The Running Thread - 2026

For me, lots of vasoline or Vick's vaporub helps prevent blisters. The bodyglide and such do not provide near as much friction protection. If I have a blister already, then I will apply vasoline or vaporub under the bandaid and then all over it too. During the last Dopey, I got a blister during the 10k and did the above for the half and marathon. Made it through both of those okay (had to add more vasoline during the marathon).

QOTD: How careful are you about potential exposure to illness leading up to an A race?

I'm in the same situation as you - I am aiming for a big jump in my PR for Chicago. If I had a similar event 2 weeks ahead of the race, I'd absolutely go- but I'd be careful. I also think the timing may be good - you really aren't into the peak of flu season yet. Honestly for me, I'm more concerned about catching something at Chicago and being down for the count 2 weeks later at W&D. (And because the US has Flu/ COVID vaccines available about a month before we do in Canada, I might just drive across the border pre-Chicago and load up)

Thanks for the responses to QOTD -- it's given me some good perspective. I'm not particularly susceptible to illness, so yes I'm being a little paranoid. And I appreciate those who pointed out that a lot can change between now and then, so why take away the option so soon? So I'm going to RSVP yes and hope that I'm in a position to proceed with caution and enjoy the events when the time comes.

I’m not sure where to post this but I felt like I need to share this somewhere, for any of my fellow RunDisney and Peloton fans — Cody recorded a 20 min Pop Ride on Friday 1/30 that is just all the songs from the Guardians of the Galaxy ride! He goes on at length about his fondness for Disney (and his fondness for the alcoholic beverages at Epcot, fair warning). A fun ride!!

It’s not labeled as a “Disney” ride so it’s a little under the radar. 😀

QOTD: How careful are you about potential exposure to illness leading up to an A race?

I'd love to hear some advice here on which direction to go. Have you been in a similar situation, and if so, what did you do?

ATTQOTD: I have my A goal marathon next weekend. I was sooo paranoid about getting sick at MW because I had just been sick at Christmas and missed a peak training week. I was scared to miss either of my final 2 peak weeks post MW. I wore a mask EVERYWHERE. I also used a ton of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes.

@garneska @Fischstick @camaker @princesspirateandrunner @akrosie @marty3d and whoever else was interested in the Lake Hartwell Dam Runs in May:

The Dam Race is going to be altered this year. That refurbishment project, that was supposed to be put off for three years after funds were cut, was put back on the Corps of Engineers calendar. They will start replacing the flood gates and refurbishing turbines in March and hope to be finished before the race in 2027.

After lots of negotiations, we will have a short version of the race. Instead of a 5k and a 10K, they can only guarantee us a single 4k race that will start at Big Oaks as usual, but will only go across the earthen part until we get to the staged equipment/ materials area, turn around, and go back. DH and I are very disappointed, since I had hoped to see many of you here. I’m not sure an uncertified, 4k race is what any of you will be interested in, but we hope to have some participation from folks around here, and we will keep up the streak by still having the “48th Annual Lake Hartwell Dam Run” even if is abbreviated. If you are still interested, it should be on Run Signup soon.
Oh, no! That is disappointing, but I’m glad you were able to negotiate an event to keep things going this year. We’ll plan to come, and look forward to seeing y’all! I’m glad the refurbishments aren’t scheduled to interfere with the 50th anniversary race. Tell them we said to get busy and get finished!

Ok bit of an odd one here, but has anyone done any running in India (Mumbai and Bangaluru in particular)? Heading over for work in first part of March for the first time and while I assume I will be relegated to the hotel dreadmill (given congestion, security, etc.) I thought I would check with the collective in case I am (hopefully) wrong.

I have never been to India however my non running husband has been several times for work. He essentially wasn't allowed to leave his hotel without an escort/driver.

The Washington Post just had a story about how the air quality in New Delhi is like smoking a pack a day (or was it more?). Mumbai is similar. I visited in Mumbai in 2018 for a conference and stayed a few extra days for tourism. You can literally see the smog dome over the city. For that reason, I would not encourage outdoor running.

