A local organized march by illegal immigrants this morning opposing upcoming immmigration legislation was visited by INS agents who arrested 15 wanted individuals with outstanding warrants ranging from drunken driving, driving without license, larceny, and one rape charge. Since illegal immigrants want all the rights of US citizens I hope they get the right to a nice prison cell!

Karma baby, its a b!

Only 15? Well its a start. "Illegal aliens, committing the crimes that Americans don't want to commit!"

Well, THAT was an enterprising move by INS!

The news said we had approx. 350,000 protesters yesterday. I am just AMAZED it didn't erupt in violence. I am very, very pleased that it was peaceful - I don't want anybody to get hurt - but I certainly expected altercations to break out. The paper had a list of places that were closed and activities that were cancelled in and around downtown because they didn't want to deal with the march. It was interesting to watch on TV, but I am glad I didn't have to go downtown for anything. They said it was 2 hours from the time the front of the line started moving until the folks in the back started to walk!

The only thing I don't understand, is if you are an illegal immigrant, can't the INS come get you at any time? They don't need a protest to come get you, although I suspect it's easier to find you if you are participating... Just a thought :confused3

They can, but they just don't have the resources to walk the streets looking for people. I don't think local law enforcement can do anything about it, either.

INS usually catches people who are already in the system.

I think they should have taken more than just 15, but as Dawn said, it's a start.

The reason INS didn't take more is b/c of the process required to expel an illegal. Locally, we have had cases come through the court system with illegals who are charged with Forgery (for having fake IDs and trying to get on the military base with a contractor for work), and while we notify the INS every time we have a plea, it is rare for them to try to pick the case up and expel the person (even though they pled to a FELONY!)

As I understand it, the INS would have to arrange for a hearing and then provide the transport to the border, so it is both a question of housing until the hearing (generally a federal prison - does everyone remember all the people who ended up in the Atlanta Fed Pen after the boatlift? Some were there for YEARS), and the cost of transporting all the people back to the Mexican border.

They can't just go and take anybody, they need to have a record or a warrant. Not all of them are wanted for a felony like that.
And they aren't INS anymore, I think. :) INS is now ICE or Dep. of Homeland security.

GOOD! :thumbsup2

There is a march going on here locally too. There are legels and illlegels there. They even had flyers going around advertising for,"Don't go to work or go shopping today, let's show them how much they need us." I want people to have a chance at the American dream as the next person, but what is REALLY sad with this whole march thing is that they keep saying things like,"We're marching for our rights!" Hello? Since when did someone illegel have any American rights? I saw a little of the news this afternoon about it, but I had to turn it off, I couldn't stand it. All you could see was a sea of foreign flags being carried. If they want to be Americans so badly wouldn't it do better for their cause to flaunt the American flag? :confused3

Plus their out their on 2 of the major roads that people are on trying to get home from work right now, at rush hour!!!!!!!!!! :furious:

Very true.

They had a big march here in Atlanta too, but they had the American flag.

The news was talking about "Not a penny Monday" where the illegal folks were supposed to boycott stores to day to show their buying power. I wonder if their buying power is greater than the tax money it costs to provide free medical care and education to them? Oops, didn't mean to say that out loud.

i said the same thing to my DH this morning, mommypoppins-"they're ILLEGAL immigrants, they HAVE NO RIGHTS!" every time i see this excrement on tv, it makes me want to scream. i not only find it ironic that they're protesting for rights they're not legally entitled to, but that they're flaunting themselves in the streets, knowing the INS doesn't have the manpower to show up and round 'em up.

They've been running a clip on the news from a march held here. The girl they interviewed was trying to say something about wanting to stay forever and work, but I could only get part of it because she couldn't really speak English. If you want to get a message across to the American public, you might want someone to speak that the majority of the people can understand.

No kidding! Just you try to go to Mexico, protest in the street, wave American flags and then get an illegal job. See how quickly YOU end up in jail! I am so sick of hearing TED KENNEDY and HILLARY CLINTON shouting that they are law abiding people who are working hard and paying their taxes. What taxes??? The sales tax at Taco Bell!!??

85% do not speak English. They left their Mexican flags home today but I am not fooled and no one else should be either. If they want jobs, hire them to build the wall.....on the Mexican side!

I am thrilled the INS did something. It is a start. I have no problem with people coming here legally. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I was someone who came here legally and spent years and a lot of $$$$ in doing it the correct way.

We have laws to control the numbers who come in each year. We need to know who we let in. Are they healthy? That alone is a big enough concern for me. Criminal background? I would think that would concern everyone on both sides of the issue.

These protests with all the pandering politicians is sickening.

They should surround them with tasers, load them into trucks, and ship them south of the border. Then we could let the ones back in who can prove they are U.S. citizens.
