I recently bought a Little Mermaid dvd for my dd from Half.com only to find out it was bootleg and it didn't even work. The seller refunded my money, but now I am wondering how to find a real Disney Little Mermaid DVD.

I know to look for the Disney hollogram when its in my hand, but how can you tell these fakes online?

How do I know if the Little Mermaid even came out on Disney DVD? Is there a website that will tell me?

Sorry, I know this isn't the exact forum, but this disboards are great. I thought someone here might know.

Thanks!

That is such a shame! At least you got your money back though...I had been looking for Cinderella a while back since my VCR had eaten it!...anyway...I looked all over and found when it said New in Package that it was a pretty good bet that it was what it said...also I think the guy I purchased from owned a video store.

Good luck! I hope you find someone honest to do business with!

From Amazon.com's reviews:

Hey, well as most of you all know this movie is unavailable for us for a couple more years. After doing some search on the net I found out it's re-release date on dvd (Subject to change)
Turns out That the 9 "Limited Issue" Disney DVD'S were not that succesfull at all so they are all getting a second chance: three already did; Pinnochio, Mulan & Hercules Got the "Gold Collection" treatment Peter Pan got the "Special Edtition" and the rest of the thoese most sought after disney dvd's will get the "Platinum Edition" treatment: The Platinum Edition Disney DVD's Will be released every Fall of every year Some are roumored to be re-released in theatres too!
2001: Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs (DVD Out of Print 1/31/02)
2002: Beauty and the Beast (DVD Out of Print 1/31/2003)
2003: The Lion King
2004: Aladdin
2005: Bambi
2006: The Jungle Book ("Maybe", it is said that this year there will not be a release from the platinum edition vault)
2007: Cinderella
2008: The little Mermaid
2009: Ldy and the Tramp
2010: 101 Dalmatians
There is no word on the Lion King II But who cares about Disney sequels?!
I recently bought The Little Mermaid on DVD on the eBay website for the ridiculous price of 70 dollars if you are so desperate and can't wait till 2008 get it there but make sure you don't get a boot or import there are alot of them running around!

When I was a cm at TDS a couple of years ago, they had a special promotion where if you pre-ordered a specific dvd (and I can't remember what it was) you got a free one and The Little Mermaid was one of the choices....... I believe that was the only time it was offered on DVD.... until they decide to release it a few years down the road!

We bought it on DVD in 98 when Disney first started to release animated movies on DVD. We have the original 9 movies and they are all limited editions. Mulan Pinochio Little Mermaid Lion King 2 Lady and the Tramp Jungle book 101 Dalmations Peter Pan and Hercules. They were all released in about a 12 month span starting in 98.

According the The Internet Movie Database, The Little Mermaid was released in the US on DVD on December 7, 1999 and went on moratorium on February 7, 2000. Talk about a limited release.

TWO MONTHS?? No wonder I thought it was only released as the freebie.... That must be the shortest release ever!

Yep each movie was released for a very limited time about 2 months and only in supplies of limited quantities at each store like 50 or 100 per store here in Canada. I pre ordered all of ours and have all 9 of the original release movies on DVD people were PO'd because none of the original 9 had any special features etc on them I really don't buy movies for the specail features I buy them for the actual movie.

Check the used music stores in your area. The ones here have DVDs(new and used) and they sometimes have some Disney movies:D

We looked to see if we could find some to buy to have extras but no one here has any good luck on your search. I remember spending 350 dollars to buy my wife an original unopened Beauty and the Beast VHS copy. She opened it on christmas day and we watched it about 10 minutes later.

Wow we only paid 19.99 Canadian for ours when we bought them at release time.

If you sign up with NetFlix, you can rent it and not return it. Then you just go to the site and purchase the DVD you do not want to return for $20. You won't get the case and all that with it, but you will have an original DVD.
