Lock off vs Dedicated?

Just curious why people like one over the other.. I mean if you have a choice, why do you want one over the other?

We always want the lock off which is based on travel party size. If it’s just my husband and I, then we get a 1 bedroom. If it’s the two of us plus my MIL, then we get a 2 bedroom lock off. That way she has her own space with a sitting area. In AUL it makes a huge difference because the 2nd bedroom in the dedicated 2 BRs doesn’t have its own balcony: one of her favorite things is just to sit and relax out there, so the lock off is almost mandatory for us at AUL. The separate sitting area is a sanity saver because everyone has their own sitting space.

We though also have friends who travel either with their extended family OR with another family: they always get the dedicated 2 BRs (at RIV) because they need the sleeping surfaces.

we choose lock-offs when travelling with friends or extended family. Firstly so that each party has their own air-con controls and secondly so we have separate coffee making facilities for those who want to get up crazy early and not wake everyone else up! I’d be lying if I said I don’t occasionally lock myself in the studio portion of the unit when I need a bit of space from the kids as well…

RIV lock offs sleep 10 and dedicated sleep 9 (King + LR Queen & Twin Pull Down + Queen + Queen & Twin Pull Down) vs (King + LR Queen & Twin Pull Down + Queen + Queen)

Aulani I would do the dedicated as it has a powder room.

But it other than that it doesn't matter to us as we will take the King bed :)

Good point about the separate AC Controls!!!

Ah, so one has more sleeping surfaces? That's good to know, but i guess it may depend on the resort?

Yeah it depends on the resort but to be honest we never really pay attention to maximum number of people per room because our max is 3 people to a 2 bedroom. For us it’s really about MIL have her own space.

Yup, i get it.
Max for me would be like 6 & that would be pretty rare, so having 2 bedrooms & the kitchen/livingroom area covers that easy dedicated or lock-off.

That is a great pro tip!! :)

Although could book the lock off and modify it as well I guess since you technically have both rooms at that point?

No, you can't drop part of the room. You would have to cancel the whole reservation and hope that the studio/1 bed is still available to book. It could get picked up by the waitlist or by another member.

What can I say except I’m extremely jealous!! :)

If it was more than the 2 of us, we were traveling with family that had little ones - we always got a dedicated 2Br so that we didn’t have to worry about the kids pulling a Houdini act out their own door…

Doesn't a lock-off have its own door to the outside? We've only gotten a lock-off once, but there were going to be young children in the second bedroom (but not too young to drag a chair over and unlock the door) so we asked for dedicated.

My last Aulani stay, we booked a dedicated 2BR so that my family (2a2k) could use one bedroom (2 queens) and my sister+brother-in-law could use the other bedroom (king), and the kitchen/living room was for socializing.

When I bring my parents with us, this is how we do the sleeping arrangements. My parents are in their early 80's'; so I want us to be able to help them out more easily while giving everyone some amount of privacy.

We usually get a lock-off. I don't know why, but my next two reservations I requested dedicated. I think I should have requested lock-off again. (very young grandchildren). I am not sure yet what the sleeping arrangements will be.

First reservation/trip - myself, DD, DSIL and almost 2 year old grandson.
Second reservation/trip - myself, DS, DDIL 6 year old and almost 2 year old grandsons

You have a little more space in the second bedroom with the dedicated,, but I prefer my own space, entrance, balcony and kitchenette.

Depending on where you are going that second closet can be nice to have.
