DD has wanted a kitten of her own for a while so I thought I'd let her get one for her 7th birthday next month. She has planned out this kitten for 2 years and it hasn't changed a bit. She wants a white kitten with blue eyes. It has to be a girl and she wants to name it Sugar. Now I need to find a white kitten with blue eyes. She said she liked short hair ones but I rarely see any short haired ones. Are there are types of breeds that are short haired, white, and blue eyed?

FYI--Often white cats with blue eyes are deaf. Not always.

I think a pet should be chosen for its personality over appearance. :goodvibes

www.petfinder.org is a good place to look for kittens who need homes. :)

I agree with Laura. You know what? I bet your daughter will be so thrilled she's getting a kitten that she won't really mind if you can't find the exact one she's had in her head.

Congrats on your future kitty!

Take your daughter to the area shelter and have her spend some time visiting with the cats. The are in such need of attention and spending time there can really give a good window into the cat's personality.
A good shelter will allow you time in a room alone with a cat.

We lucked out with our two.
I took DS12 to the shelter just to spend some time with the animals, he loves animals.
He fell head over heels for Mikey, a skinny, scrawny little orange cat that everyone else was ignoring. Well, Mikey took right to DS, hopping up in his lap to cuddle.
When we left that day, DS was in tears.

We went back two weekends later and yep, Mikey hopped right back up into DS's lap.
Mikey came home with us a week later.
Turns out he is not just skinny and scrawny, he's part Siamese! Still slender but healthy.
His personality won out over looks, but we all think he is gorgeous!

Thanks for the advice. I already have 3 appointments this week with animal rescues. All of our pets have come from either rescues or shelters. I was kind of hoping to find one and surprise her with it but if I have no luck finding a white one then I plan to take her to look. I feel the same way that once she sees the kittens then having to have a white one will just go out the window!

We got a "white short haired blue eyed" kitten and you'd laugh if you saw him now! My dad named him "Al" for albino

Today he's a blue-eyed, long-haired, and looks like he rolled in dirt because he changed color on us as he grew older :rotfl:

We love him though...

It doesn't matter what they look like- I'm sure you're right and that she'll find one she falls in love with even if he isn't white :)

Goodluck on the search!! It's sometimes hard to find them in the winter!

As everyone else said, it doesn't matter what the cat looks like. I'm sure your daughter would be thrilled to just be getting a cat. I had wanted a cat for a LONG time. I was a few years younger than your daughter. We were renting a house and my dad promised me that when we moved, I could get a cat. (We weren't allowed to have pets there, but my dad was paying extra to keep my dog). When we finally moved, we went to the pet store (I didn't know what I know now about pet stores vs. rescues/shelters). I fell in love with this one tabby cat. She was the first one I saw and the first one I held. I didn't care what she looked like (of course I thought she was the most adorable kitten you would ever see). My Sassy is the sweetest thing ever. I'm sure your daughter will feel the same way about whatever cat she gets. If you close off any cats that aren't white with blue eyes, you could possibly be passing up the perfect cat for you.

We got a kitten for Christmas two years ago - the only one I could find was black and white, and an older kitten. DD was thrilled!!! This time, though, I wanted - a female, gray, young kitten. (I had decided to get a second cat because we'd had to put our older cat to sleep this fall.) I walked into a pet store and there was a cage full of kittens - their owner hadn't been able to find them homes. And there she was - about 8 weeks old and gray! I fell in love instantly and the rest is history - didn't even try to make it a surprise, just said, "Merry Christmas, girls, this is our new kitten!" They were both open-mouthed, even the 17 year old - they were so used to me saying, "No, we can't take the kitten home!" every time we found one at the pet store!!!!

She is sitting on my lap right now, and she is precious. I hope you find your white kitten, but if not, your DD will still be happy with the one she chooses!

Does your DD understand that the white haired blue eyed kitten will become a Cat? :cat: I ask this because my niece, didn't like her kitten when it was no longer a kitten and asked for a new one because the one they have out grew it's bed... :rotfl:

Oh and Yes, most white short haired blue eyed cats are deaf.. My friend had one named Merlin.. He was still an awesome cat..

and our grey haired blue eyed kitten we fell in love with now has Green eyes..

Good Luck... Maybe after going to the Shelters, she will find another cat she can name sugar.. Just show her that Brown Sugar exsists too.. :teeth:

I have a small gray and white cat (she's about 7 or 8 lbs.) named Sugar. She has green eyes. We rescued her. She's a sweet cat but very finicky.

Good luck on your search for "Sugar"!!

