Local Disney Store is Closing

i recently visited the disney store in Roosevelt field on long island ny. i was a bit excited because with this mall being one of the largest malls in the country i was hoping for a chance to see more "adult" merchandise and collectibles. to say i was very disappointed would be an understatement. if you were shopping for a child it was an excellent store but shopping for adult shirts and collectables better off online. one snowglobe available and that was for brave.

While the Disney Store used to carry a greater variety of items than they do now, I still think it's a great store! You can still find adult items ( t-shirts, pajamas, coffee mugs, cups, etc), just not as many collectibles, which has a smaller, niche market. Disney is in it for the money and the collectibles don't sell as well as toys. It's pure supply and demand economics.

I think part of it to us that the quality of the product is so poor.

As in everything we buy in the US is sweatshop produced low quality stuff (most everything...let's not kid ourselves)...but the Disney store stuff is low by even that low standard.

The other thing we've noticed with our kids - particularly our kids - is that they keep putting out gaudy products.

You can dress your kids cute and NOT have it look ridiculous - but most if what they sell in the Disney store is just over the top.

The reality is that the new stressing of Disney product in Target yields better product.

The reality is that the disney store peaked over ten years ago and suffered from overexpansion - first - but most significantly due to the decline in merchandise quality and selection...

and of course...online outlets/ sales. online sales have been destroying retail for years...and that trend will continue.

Disney will more than likely embrace a wider array of online options as time goes on and shift some of their retail to a model more like amazon.

The disney stores are kinda obselete...even if its nice to have them.

We have a "new" disney store a couple of miles away (cherry hill, nj) and honestly, its kinda a bad store. Not a great array of merchandise.

On the contrary...an "older" store i was recently at in Eatontown, NJ was way better...lots more of merchandise on the shelves. So i'm not that attached/ fond of them anymore.

In the pre-internet age when i was in high school and we could go look at alot of more unique stuff...the disney stores were really a thing out of the ordinary.

Now they aren't.

I actually am surprised that the disney parks haven't embraced somekind of online shopping service to travelers within the parks themselves - somekind of an interface system where you can carry a virtual shopping cart over your stay and have what you want shipped en masse at the end of your stay or at a later date via remote warehouse and shipping facilities....

this allows the shopper to go nuts without any concern to the logistics involved in travel...and could provide a low maintenance alternative for parents/grandparents/collectors who may buy a little more if it were easier.

Good post. Sadly most of the stuff Disney sells now whether online or in a store is junk.:(

Again, they put out junk and wonder why stores can't make it?

I disagree about Target's Disney toys being better than Disney Store's. The faces on the dolls at Target do not compare to the ones at Disney Store! Rapunzel doesn't look anything like the Rapunzel from Tangled. Neither do Cinderella or Snow White.....

The dress up clothes are much cuter at Disney Store than at Target. I haven't looked at the Toy Story or Cars toys at Target so I can't compare those.

On my last trip to WDW, I noticed a few of the same items in the gift shops are what is sold at the Disney Store. Of course, it was marked up 10% for being at WDW......

I was speaking more of clothing...non-"dress up" type.

The regular toys seem to be of at least equal and sometimes better than some of the junkola that they sell at the Disney store...

But the dress-up stuff is generally hideous - both at the normal retail outlets and the dis store.

There's a reason that rhinestones, glitter, and sequins aren't in vogue anywhere: it looks ridiculous even on six year olds

We had a Disney store in my hometown mall years ago(like in the 90s lol) but it closed and now theres a Pac Sun in it's place :sad2: A friend of mine once showed me a pic he had of the Disney Store sign in his room! To this day I still wonder how he got that! Although our store is gone, I still visit the Disney Store whenever my family and I go on a shopping trip toTanger Outlet. A lot of the stuff is kind of aimed at kids, but they had a few neat knick knacks there. I bought a cute Mickey and Donald lemonade pitcher a couple of years ago:)
