Okay....I think I see the confusion here.
Adapter - will adapt a US plug from any device to fit into a European plug. The issue is that you will still be getting 220 volts and US devices are 110.
Converter - changes European 220 to US 110.
If you plan to use a USA power strip, you will need an adapter AND a converter.
The power strip Mike is suggesting is a converter, so you would only need an adapter to fit the European plug.
Does that help?
I'm not sure thats quite right.
The strip Mike is suggesting is just designed to handle 220 volts, it's not changing the voltage, for that you need a transformer.
Most things people would want to travel with should work with a variety of voltages - ie. iPads/iPhones/iWhatevers, Camera chargers, Laptops etc. They are kinda designed to be used anywhere. Usually on the power brick there will be some mention of acceptable voltage (usually 110-240 or 100-220 or something similar).
Things with motors however will not very much like the change in electricity, they absolutely will go pop - that includes hair dryers.
Just as an aside - the English appear to be scared of electicity - you very rarely will find an outlet in a bathroom in the UK, it is always a small thing that amuses me.