I know how your daughter feels, I am very drawn to white cats and up until a year ago had 3 all white cats.......1 with blue eyes that was not deaf, the percent of white cats with blues eyes being deaf is about 90% and usually if a white cat has one blue and an eye of another color they will be deaf on the blue eyed side. I also have one that is green eyed and one that is yellow eyed. Also know that most kittens will have blue eyes until a certain age, so even if you chose a white kitten with blue eyes it may change.
If she really wants a white kitten then don't be in to much of a hurry tell her you will keep looking until she finds the one she wants, the spring usually brings many kittens into the world, and perhaps you can let the shelters in your area know that you are looking for a white kitten, although she may fall in love with others she probably has it in her heart for a white one. I personally can not control myself when it comes to white cats, I would probably have 20 of them! She may also want to consider a male, IMO they are much more affectionate, or perhaps it is just that way in my house. All 3 of mine were short to medium hair, I also started giving them baths at a young age and continued about every 6 weeks since they seem to get a yellow tinge to them, but as long as you start them young it is no problem. I used to have one that would get in the shower with me and also tolerated the blow dryer, he would actually like to be blow dried when he was dry! I guess he liked the warmth........go figure he hated the vaccum cleaner! Good luck in your search, and for a white cat I love the name sugar!

Yes she knows a kitten becomes a cat. We already have one cat and she loves that one. That one is her big sister's technically so she wants one to call her own. I approached her tonight and mentioned that she may happen to like a different color kitten instead. I told her that there are so many cute kittens in other colors out there too. She came right back with: "Yes they are cute but they are never going to be as cute as my white kitten" LOL! I do know she is going to have a hard time getting anything else. She has more then 10 stuffed animal cats that are all white with blue eyes. They are all named Sugar.

I agree! I have a story that goes along with this..lol When we were looking to get our first cat for the kids I went to a rescue...found a really pretty adult black and white cat( we originally wanted a kitten ) so we took him home, he ended up being a terror!! The first day we had him home he hissed and lunged towards anyone...so we were afraid he would hurt the kids, we locked him in our bathroom, every time we walked passed the bathroom he growled and hissed...we took him back the next day. Lady told me they just had a bunch of kittens that were fixed and asked if I wanted to look at them so I said yes...immediatly I fell in love with a beautiful siamese kitten with the prettiest blue eyes so we took her home, she ended up passing away that night before we could get her to a vet, some complications with her surgery......so a few weeks later the lady tells us to come again and find a cat...so once again I start eyeing the prettiest ones...then I tell myself forget it, the right cat will pick me...well I picked up this scrawny little long haired black kitten, he kissed my nose, climed up on my shoulder and went to sleep...we brought him home and had him for 4 years before he passed away.

I have always wanted a white kitten, we did get one and we had him for 2 years and he got hit by a car so a year later we replaced him with another white kitten who we think was blind and deaf and my husband accidently ran him over in the driveway( he apparently didnt hear the car coming) he was a very strange cat.

But anyhow good luck with your decision and let a kitten choose you...not you choose a kitten for looks or because you have a set picture of what you want, you may be suprised at what picks you :teeth:

I can't believe all your bad luck with cats!!
My white cat with blue eyes died at 20 years of age last February, the one in my siggy is now 17 years old and my Mouse who is also white is 6 years old. But then I don't let them outside period! they have a screen room that they absolutely love. But in all honesty the 2 pedigreed cats I had died young......12 and 10, all my "mutts" live to be old! and all except the pedigreed ones (which were given to me) were either shelter cats or found on the streets. The important thing you said is that let them pick you but I would also let your daughter decide on the one she really wants. Personally I have never met nicer cats then those whose life you rescue, unfortuneately I would rather adopt a kitten than an adult because you just really don't know what kind of life the adult may have had. But cats are like people and dogs some have great personalities others do not! I hope your daughter finds the kitten that she wants!

I agree with the other posters. Take your daughter to the shelter and let her see all the cute kittens. She'll probably fall in love with all of them. I also think you should let the cat find you. With my cat Snow, we went to the pound (the shelter couldn't let cats be adopted because of worms) and everyone was ignoring this scrawny, tiny, dirty looking kitten. So we ask to see him and he was the sweetest little thing. He literally fit entirly in the palm of my hand. He looked funny in the huge box they gave us to take him home in. He is one of the best cats I have ever had, just below my main coon. The only kind of cat I would watch out for is calicos. I love mine dearly but they are very antisocial cats. As you can see in my signature we don't choose cats on looks, but I have to say that all of mine are such cuties!

In August I adopted 2 six week old Siamese kittens from the local shelter. They are white, blue eyed and short hair. Check around at shelters for Siamese you may get lucky. These two are crazy and we love them to death!

A siamese mix would probably be most likely to be white & blue eyed. Siamese kittens are white when they are babies but will get their point colors later.

There are also classified ads on www.petfinder.org you might check there.

How wonderful for your daughter. My last kitty ran away from home after we moved last year (and I did everything right to keep that from happening - I have had many moves with cats) and since my husband is allergic, I won't be having any more. This is the first time EVER I can remember being without a cat. (My Dad is a veterinarian - we always had loads of pets, including a sea urchin and starfish one time.)

You may have a hard time finding a small kitten, though, except through a breeder. As crazy as this sounds, run of the mill cats all tend to breed from Spring through summer, then nothing until the next Spring (hard to find a kitten in February!) Can't wait to see pics of the new addition, though (hint, hint)!

We got our kittens in September at Petsmart--there were SO many kittens available. We couldn't decide on one, so of course got 2. They are best friends, not to mention brother/sister and I would recommend getting 2.

Stop by Petsmart and look on Petfinders and see what's out there. I would have her help take part in the process and maybe she will end up with something other than the white cat/blue eyes.
