I apologize for the strange post...we're new to island travel and my 13 year old has her heart set on looking for lizards in Nassau and at Castaway Cay...will there be many for her to see??? (not to keep, or harm, just to observe!)

They just don't seem to make it to very many trip reports if they are out there :)

She will not have any problem finding lizards, the small ones. I doubt she will see anything bigger, like a iguana, but you never know. We live in Florida, and get such a giggle, when we see the kids go crazy over catching a lizard. They are all over the place. Have a good time!

:) We live outside Yellowstone, so we feel the same way about buffalo!!!! Always funny to see people pull over to watch them, they're everywhere!!!! Thanks for the posts, I'm glad she won't be disappointed-she would have loved to do the dolphin encounter, but lizards are going to be much more in my price range!!!!!!

Thanks again for your replies!!!!

It depends where you are going, there are iguanas all over the place in St Maarten, big ones! Just hanging out by the side of the road. Maybe something to use for leverage for a future cruise ;) "Behave yourself and next time we'll cruise to lizard island". :lmao:

Yup. Definitely seen them on CC. We actually have a couple of photos where Pluto was "playing" with one.

you can come to my house, i'm sure she could find some...
i just chased one down last night and banished it to the yard....

but watch out for the scorpions...i found one of those in my basement too...that one i didn't banish from the house, that one i whacked to death with my sandal.....

St. Maarten has an Iquana Infestation. From the moment you get off the ship, they're on the rocks everywhere ... downright gross. Reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, only with Lizards.

Ummm now I am scared. Scorpions on CC?? I can handle Barry the barracuda, and even sharks...but scorpions are iut of my comfort zone...

Omg I've been to Castaway Cay twice & never saw any insects whatsoever ! I would have a major MI ( heart attack ) if I saw a scorpion or any spider larger than a quarter !

--I've seen several on CC near the dining/picnic areas. They are small and very fast. The biggest I've seen were on Cozumel as they were almost the size of a housecat.

This size iguana were at the beach in St. Thomas...just out of view were about five more....and...we were told to be careful around them during mating season as the males get VERY aggressive and will strike out at you.

Also saw them at Cozumel beaches.

Yep! Mainly just small ones in Nassau and Castaway Cay, but as someone else mentioned.....for future DCL cruise bookings.....we have found some HUGE lizards/iguanas in Cozumel, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas! They love grapes! ;)

Here are a few of our giant lizard encounters. We don't have any pics of the small, quick lizards in Nassau and Castaway Cay. They are just too darn fast! Trust me, I've tried to chase them! :rotfl2: The little ones in Mexico are easier to catch!

My daughter was only 3 1/2 in this pic. This was in Cozumel, DCL Magic 2009.

Castaway Cay, Disney Fantasy 2012. Since we couldn't keep up with the little lizards, we settled for collecting small sand crabs. (All of which were catch & release....no sand crabs were harmed in this activity. :lmao: )

If you stay in Cocoa Beach the night before, you will probably see several of the small ones before you even get to Nassau or Castaway Cay!

We typically have at least one lizard in the house each week, and always have to avoid stepping on them outside the house. :)

Your daughter will find plenty of anoles on CC, they are everywhere in Florida too. They are also common in coastal southeast US too, they climb up all over the pool cage at our house in Alabama. We also have cute little geckos, but I haven't seen any of those at CC.

In all my years here at the DIS, I don't think I've ever noticed user names as much as this morning!

To the OP ~ Love yours! DS & I are both archers. :goodvibes
To perdidobay ~ Love that one too!! Love those books so much...

And LOL at the "lizard island" thing... I've never seen too many of them on St. Maarten, but those giant iguanas have always been all over St. Thomas when we've been there!