While we were doing sightseeing in Mumbai, I did see some folks who presumably were from the city running along a sort-of park area along part of the bay - it's not an extensive area. There really aren't a lot of good places to run. The sidewalks are tiny, jumbled, and packed with people. The streets are packed with traffic. There must be SOMEplace where the locals run, but I'm not sure it would really be worth seeking out.

This is a huge thing. If you haven't been there before, you will be surprised about the level of security. For my conference, I stayed in a medium-good hotel, and we still had to go through security and x-ray machines to get into the hotel. All travel between the hotel and the university for the conference was in cars + drivers, and when the cars brought us back, the security people examined them (i.e., mirrors to look underneath the cars, look in the trunks) before we were allowed in.

When I stayed extra for sightseeing (my husband joined me then), we got a high-end hotel because the exchange rate meant it wasn't that expensive. All of that previous security was heightened, and there was an armored military vehicle parked outside the hotel entrance...you know, just in case.

It's definitely a very different experience.

But if you do get a little time for sightseeing, take advantage of it. Lots of museums, etc., and even when you pay the non-citizen prices, it's all still very cheap.

Two other suggestions:

Probably you know to be careful to drink only bottled water and not tap water. Make sure you know the provenance of the bottles, as enterprising individuals will refill plastic bottles to look like new. When walking around, we considered buying a lemonade from a vendor....then saw that you had to drink it all right there, give the non-disposable glass back, they rinsed it out, and then filled it for the next person. Food preparation cleanliness is not universal.

Get a roll of toilet paper and keep it in your bag; most public bathrooms will be out of TP, and unless you know how to use the rinsing hoses (forget what they are called) by each toilet, you will literally be SOL.

Okay this one is right up my alley. I just got back from India (1 week in Pune and 1 week in Navi Mumbai) and I've had 8 trips in the last 2 years.

1. Mumbai is huge and it's really diverse. There are definitely places to run outsite. The waterfront area by the Oberio hotel (Marine Drive) is really nice to run but I think it's only about a 5K long. While the area is big uber is cheap there. a 45 minute ride is usually > $4 and you can use the uber app. I'd run along there in the morning. I've done some runs there but I mainly wind up running on the treadmill.

Other random tips.
1. If you can get a sim card with a local phone number you can sign up for blinkit, swiggy or flikart. Both blinket and flipkart will deliver most things to your hotel in 10 minutes (It makes amazon look like chumps) Swiggy and Zomato are great too for food delivery. There are a lot of options if you don't want to get tired of room service. (you need a local number for the OTP to sign up for these apps)
2. If the hotel has a spa the services are pretty nice and cheap. At my Marriot last week 60 minute sport massages were $40 and pedicures were $10
3. When flying out of India there security it wierd. They will flag your bag if there are any cords or batteries in it. I pull all them out before I go through security. (also customs in mumbai can take a long time 30-45minutes or more to when you are leaving)
4. If you have time Elephanta caves are really cool (2000 year old caves with carvings in them and Monkey's roaming around), You need a half day or so for that as it's a boat ride from the gateway of india. Also across from the Gateway of india is the Taj hotel on the ground floor they have a lot of pictures of people like the beatles that have stayed there. It was a site of a terrorist attack in the 2000s and they offer tour.
5. If you have less time the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum is pretty neat and covers a wide range of things. There is a fee for it.
6. I've found in a lot of areas like my office smaller vendors don't want to take cash or card. Everything is done via UPI. I think you can use google pay or if you don't have that sign up for an app like Mony so you can pay for stuff.

If you want any other tips I am happy to help.

