Local Medical Assistance?

Hi All - I am taking my daughter and her 4 year old son to DL this Wednesday. It's their very first visit We are staying at the Radisson (Bueno Park), as I got a great 'affordable for us' deal including 3 day Park-Hoppers and free shuttle. Has anyone stayed here before?

Anyway, as our luck would have it ... last night my grandson fell off his birthday-bike into my coffee table and needed 2 x stitches. They need to be taken out on Friday and we have called around some Urgent Cares to see if they can do this. It's possible, but it will make a hole in her budget of around $150 (a lot for her). This is because this service is not recognized as an urgent treatment and she is an out-of-state resident. Does anyone have any other suggestions or recommendations of local practitioners that could help? Thankyou

I do not without the cost. Stitches are very easy to remove and steri-strip the wound after removal. I have removed many over the years, Send me a PM and would be glad to describe. It is more for accessing the wound than the actual removal of the stitches.

Hmmm...I would call my doctor and ask if it absolutely had to be taken out on Friday. Maybe it would be okay to wait a day? If I am looking at your days right, would you be traveling back home on Saturday? Perhaps your doctor would take them out for you on Saturday instead of Friday. At any rate, you wouldn't be charged a out of state fee.

You have good answers to your primary question, but to this one I have a suggestion. Post another Question with "Radisson, Bueno Park" in the title. There is a poster that often comes on here that stays there a lot and if they see it can give you specific details.

My Dr told us to remove them ourselves with small scissors and tweezers. You can buy Johnson & Johnson butterfly strips or steri-strips to put on it after.

I'm a pediartic nurse and grandma. So my unofficial suggestion:

I would buy some cute disney theme bandaids to cover the stitches and wait until you are home to take them out. When the stitches come out there will be a day or so of intense itching and possible a small scab. You most likely want to postpone this until after your trip.

When you get home you can go back on Monday to the doctor or just take them out yourself. Any pair of small tip scissors will do the job. From your sewing bag maybe. Just clean them weith alcohol first.

What you want to look for that will signal problems is growing redness around the site, if it is hot to the touch, or drainage. I don't live in the Disney area so I don't know of the local medical places but if it became emergent the Disney first aid would be able to point you to the nearest appropriate facility.

Just think of the cute pictures and memories you will have from this.

When our kids got ear infections in 2005 while we were on a DLR trip, we found this service which saved our trip:

They sent a doctor (Dr. Klyd) to our hotel room who prescribed antibiotics and also brought some with her. So she filled the prescription herself. Awesome experience!

I'd ask your doctor is either 1) they can wait to come out after you come home or 2) how to remove them yourself.

Removing stitches isn't hard.
A pair of tweezers, pointed scissors and alcohol are all you need.

Clean tweezers and scissors with alcohol.

With the cleaned tweezers lift the suture slightly away from the skin.
With the cleaned scissors snip the suture.

Once you have snipped the suture it generally slides right out.

Thank you so much to everyone. You have put our minds at ease and we will have a go at taking them out ourselves. We will have some Mickey Band-aids on hand! I loved that youtube video too - thank you. Well, we are off tomorrow morning at 3am (leaving) and arriving at HOPEFULLY 4pm. So excited and I love reading all your tips and advice. Here's another idea....

If your daughter or grandson are nervous about having the sutures removed, here is what you can do for a test run.

Find a stuffed animal your grandson likes?
Take a needle and thread and give the stuffed animal stitches too.
Don't make the stitches too tight. You want to be able to lift them slightly.

When it's time to remove his stitches, show him how you are going to do it, by removing the stuffed animals stitches first.
You can even have him help you.

This might make things go smoother.
