You can go inside both John and Paul's homes as they are not private residences but owned by The National Trust. They offer tours inside both those homes, but they are largely furnished with replica artefacts of the era rather than the original furnishings. There are some original photos though. As individuals you are not allowed to take photos and this is strictly adhered to. It is essential to book those tours in advance and they leave from the Albert Dock area. The problem is though that these tours take quite a while and would cut into your day for doing anything else.
You can also see the house where George Harrison lived, and I'm surprised to hear that its considered unsafe. It's not unsafe in my opinion because its usually crowded with tourists. However, in the last year or so I believe that the current owner has complained about the large coach tours and vast amounts of people walking up to the front door, and so tour groups are no longer allowed to walk down the street, but individuals still can do.
Some tours like the Magical Mystery Tour end at The Cavern Club and you can enter and have a drink and listen to the performers there. There is no additional charge for this. The Cavern Club is not the absolute original club, which is actually a couple of doors down. It has been faithfully replicated though.
There is a stunning tour inside The Kasbah Coffee Club situated outside Liverpool at a place called West Derby which was the place that the Beatles performed in their very early days when called the Quarrymen. It is still owned by the Best family ( the family of the original drummer Pete Best) and this has been preserved as it was in the original period and is the most authentic tour that can be found, but again this must be booked in advance and if you are not familiar with the city you would have to get a taxi and it it's quite a way outside the city center. It would also take some time. I can really recommend this though if you want pure authenticity, and don't need to see too much more in this one port stop.
There is so much to see, and you will be spoilt for choice if you are Beatles fans. As another poster said after so much reality The Beatles Experience is interesting but lacking in much that is authentic.
