I don't know if this really belongs on the budget board or not. We saved money making it ourselves, so I guess it does belong here. I say we because DH helped me tremendously with this. Part of the cake is not cake (ala Duff from Ace of Cakes). DH built the entire inner frame work so what was cake (the top half) would stay together. He also spent what seemed like hours kneading the coloring into the fondant. We were quite happy with the results:

Here is view of the Rocket Cake:

Here is the Rocket Cake compared to the Pat Pat Rocket that we modeled it off of:

This was definitely a labor of love. It took countless hours, two tries and tons of fondant. We never even ended up eating any of it at the party because we had so much for DD9 (we celebrated her bday at the same time as their bdays are only one day apart). A couple of days later, I did eat a piece or two as I had it refrigerated.

We were celebrating the party at my moms since we live 5 hours away from all of our family. I ended up throwing it away :sad1: If there was some way to save it, I would have.

Anyway, thanks for looking!

CONGRATS!!!! That cake looks really good, but did you end up saving $$ or was the fondant a budget killer? I make my the cakes for our family but I have not ventured out to the fondant yet so I am not sure on the pricing but I do agree home made cakes even from a box/mix are usually better than store/bakery bought for the exception of the one or two signature cakes from our favorite bakery.

I use marshmallow fondant, a recipe I found on the Wilton boards. It's very simple, yet messy in the beginning, and very cheap. It took about three batches of fondant for the cake. All it takes is Marshmallows, powered sugar, and a few drops of water. It takes awhile to knead it, but it is so worth it. The Marshmallow fondant actually tastes good. If you want the recipe, let me know.

I agree about the box cakes. Even though they usually taste better than store bought cakes, I've started making my own cakes. This cake had homemade chocolate - moist, dense, and delicious. For my DDs cake, I had a two tier, the bottom one homemade vanilla cake and the top boxed chocolate. I ran out of cocoa so I used a boxed cake on it. I really have never noticed the difference until I tasted the 2 chocolates side by side. The homemade one, while not as fluffy, tasted much better.

That is really awesome, could you pm me the recipe? I personally don't like the taste of fondant so that is why I have not ventured into working with it. I would love to try out the recipe for this fondant you used. Thanks in advanced.

Look fabulous!!

I will second the marshmallow fondant recipe. It is pretty tasty (kind of tastes like those circus peanuts candies).

Oooooh!

Would you post the recipe and maybe a tutorial? Thanks if you can.

That cake is FANTASTIC! My 2 y.o. DD is obsessed with Little Einsteins. Can you order a Rocket cake from a bakery? I am nowhere near as crafty as you are, but my DD would love a Rocket cake!! Also, where did you buy the Einsteins tablecloth, napkins, etc.?

I also do the Marshmallow Fondant (MMF)

Super cheap and more tasty than reg fondant!

My 2 cents: add the color to the marshmallows after melting> this only works where you are making the whole batch that color. Stirs in very nice then!

I have also noticed the MMF can not take as many re-dos as reg. fondant. But as you get more use to it, it is really nice to work with!

The cake looks great, NICE JOB:thumbsup2

DS would LOVE that cake! Unfortunately I'm not talented in the baking area AT ALL!!! You did a fantastic job! :thumbsup2

:worship: Wow that is amazing. We did a Little Einstein's party for Joseph this past December (just before all the party items came out). Your cake rocks. :worship:

Your son will never, never, never forget that cake.

You did an amazing job on it!

Hi there, I was looking online for a tutorial on making the rocket cake and I came across your cake--WOW!! I joined this site specifically to ask you for the tutorial-I'd love to make it for my sons 4th birthday! Nice job,n:cheer2: and thanks in advance!

Your cake is amazing! I so wish I had the talent and patience for that! :goodvibes Wonderful job!

Great job!!!

My oldest DD had a Little Einstein birthday party for her 1st birthday. Our cake was definitely not as cool looking as yours but everyone thought it was cute!

I love the cakes!

Seeing them takes me back to my childhood. Everyone made cakes back then (none of the store bought nonsense). Mom made me a smurfette, strawberry shortcake...and something else. Scooby-Doo I think. If I had the wrist power I would be all over the homemade cake scene. I love Ace Of Cakes :thumbsup2.
