I’m excited to share some major news for Long Beach. The Department of Transportation has awarded more than $24 million in federal funding for major upgrades at Long Beach Airport. As a senior member of the House Aviation Subcommittee, I’m proud to have helped secure this funding to improve LGB’s infrastructure, upgrade the terminal with new spaces, make traveling more enjoyable for passengers, and invest in Long Beach’s future.

As the former Mayor of Long Beach, I know how important our airport is to our community. Long Beach Airport has already been recognized as one of the best airports in the country, and with this investment, we’re taking it to the next level. We’re making it more modern, more efficient, and ready for the future.

The improvements will expand parts of the terminal, make operations more efficient, and make the airport more comfortable for travelers. These upgrades also help us prepare to welcome the world during the 2028 Olympics, building on recent improvements to our airport, like the expanded travel lanes, safer pedestrian island, ADA ramps, new crosswalk, and improved signage we celebrated back in April.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and finish by 2027, and all airport gates will remain open to avoid disruptions to travelers. This project will also greatly support our local economy, creating nearly 200 local construction jobs and boosting Long Beach’s workforce. By using federal dollars and airport-generated funding, this investment is a huge win that will benefit local workers, travelers, and small businesses in our community.

We’re also fighting to protect communities surrounding airports from harmful pollution. Earlier this year, I introduced the Cutting Lead Exposure and Aviation Relief (CLEAR) Skies Act, which would speed up the shift from leaded aviation fuel toward cleaner, unleaded alternatives for small aircraft. This bill aims to reduce lead pollution and improve air quality for the neighborhoods near airports across the country.

This is a great step forward for Long Beach. These airport improvements will support residents, visitors, and businesses alike, and I will keep working to bring home federal investments that support our community and help our city grow.

Not sure how many use LGB over SNA or LAX, but if you haven't tried it, you should... but it may be under construction for a while. lol

I love LGB!! But I sort of hope it stays small. I love the improvements they've made but if they put in elevated waiting areas so you don't have to go up a ramp or stairs, I'll be kind of sad. It's one of the things that keeps LGB less expensive and with lower traffic.

Agreed, I hope it stays small, the ladders are what it’s all about, and the outdoor waiting areas.!!

We love SNA and LGB!
Eww, not a fan of SNA, it’s so blah and built like a huge airport, but it’s not a huge airport.

I miss those Jet Blue and Virgin flights…..
JetBlue for sure!! I had a whole JB credit card set up for all my SoCal travels, and then the pandemic took it away. :(

So I started using Southwest always and now I’m all over the place, can’t decide which is my preferred, besides whichever has the best times and price.

You’re crazy…. SNA is amazing.

I love LGB. We used to fly into that airport all the time until Jet Blue stopped going there. Now I use SNA which is awesome.

Is it tho? lol

Is there anything that sticks out that makes it awesome? Besides that it means a DisneyIand vacation has begun. :-)
Yes. It is easy to get in and out of… it’s always clean… never crowded… easy to get luggage…. easy to walk to rental cars….. there is a gas station across the street…

My only complaint is that there aren’t enough bathrooms…..

Also, it is amazingly close to Disneyland….

Fly into the hell hole that is Burbank and then get back to me 🤣
