Live room report from HHI

The bikes can be rented from the recreation window at the Broad Creek building near the pool. I'm not sure of the exact pricing as my DW handled the rental. The rental window was already closed by the time we got settled into our room on Sunday, and we didn't get out of the room until about 10AM yesterday, so all of the Disney resort's bikes were already rented.

The people at the rental window gave us the number of a local rental agency that honored the Disney member rate for us. We called them and in about an hour, they delivered the four bikes right outside our unit and will pick them up with no charge. I think for the week, the price was about $90 including tax.

The Lowcountry Boil is a traditional celebration style meal that they put on twice a week at the Beach House (looking in local tourist activity magazines, it seems lots of other resorts on HHI do the same thing) - steamed shrimp, crabs, corn on the cob, red potatoes... it sounds very good. For the kids, they have lots of activities going on for the 2 hours as well, face painting, etc. We're looking forward to it very much and I'll post a full review.

We're headed to community hall at 9AM for the ladybug activity and then at 11 we have the Disney geocaching activity. We've been geocaching for years, so a lot of the introductory stuff is not going to matter to us, but it will be fun to hunt for their cache (or caches) that they have in the resort.

This afternoon the weather is supposed to clear, but if it doesn't we're planning to head off the resort to The Sandbox children's museum. We've heard mixed things, but it looks like a nice place to try on a rainy day.

Everything sounds great. Can't wait for your lowcountry boil review. Activities sound fun too. Are you planning a dolphin tour? Any places to go mini golf?

We will bring our own bikes. We will also be driving I-81. I will have to look up Luray Caverns. Thanks for your driving report.

Ted, thanks for posting - we're coming down from PA also for our first HHI trip - will arrive this coming Saturday. Can't wait!!!!

One question - are you having any problems with no-see-ums?

Today was a full day... we had the Geocaching activity at 11 and it was fun. They had 6 caches hidden around the resort and had the lat/lon already plugged in for each one. We had an hour to find the 6 caches, answer Disney trivia questions that were contained in each cache and return for a prize if we got them all right.

We had a good time with finding all but one of the caches - turns out one of the other participants retrieved the cache and brought it back to the starting point rather than leaving it there for someone else to find. Our girls still earned their reward - a free Pirates of the Carribbean watch for each. I'm sure they were overstock items - and were only worth about $5.00 when new, but a pretty nice prize for a free activity.

After the caching, we went for a bike ride - we exchanged the bike for our little one for a tow-behind wagon for her and we all had much more fun. The giggles of excitement from the wagon were priceless in and of themselves.

Back to the room for lunch, and then off to the pool for a swim... what we won't do for the kids. We checked the thermometer outside Broad Creek mercantile before we got in the pool - 58 degrees!! :scared1: What we won't do for our kids. After about an hour in the pool it was time for the dragonfly activity for DW and DD6. I took DD3 back to the room for a much needed nap.

After the nap, it was time to head to the Beach House for the Lowcountry Boil. My overall review of this is mixed. The food was good... the attentiveness of the staff was excellent as usual... the activities for the kids were underwhelming, but fun nonetheless... the biggest problem was in the organization (or lack thereof). We arrived at the beach house right at the stated 6PM starting time. We were shown where our table was and shown to the line where we had to pay and get our wristbands for dinner.

The problem was that the line for the wristbands was also the bar at the beach house - so people in line just to pay for the dinner had to wait while the bartenders made mixed and/or frozen drinks for other patrons also in the same line... it was really frustrating and took about 20 minutes just to get through the line and be able to get our wristbands... not what I expect from a Disney run event.

Once that was past, everything was fine - the facepainting line took a long time, but DD6 and her friend had a good time just waiting in line and talking - it actually gave us parents a chance to eat our dinner before she needed help finding food that she wanted to eat. The food itself was VERY good. The shrinp and smoked sausage boil (with corn on the cob and red potatoes) was the obvious star - and it was very well done - the shrimp especially was very yummy. I also sampled the shrimp gumbo (yummy), apple cider marinated pork tenderloin (a bit overcooked by tasty - but I like my pork rare anyway, so you can't necessarily go by me), fried catfish and hush puppies (yummy).

