Little Einstein Rocket Cake

Wow you and your hubby do a great job!:cheer2::cheer2:

I would have cried if I had to throw it away though... Just a tip...

Cake wrapped in fondant can be frozen very well. Just put it in until it firms up, wrap in saran loosely - if freezing for a bit longer than 1 or 2 days put the loose wrapped cake in a box and wrap the box. When you pull it out unwrap it and let it come to room temp. It will sweat like the dickens but don't touch the fondant. A fan could be put on it to help it go quicker.

It will be just as moist as the day you stuck it in there - one of the beautiful side effects of fondant. It seals in all of the moisture.

Once again, great job and a tutorial would be fun! Or a pic of the stand would be worth a lot of someone who wants to make one.

Both cakes are great! wish I had the patience for that!

Not only is a beautiful cake, but it sounds like it was made with lots of love. The stories of the things my parents did for me when I was younger mean a lot to me today and often make me tear up. Don't forget to share this with your son one day when he is older and will appreciate it even more.

Thanks everyone! I can't believe this thread surfaced after a year +!

Hi there, I was looking online for a tutorial on making the rocket cake and I came across your cake--WOW!! I joined this site specifically to ask you for the tutorial-I'd love to make it for my sons 4th birthday! Nice job,n:cheer2: and thanks in advance!

Wow, it's been awhile so let me see if I can recall all the steps! Only the top portion of the cake (bottom of the windows & up) is actually cake. The gray portion and the part right above is actually just styrofoam covered in fondant. I was afraid that because of the odd shape that it wouldn't hold up if the entire thing was cake. Anyway, I carved them out to make them the right shape. On the gray part, I attached a wheel base and wheels that DH made for me using wooden wheels. I covered the gray portion in fondant, covering the wheel base as well. Then, i covered the middle portion (the bottom of the red - also styrofoam) in red fondant. Then, the real cake! I used sheet cakes and carved them out to the right shape and then covered that in red fondant as well. I made windows for with teal fondant. The rocket boasters (or whatever they are) are hotdog buns with cardboard fins. Yep, you guessed it, covered in red fondant. The little antennae (or whatever it is) on Rocket's head is a piece of dowel rod and then molded with fondant to look like the antennae and stuck in the top. Headlights are molded with fondant. I took a piece of cardboard and covered in green fondant then used the little characters from Pat Pat Rocket as accents.

I used homemade buttercream (YUM!) underneath all the fondant so it would adhere.

Okay, I sure hope it makes since :goodvibes. I'm not a cake decorator - I just do it for my kids.

While we're on the subject of cakes, I guess I'll include a cake from this year's bday since it is Disney! DD turned 10 and DS turned 3, just one day apart. DD said she was a bit old for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, but since she loves Disney and her brother so much, she agreed on the theme for the joint bday party. Plus, she's a closet MMCH fan :)

I know the little balls of fondant are too big between the two layers but I accidentally trimmed the fondant too short and had to cover the gap.

Anyway, thanks again for looking:)

Great job!!!

My oldest DD had a Little Einstein birthday party for her 1st birthday. Our cake was definitely not as cool looking as yours but everyone thought it was cute!

You did a great job too! I just love homemade cakes :goodvibes

Thanks for the tip! We always have too much cake left because I tend to overdo it. I hate running out of cake or having to offer tiny pieces of cake. I'll have to give it a try next time.

As far as the stand, I didn't keep it :( Hopefully the info I just posted will help someone out.

Our kids must have similar taste! First Little Einstein and now Mickey mouse (or minnie in my case). We are doing a Minnie Mouse theme for my daughter's 1st birthday next month. I am working on my 2nd trial cake this weekend.