NYC Marathon Lottery opens today, for all who celebrate
I think I’m going to wait until after W&D registration to see if I get into the challenge. As low as the lottery odds are and as much as I want to run NYC again it would be a really bad idea for me to run Chicago, W&D and NYC in 3 weeks. Now watch me still do something crazy. The odds are really low right? 😂

I don't even really want to run NYC: I hear the start logistics are crazy for all those people to get to an island, and I'm trying to take a break from marathons. But I have this stupid calculus that goes like: it's almost impossible to get in, so why not enter the lottery? You won't get picked and you won't have to run it. But I can also not run it by... just not entering the lottery. I guess I feel like it's a bucket list race so you should just enter every year just in case, whether you actually want to run it or not.
I like to think of it like, I'm not making the decision whether to run it, the Lottery Gods are.
I put the closing date for the lottery in my calendar. So far (at 8am on the first day) I'm doing a good job not entering.

I just back from a checkup, and the doctor was telling me to just be aware of and taking care of my joints as I get older. He then told me about a 70-something year old female patient at a prior practice. Seems she had osteoporosis and the bouncing while running was causing small stress cracking in her vertebra. She was cautioned to be doing only walking, and wound up with at least three surgeries to fuse vertebra, yet refused to quit with the running. That is a bit too hard core for me. (Somewhat related: friend telling me about her ex who is big into power lifting and has had multiple knee surgeries due to squats and other lifts, and continues with those exercises even though he is ruining the results of the prior surgeries.)
I am dreading the day if/when I have to give up running, but I will drop down to walking when that day comes, and especially if it keeps me from undergoing multiple surgeries.

NYC marathon: NYC and Chicago are on my bucket list; I was going to enter NYC in order to start the lottery wheel turning. I thought that after so many rejections, that you would be entered. Is that still true?

I've looked into toe socks before, but I have pretty terrible circulation in my feet. I've tried toe socks for regular socks before and my feet would get freezing, so I stopped trying to make them work.
I should have added a bit more context to my response. I wear the toe socks for running and only for running, and even then, only for a Half or a Full. For my training runs, it is regular ankle socks. And when I do wear the toe socks, I typically have a thin pair of regular ankle socks over them. My feet tend to get cold as well, but I have not experienced that with the double socks for the longer events, even during pre-race waiting. I've also started applying moleskin to the known blister areas, basically wrapping a strip of moleskin all the way around the offending toes, usually the night before so I don't have to mess with it on race morning. The moleskin seems to stay in place much better than any bandages, especially if it wraps most of the way around. FWIW, I've tried the different anti-chafe sticks, and they may help some, but what has worked best for me is physical barriers, so the moleskin for toes, and short tights under my shorts for chub-rub on my thighs.
As always, YMMV, but that is what works for me.

I’ve also developed a requiring blister between my big toe and the next toe over, which I really am disliking this close to princess. It took about 5 days for it to go away and feel better, but I went on a long run yesterday (about a day and half after it resolved) and it came back even bigger. Even with blister prevention and body glide on! So I’m slapping on everything and anything to my toe hoping it will at least relieve some pain.

One more thing to try is a blister spray. I started using this spray. I spray this on, let it dry, and then add Squirrel Nut Butter (similar to Body Glide) on top. But this mainly for prevention. To deal with an active blister, I use blister pads and let them do their thing.

Unfortunately, they got rid of that years ago. It used to be, if I remember correctly, 3 rejections for NYC got you in. I looked into it back in 2012 but was already signed up for an October full and Goofy 2013 so I didn't enter and then it was either the next year or the year after they did away with that (unless you already had started in the rejections) and I was kicking myself.

I was planning on running NYC this year, but I entered Chicago thinking "I definitely won't get picked" and then was picked. I already have a trip planned in August, September, October (Chicago), December, and January (Dopey). I feel like it might be too much to add another trip in there from my work's perspective. But it also seems like a waste to *not* enter the lottery knowing how hard it is to get in.

Does anyone know if NYC has a deferral option?

OK, I checked the website and this is what it says:

All TCS New York City Marathon fees are nonrefundable, and you may not reenter the current year's race after you've cancelled your entry.
If you cancel in a given year (and did not cancel the previous year), you are eligible for guaranteed entry the following year. To enter the race the following year, you must claim your guaranteed entry and pay the entry fee during the application window.

Am I reading correctly that if I get in this year and choose not to run, that I'm guaranteed entry next year? It would just cost this year's registration fees?