All the while we were eating , B'Lou Crabbe was playing banjo and singing - at one point he invited all the kids up to join him by playing simple percussion instruments - tambourine, rhythm sticks, washboard, etc. - it was a lot of fun... our girls were too shy to go up then, but later just before we left, they had wandered over to see him still playing and he invited them to play along and this time they took him up on it. I got some great video of just them playing with him.

Overall, I liked the Low Country Boil, and it was a nice way to spend a night out of the room and quite a good meal for the money.

After dinner, we headed back to community hall for Goofy Bingo - both of our daughters won a game and had a great time. Finally after Goofy bingo, we grabbed the bikes again for an evening ride around the resort - the wind had died down and the evening was the most pleasant part of today from a weather standpoint.

I still haven't downloaded pictures - that might have to wait until this weekend, but I did get some good twilight/sunset photos of the resort tonight as I took a walk around during Goofy Bingo.

A full day and night - the kids practically passed out when we got them to bed - hopefully they'll sleep in a bit in the morning.

No problems whatsoever. We haven't even seen (or felt) any flying bugs at all in our 3 days here.

It's been so great, that we've taken to leaving the doors to our balcony open - it's enough to let us pick up the wi-fi signal from Broad Creek Mercantile here inside our bedroom, instead of just out on the balcony :)

We're hoping to go over Thanksgiving week with our 3 boys ages 7, 3 and 3. We're driving and could easily bring the twins' bikes along in the back of the car but they are only 12 inch bikes and aren't really great for a full family outing. We'd rent bikes for DS 6 and ourselves.

Can you tell me about the bike trailer. Does 1 trailer hold 2 children? Also, can you give some details on the price of renting adult and childrens bikes, as well as a bike trailer.

Thanks, I really appreciate your reports. The geocaching sounds like something we'll try too!

Sounds ike another fun day. My guys would've been frustrated with a missing cache, but I'm glad to know that is a possibility so if we have a similar experience, I can say "hey, I read once on the DISBoards where..." (if I quote the DIS, my guys take it as gospel...).

What is the pricing for the LCB? Adults / Jrs / Children? (Gotta work on the spring break budget for next year...)

Hope you all get a good sleep in today.

When we were at Vero Beach, we had the Inn room right next to the Green Cabin Room so we were able to enjoy the use of the WiFi in our room rather than going to the lobby or the hallway or even having to sit on the balcony. It was nice.

If it is the yellow plastic "covered" trailer, I saw someone with two small children in one while we were there. One little entrepreneur that my younger sons met had one attached to his bike and he was giving kids rides around the resort for $1.00. :) He had made about $10 the last time we saw him before they checked out. Not sure how long he worked at it though.

Yesterday was another fun day. We did sleep in a bit more (the girls actually stayed in their room so DW and I didn't have any mid-night visitors climbing up into bed with us).

Once we were up, we went out to Adventure Cove for mini-golf. (Even though we're not in Orlando, as we prepared to leave the resort for the first time all week for an activity, I found that I was thinking "what do I need to take with me when I go 'off-world' :))

The highlight of that outing was that DD6 actually can play mini-golf now so she had a real score of 70 (may not sound great, but she only had to take the 6-stroke maximum on 2 holes out of 18) - and she had two holes-in-one in a row!

After mini-golf, we had lunch at a local diner and the girls got to put coins in and choose songs on a real jukebox to listen to while we ate.

Back to the resort for the Pirates of the Calibogue (sp?) treasure hunt. We all took turns holding our Pirate flag or the treasure map and we were able to find our key to the treasure chest. Another fun, fun family activity for free - especially for those with younger kids.

After the treasure hunt, we hit the pool again - a much better day for it as it was not windy, the sun was shining and the temperature was about 70 degrees.

At 3 PM, I took DD3 back to the room for a nap (which I also took yesterday - that was why there was no mid-day update to this thread) while DW and DD6 went to a character pillow making activity - they came home with two very nice fleece pillows that they tied together and stuffed themselves.

