the chin,
[GIRLS]
.....Ooooh
[EMCEE]
Call a cab,
And begin
[GIRLS]
...Money
[EMCEE]
To recover
On your fourteen-
Carat yacht.

[EMCEE]
Money makes the world go around,
The world go around,
The world go around,
Money makes the world go around,
Of that we can be sure.
(....) on being poor.

[ALL]
Money money money-
money money money
Money money money-
money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

[DANCE BREAK]

[EMCEE AND GIRLS (In Canon)]
If you haven't any coal in the stove
And you freeze in the winter
And you curse on the wind
At your fate
When you haven't any shoes
On your feet
And your coat's thin as paper
And you look thirty pounds
Underweight.
When you go to get a word of advice
From the fat little pastor
He will tell you to love evermore.
But when hunger comes a rap,
Rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat at the window...

[GIRLS]
At the window...

[EMCEE (spoken)]
Who's there?

[GIRLS (spoken)]
Hunger!

[EMCEE (Spoken)]
Ooh, hunger!

See how love flies out the door...
For

[EMCEE]
Money makes
The world...
[GIRLS]
...Go around
[EMCEE]
The world...
[GIRLS]
...Go around
[EMCEE]
The world...
[GIRLS]
...Go around
[EMCEE]
Money makes the
.... Go around
[GIRLS]
...Go around

That clinking
Clanking sound of
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

[EMCEE]
Get a little,
[GIRLS]
Money money
[EMCEE]
Get a little,
[GIRLS]
Money money
[EMCEE]
Money money
[GIRLS]
Money money
[EMCEE]
Money money
[GIRLS]
Money money

[EMCEE]
Mark, a yen, a buck
[GIRLS]
Get a little
[EMCEE]
Or a pound
[GIRLS]
Get a little
[EMCEE]
That clinking clanking
[GIRLS]
Get a little
Get a little

[EMCEE]
Clinking sound

[GIRLS]
Money money
Money money...

[EMCEE]
Is all that makes
The world go 'round

[GIRLS]
Money money
Money money

It makes the world go round!

How about Favourite Things by Big Brovaz? Maybe a little too expressive, though.

The tune is the same as the Favorite Things song that's in The Sound of Music.

Lyrics:

[Intro]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

[Chorus]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

What I need is a gentleman
Who does the best he can
There to hold my hand
I want him to understand
Of course I want diamonds and expensive things
Cos a girl gotta have her favourite things

Oh that's what you like
Nice type of life
Platinum and ice
Not diamon ite
Well that's alright
You looking right
*** kinda tight
Come spend the night
Role with the G
Oh we can B
Right you and me
Like fantasy
I'll make it real
So what the deal
Girl tell Randy just how you feel

[Chorus]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

I would like a man who
Takes care of business
And still have the time to take me on a shopping spree
What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine
With what we have let's put it together and we can shine

I know what you want and
I got what you need
I believe you should be rolling with me
I take your around out on the town
And show you the way that a baller gets down
Whenever you're ready girl, we can go now
And we can do things you don't even know how
I know that you know that I'm feeling your style
So tell me what to do just to make you go wild

[Chorus]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

Let me tell you about D, its all about
Simplicity, easy to please
But I like expensive things
For me you can buy diamonds and pearls
Just some of the little things
I like in my world

So you like wining and dining and shining
Gliding and riding
Pushing them hot whips
Mummy come get with a real pimp
Its flossing Flawless honest
I'll make you a shopoholic
Buying you stuff until you vomit
Blowing chronic, hopping on it
Even if you didn't want it

[Chorus]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

[Chorus]
Buy me diamonds and rubies
I'm crazy bout Bentley's
Gucci dresses and drop top kompressors
Wine me and dine me
Bring those platinum rings
Those are a few of our favourite things

A previous poster mentioned "Fabulous" from High School Musical 2, and that was the first song I thought of when I read the post title.

Sharpay:
Its out with the old and in with the new,
Goodbye clouds of Gray, hello skies of blue
A dip in the pool, a trip to the spa
Endless days in my chaise
The whole world according to moi
Excuse Me Thank You
Iced tea imported from England,
Lifeguards imported from Spain,
Towels imported from Turkey,
Turkey imported from Maine,

Sharpay and Ryan:
We're gonna relax and renew,

Sharpay:
You, go, do!

I want fabulous,
That is my simple request,
All things fabulous,
Bigger and better and best,
I need something inspiring to help me get along,
I need a little fabulous is that so wrong?

Fetch me my Jimmy Choo flip flops,
Where is my pink Prada tote?
I need my Tiffany hair band,
And then I can go for a float.

Ryan and Sharpettes:
A summer like never before

Sharpay:
I want more!

Ryan and Sharpettes:
She wants fabulous,
That is her simple request,
All things fabulous,
Bigger and better and best,
She needs something inspiring to help her get along,
She needs a little fabulous is that so wrong?

Fabulous pool, fabulous splash,
Fabulous parties even fabulous trash,
Fabulous fashion, fabulous bling,
She's got to have fabulous everything.

Ryan and Sharpay:
Nothing to Discuss
Everything's got to be perfect.

Sharpay:
For me

Ryan:
She wants fabulous,
That is her simple request,
All things fabulous,
Bigger and better and best,
She needs something inspiring to help her get along,
She needs a little fabulous is that so wrong?

Sharpay:
This won't do, that's a bore,
That's insulting, I need more!
I need, I need,
I need, I need,
I need, I need

I Need FABULOUS!

Sharpettes:
Fabulous Hair, fabulous style,
Fabulous eyes and that fabulous smile.

Sharpay:
I like what I see,
I like it a lot

Sharpettes:
Is this absolutely fabulous?

Ryan:
Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous?

Sharpay:
Absolutely... NOT!
