London / Paris Here We Come!!! 9/2 - 9/10/11

Ok, no one warned me that ABD chat could be dangerous. After all the talk last night about pajamas and shoes, I've done some serious shopping damage in the last 24 hours!

I can't believe we're at the 2 month mark!

What did I miss???

Let's see, what did I get? A pair of the Merrells in black mentioned by several people in chat and in this thread. And a neutral pair of Easy Spirits:

Also some random packing cubes and folders, some cute pajamas (since I've basically been sleeping in Brian's tshirts for years), a plug adaptor thing and something to bring back wine in. And a new purse (not a Birkin!). I think that was it.

I wouldn't worry too much about that exchange rate..what I've found is that what I pay after conversion is usually what I would pay in a larger US city. For instance, take a chicken sandwich in a restaurant here which may be around $10 -you can find a nice Pub in London where you would pay 8 pounds. Converting that would leave you around $12-13, and in many cases no Tip is required -although they might add a service charge. Point is, I never find it as bad as it sounds. Avoid tourist traps -go where the locals go if possible.

I’ve been asking people and looking online for good places to eat and some unique UK food ideas.

Pie and mash is a traditional London dish, it’s pretty cheap and will fill you up. M Manze’s has been suggested.

It’s near London Bridge, here it is on the map

Nearest tube stations are Burmondsey (Jubilee Line) and London Bridge (Northern Line) you can also catch the 188 bus from Russell Square going towards North Greenwich Station (it would take just over 30 minutes and buses run every 30 minutes during the day)

Obviously fish and chips can be found all over the place!

Some recommendations include Fish! at Borough Market (it’s got a restaurant and take away)

This is also a good places to visit if you like food in general – I would definitely recommend trying some British cheeses such as Wensleydale, Cheshire, Red Leicester, Gloucester there are a few more here.

Master Superfish is more of a restaurant than take away but it’s got great reviews and is reasonably priced (for London!)

It’s near Lamberth North (Bakerloo Line) and Waterloo (Northern Line)

Brick Lane is the best place for a curry but there are others, at Borough Market there is Silka

The menu looks fairly extensive and prices are comparable with what we’d pay at home (we’re about an hour north of London)

Sheraz is in Brick Lane

Again the menu looks good, to get there you can get the tube to Aldgate (Metropolitan Line) or the number 25 bus from Holborn going towards Ilford.

On the other end of the scale The Cinnamon Club has good reviews but you pay £14.00 for cauliflower cheese (entrée)!

Moti Mahal looks like a good place for lunch, they have some good offers and some quite unique dishes

It’s in Covent Garden so fairly close to the hotel.

Other places mentioned include Canteen which does traditional British foods such as a roast, pies, shepherds pie, cheeses, fish and chips etc. There are a few locations one near the Royal Festival Hall (near the London Eye), one out near Canary Wharf, Baker Street and Spiatalfields.

The Proms are a series of concerts (usually a season of about 90-100 concerts) that is over 100 years old

The most famous prom event is "the last night of the proms" which features flag waving, horn blowing and 1000's of crazy English people singing Jerusalem and land of hope and glory.

YouTube will provide real life examples of this behavior.

The Proms are great, we saw a Gershwin performance a couple of years ago. It was something different and the Royal Albert Hall is an awesome venue.