After the naps were done, we went over to the playground near building 24. The kids played while we cooked our dinner on the grills - burgers, dogs, grilled corn on the cob and our favorite unusual grill recipe we recently learned: grilled braised leeks. I can post a link to the recipe on food network if anyone is interested. Using the grills was a great way to have a "home cooked" meal without messing up the kitchen in our home - when we were all done, we just threw all the paper and plastic utensils in the trash cans there and headed on our way.

Also, we got to eat dinner while watching the sun set on a beautiful cloudless evening over the waters of Broad Creek. I got some great pictures of the sun setting behind the fishing pier.

After dinner, we went to the campfire and the Broad Creek building. The cast members put on a great show and EVERYONE had fun. DW answered a trivia question at the start and our family got to be the bell ringers (except for the fact that the rope on the camp bell broke a while back, so we couldn't really ring the bell) - we just went to the top of the steps overlooking the campfire pit and yelled out "ding-a-ling" to get things started.

Lots of singing of campfire songs, and then the S'mores. DD6 got to be first in line for the s'mores and boy were they yummy!

All-in-all another magical day on vacation together. I really am beginning to think that HHI is the secret gem of the DVC resorts when it comes to family vacationing - especially when it comes to families with young kids.

Today is a less full day - probably another stop at the pool and this afternoon, if it warms up the way the forecast says, we'll head over to the beach.

The member price for the LCB was $24.95 for adults and $8.95 for children 3-10. Kids under 3 eat free.

Someone above asked about the Sand Gnats (no see'ums) in the area. They haven't been too bad this week, but, the last few were pretty nasty. They tend to come out in the afternoon or evening when the temps are between 65 and 75. Keep Skin So Soft handy and you will be fine. A 50% soultion of SSS and water works best.

Now, if you are talking about the Savannah Baseball team Sand Gnats, I haven't been to a game yet, but, they are always fun.

We went over to HHI a few weeks ago for a visit. It is an very relaxing place.

Conan, thanks for the info on the gnats. I saw mention elsewhere about using skin so soft, I'll make sure to pack some just in case!

Only two days to go!

Yesterday turned out to be another pretty full day... lots of fun was had by all.

We got up and had breakfast. Then DD6 and I went to the refrigerator magnet painting activity, while DW and DD3 went for a bike ride. After that activity, we all had fun at the shuffleboard court where B'Lou Crabbe was telling the tales of Shadow the dog and how she grew up on Longview island.

After B'Lou was done, we went back to our villa for lunch, then headed for the pool again. Yesterday was a long pool visit as the temperature was finally up into the mid 70s. We gave the kids the option of going to the beach - but they chose to go to the pool at the resort. I guess they realize that they always have the beach option in the summers (my parents have a house at the Jerset shore and we spend at least 1 weekend a month there in the summertime).

After pool was nap time and then at 6PM, DD6 headed for kids night out on the resort grounds while DD3 went downstairs to visit with our friends who were traveling with us... giving DW and me a night out ourselves. We had looked through a local restaurant menu magazine and just decided to drive around to see what we could find in the way of seafood. We came across Red Fish which was a couple of miles further down the island from the Disney resort - near where the Cross Island parkway comes in.

The dinner at Red Fish was VERY good. My DW had the mahi mahi stuffed with Crab, and I had the surf and turf, which was Kobe Beef and giant prawns - thoroughly delicious.

That dinner was our one big night out, and it was still reasonable compared to the Philadelphia area for a fine restaurant (or to Orlando for that matter).

This morning, was checkout day... we got our room charge, which had nearly all of our expenses from the trip on it (just the grocery run at the start of the week, the bike rentals with the off-site company, and last night's dinner at Red Fish were missing) and we couldn't believe our eyes - It was well under $400.00 - and that included about $200 worth of clothing, toys and other souvenirs from Broad Creek Mercantile. The activities that we had done on-site were VERY reasonable. I figure that the park tickets in Orlando, now that my youngest is over the age of 3, would have been twice that much alone!)

And we had such a relaxing and enjoyable vacation WITHOUT having to be on the go to get the most out of our park ticket expenditure.

So... this morning, we decided to splurge a little on the final day. DD6 and DW headed off to the 9AM activity (painting wooden fish, and then trying to fish off the end of the pier) while I did the remaining laundry and started packing us up to check out.

