Going to a cookout and I am looking for a good "doctored up" recipe for canned baked beans. I have usually made them by adding onions and a little brown sugar.

Anybody done anything else that might be tasty?

Thanks:thumbsup2

I add onions, brown sugar AND some hot sauce ;)

No onions in ours. Just brown sugar, a slurp of ketchup and worcestershire sauce.

I am starving so this might not have been the best thread to start now:laughing:

If you aren't concerned about calories this'll have them :worship:

This is Grandmommy's recipe:

Pour a couple LARGE size cans of baked beans in a baking dish (13x2 is what I use)

sprinkle with 1/4 to 1/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion
top with around 1/2 cup ketchup or tomato paste if you prefer less sweet (I don't measure anything, sorry)
sprinkle with about 1/3 cup brown sugar
top with 1 package center cut bacon slice, cut in thirds (uncooked)

cover with foil and bake at 350 for 30 min. remove foil, bake for 15 to 30 min more, until bacon is fully cooked.

Yeah, it's got more calories than you need in an entire week, but dang....

fry some bacon and crumble it up in the beans, it is YUMMY.

i add onions(lots), brown sugar(tons), ketchup(just a little), mustard(again, just a little), kielbasa, bacon if i feel like it, pepperoni sometimes.....
i used a spicy kielbasa (or smoked sausage?) once. it was really good if you like heat!
then i bake them forever.......;)

I first drain all the liquid off of the beans into a bowl. A little garlic, couple of squirts of ketchup, mustard, a few shakes of worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, a couple of heaping teaspoons (not measuring) of molasses and good quality bbq sauce. Sometimes, I will add some browned up ground beef to the mix.

I start with a large can of BBQ beans in the bottom of a casserole.

Fry up some bacon (I use turkey bacon, about 6-8 strips). When it's crisp, stir in a handful of bread crumbs, enough that all the grease is soaked up. Then add 2 scallions, finely sliced. Pour over the beans, cover, and bake at 375 degrees until beans are hot and bubbling around edges.

Not low calorie, but the top is crispy and delish!

I drain the beans- 2 cans Bush's baked beans.

Then add
chopped onions
1/2 c brown sugar
1/4 c. bbq sauce
1/2 c. ketchup (maybe a little more
a splash of mustard
1/4 lb fried ground pork (not sausage)

Sprinkle bacon bits on top (use the real bacon bits)
Bake at 250 for about an hour.

We cut up hot dogs, mix in brown sugar and molasses and place bacon on top...they come out sweet and oh so yummy. In fact next weekend I have a gathering with friends and I make them every year, and usually we throw away an empty pan!

Oooo, that sounds good:)

My aunt makes the best baked beans. I am not sure of the amounts, but I know what she puts in it.

baked beans
Molasses
brown sugar
onions
bacon

She adds cooked/crumbled bacon to the beans, mixes in the rest of the ingredients, tops with strips of bacon, and then bakes it. Somehow she adds just enough molasses and brown sugar so that it is not sickly sweet.

I definitely think the bacon is a go!!!! These are awesome recipes. Thanks to all!

OK, this is what we do for a boy scout campout. So, this is done in a cast iron dutch oven. Doesn't make much difference, it can be done in any pan.

1 lb of hot breakfast sausage.
1 lb of bacon, chopped.

cook both until fairly well done.

Add A couple of sweet onions chopped and a green pepper chopped, optional.
After they are cooked, drain the grease, there will be a lot.

Add a large industrial size can of baked beans. Doesn't really matter what kind.

I add molasses, brown sugar, bbq sauce, mustard, and I add ancho chili powder and chipotle chili powder. The two chili powders can be added to your taste. Chipotle is fairly hot, ancho is smoky flavored, but not very hot. I can't give you exact quantities of each because all of these last ingredients depend on what we have in the kitchen at the campsite, and how it tastes that day.

When we do this, we let it simmer over the coals for as long as possible.

My mom adds ground beef and salsa to hers with just a touch of BBQ sauce.

In mine I add yellow mustard and salsa.
