anyone heard of liquids getting tossed out of luggage that was checked? I know you cant carry on anything bigger than 3oz, but there isnt a limit for checking, right? My mom's co-worker is claiming she just got all of her liquids tossed out and I am saying she had to have been trying to carry them on. any thoughts?

Well, anything is possible and all kinds of things go missing from checked luggage on occasion, but generally liquids of any size are OK to check. You can't check high-proof alcohol or other flammable liquids, but generally it's not an issue. See the TSA list of prohibited items here and check your airline for their rules regarding checked bags.

Bottom line is that it is possible that an individual had liquids from their checked bags go missing, but that in general you should not have a problem.

I'm confused. First you said these were in checked baggage, now they were in carry-on. Which was it? If they were removed from her carry-on, I can't imagine why unless she was carrying prohibited items. She should have found a TSA card in her bag if it was opened by TSA. As for carry-on, her items would have been confiscated if they were over sized or also prohibited items.

If you are referring to liquids as your go trhough airport secuirty, they should not be tossed if 3 oz. or less. Just take them out of your CARRY-ON. Your CHECKED baggage (that goes in the cargo bin of the plane) can have lqiuids greater than 3 ozs, as long as the liquid is not hazardous.

sorry for the confusion. When i wrote the post, i didnt know whether she had tried to carry them on or not, and wanted to know if anyone had heard of things being confiscated from a checked bag. I have since found out she did try to carry them on, which explains why she lost them!

FTR, there ARE liquid restrictions on checked baggage. These are mandated by the FAA, not the TSA, and pre-date the TSA "liquids ban". The reason for the FAA rules re: checked baggage have nothing to do with potential terrorism; they exist because of ordinary fire risk, as all of the prohibited liquids are flammable (see the crash of ValuJet 592 for an example of how disastrous a fire in the hold can be.)

The list is on the TSA website, here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Most of the substances that cannot go in checked baggage are near the bottom of the list. Among the items that are not allowed are Lysol spray and spray starch -- the aerosol exceptions are only for toiletries, which are defined as substances designed to be applied to the human body.

Most people never hit the limit, but there is apparently a limit on aerosol toiletries in terms of quantity. However, it is a pretty high limit; I routinely take 14 6-oz cans of aerosol sunscreen on domestic beach trips, and I've never triggered it. I think it is somewhere around a gallon per bag: 128 oz.

One trip I brought back a bottle of wine and some wine glasses for a coworker who had babysat my dog all week. When I got home the bottle of wine and one shoe was missing from my bag.:rotfl: There was not a TSA card in the bag showing it had been searched. I had to explain to my coworker why she was getting wine glasses, but no Italian wine, which was the one thing she wanted.:rotfl:

Not to pick to fine a nit . . . TSA claims they do not "confiscate" anything. Rather, a passenger has the choice of "voluntarily surrendering" items or not flying. :rotfl2: Big whoop, eh?