Once we were all packed up, we got into our swim suits, loaded up the car and then headed back to the Big Dipper. We swam for about an hour and a half, and then had lunch at Tide Me Over - I had a really good burger, the girls loved their grilled cheese in the plastic buckets, and the made a special salad with grilled chicken instead of fried chicken for DW.

1PM was a seminar with a naturalist about Dolphins: Fact or Fiction. Grace had a great time trying to guess the right answers, but she really does learn a lot from these sessions, even at age 6.

After that seminar, we rode our bikes around the resort until it was time to go to our surprise finale to the trip (surprise for the girls at least) - a Dolphin Tour. It was pretty expensive, but was really worth it. Captain Ryan was great - very good with the girls - naming them his First Mate and co-pilot - giving us lots of background on the islands, Broad Creek, the sound, and dolphins. We had great luck and saw about a dozen dolphins altogether.

The trip back through the sound was very choppy and ALL of us, including captain Ryan got SOAKED by the spray. The girls thought it was hilarious and DW and I could really do nothing but laugh as well.

Grace said seeing the dolphins was a "dream come true" and that made the expense all worth it.

Once we got back to our car, at about 5:15, the plan was for an easy 3 hour drive (with a stop for dinner somewhere) to a hotel in Florence, SC. That would leave us with about 8.5 hours to get home tomorrow.

Two problems occurred that delayed us so much that it's now 11PM when I'm finally getting to do this final installment of this trip report.

1) When we got to our car (which we had parked under the Live Oak Lodge so it wouldn't sit in the sun all day) we found that our battery had died - there must have been a door left ajar somewhere during the day. I walked up to the front desk, and about 20 minutes later, one of the maintenance men from the resort came up in his club car, carrying one of those battery powered booter packs - one quick jump, and everything was fine from then on.

2) About midway between HHI and Florence, traffic on I-95 came to a dead stop.We sat for several minutes, and then began to crawl... eventually stopping again for another few mintues and then proceeding about about 30 mph for about 12 miles. We were wondering what the problem was, until we finally saw the burned out hulk of a large (probably about 40 foot long) motorhome by the side of the road. It looked like there had been a fire that started in the engine compartment. We lost about half an hour there, but I can only pray that no one was seriously injured in that fire.

So here we are - part way home, exhausted and missing HHI already. It was 8 years between visits to HHI for us, but you can bet it won't be that long again.

For those of you who've read all of this, I hope you've enjoyed it. It really started out to just be a room report - and morphed almost by itself into a trip report.

Once I'm home, I will supplement with Photos.

For now, I'm heading off to bed - got a long day of driving ahead of me tomorrow.

Ted, thanks so much for taking the time from your trip to post your report. It was terrific. We just found out we passed ROFR on HHI. You have reminded us of why we love it there! I'm glad you and your family had such a great time! Travel safe!

Thanks so much for your trip report. We had a fantastic trip last month and can not wait until next year when we go again. It is such a great vacation. Hope your drive runs smooth! We are from Bucks Co.!

Sounds like you had a great trip!!!!!! The dolphin cruise sounds really awesome. :thumbsup2

We really enjoyed our visit to HHI last Spring Break - my only wish is that the area had more dependably warm weather in April.

BTW - for those of you that are HHI regulars, we ran into the CM that used to be in charge of recreation @ HHI and she is now a member of the Dream Team at WDW! Pretty cool!

Thanks for the awesome reports! I'm counting down until our HHI visit. Can't wait. Hope you had a good rest of the drive back home here to PA. Looking forward to pictures too! Two more question...did the resort have life vests for the kids at the pool like the WDW resorts and how much should I plan to spend for the dolphin tour? Thanks again for all the info
Carla

Thanks so much for the report, I really enjoyed it!
Where did you stay in Florence?
We're driving down next month and will be stopping there for the evening.

Hey Vick,
Our friends stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Florence, SC on the way to HH. We did the overnight thing and went straight thru. They have stayed there the past 2 years and liked it. Close to 95 and lots of places to eat.

No more Lumberton Fairfield Inn? I think of you when we drove through there. :)
