Liquids on Flights

Liquids and gels are usually labeled in fluid ounces. Nobody buys two pound of milk; they buy a quart of milk.

Ahhh.....but toothpaste is measured in ounces by weight. I can fit 4 weight ounces of toothpaste into a 1 fluid (volume) ounce container. I know that they aren't weighing items and that they are truly going by volume but they need to say "3 fluid ounce" container if that's what they mean. Or can I bring a 3 ounce (by weight) tube of toothpaste even if it's bigger than a 3 fluid ounce container?

I'm sorry, but you are way overthinking this.

My toothpaste is in ml; American toothpaste is in ounces. Read the package and buy the small travel size tube. Even a medium size tube is only 1oz or so

you can't take a half full 6oz container and claim that its 3oz, by the way.

All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller

We just flew and were told all liquid items needed to be in ONE quart size bag, and whatever didn't fit, had to be tossed, this was at Detroit and when we flew back from Vegas and Dallas as well.
I think its funny though in looking at the TSA list on their site, that it is ok to bring scissors with blades less than 4 inches and tools such as screwdrivers UNDER 7 inches and other tools less than 7 inches in length on the plane..I'm sorry, am I the only one who finds that a bit weird?
I know why they limit the liquids but um.....4 inch blades, 7 inch tools? does noone else find this a bad idea?

yes, all liquids do need to be in one quart size bag, as Horace pointed out.

Yes I know that, I was telling you because I just flew and someone asked, so thought I would give first hand experience. My question is can you tell me why such long bladed items are ok??? I think the system is a wee-bit messed up.

The risks have changed.

A cockpit takeover (like those of September 11) is now very unlikely. Cockpit doors are locked and reinforced. More importantly, any terrorist who tries to use small tools or blades will be stopped by passengers who are now very aware of what happened on September 11.

On the other hand, liquids are deemed to be a much greater threat. Nobody thinks that anyone will perform a terrorist act with a bottle of mouthwash. However, containers could be refilled with other liquids that could be lethal in various ways. By limiting the size and quantity of containers, and by inspecting them more closely, that threat is reduced.

In August 2006, the press reported that a terrorist plot involving liquids had been foiled. There have been debates about whether that particular scenario, which involved combining different liquids aboard the aircraft, could ever have been carried out. But that really isn't the issue. The TSA in the US and its counterparts in other countries no longer want passengers to have the ability to bring on many liters of liquids each, as was previously allowed (even after September 11).

I disagree, to rely solely on passengers to save the day is not good logic. Also, what about the flight attendants?
The 2 flights I was on? The crew came out into first class 3 times to talk with us, so they aren't all locked up in there like they used to be.
I think they should ban all things sharp, it's too great a risk. Why let our guard down?
There should be a ban on all tools and anything sharp, just my opinion.

Can I use a small baby lotion bottle, but put sunscreen in it instead? We are using Magical Express and won't have access to our luggage for quite sometime and my DS will definately need it at 14 months old.

your opinion, not the safety experts who made that determination. and the rule varies - CATSA does not allow any scissors on flights in and departing Canada.

I fly in first much of the year, and whenever a member of the cockpit crew needs to use the restroom, the gangway is barred by a cart and two cabin crew.

Air marshals are in existence on many flights.

There is security invisible to your eye.

If you don't agree then don't fly. The rules won't change just because you don't think that they are right.

so long as the bottle is marked under 3oz. Why not just use wipes or get a bottle when you land or buy a travel size bottle.

Wow this is a hostile thread, I can't offer how I feel, without being told, if I don't like it, don't fly.
I'm a travel agent and because of me, I help keep people employed in the travel business.
How rude, sorry I spoke up. Seems some people here think they are all knowing and control the thread.
Wow, I'm laughing because alot of people who DO fly agree with me that it's a huge false sense of security we have, this opinion is not just mine.
Sorry I talked on your thread, I will go back to the ones I usually write on, where people are nice.
Hope you find something to smile about, sounds like someone needs a hug!! lol :grouphug:

Sharp blades are still prohibited. There is still a long list of prohibited items.

But the TSA folks are no longer confiscating eyeglass repair kits, children's safety scissors, small hand tools (without points or sharp edges), and similar items. Do you remember right after September 11, when passengers routinely had their fingernail clippers (with those little, tiny nail files) confiscated?

as you can see, opinions and anecdotes and rumours only serve to confuse infrequent flyers.

I've said it many times - there is no room for pixie dust and wishes when it comes to this area of transportation - only facts help the travellers who ask for help.

Someone comes along and posts their experience, which may in turn lead someone else to think that they can bring multiple baggies etc.

Sorry if you don't like the facts being stated here, but many of use reserve the pixie dust for other topics.

And when the crew members did come out, NOONE blocked the doorway and there was no cart put in front of it, so your statement isn't true for all airlines.
Still find your comment amusing and rude at the same time.
I would much rather drive than fly, it's alot more fun but time-wise sometimes I have to fly. Just was saying they should ban all tools and sharp items, this is a FORUM and all points of view are supposed to be welcome, didn't know this thread had a spokesperson.
Sorry , enjoy your morning!

OMG I though I was so covered and then I just read the zip top part. Does that mean it can not be zip-loc? Does it have to have that pink zipper thing or can it be the kind you just push together? I am so broke and I really don't want to go buy new baggies!

I've never flown with the zip type (pink) - mine are the old fashioned do it yourself type baggie.

Now, there is conflicting anecdotal evidence from flyers that some TSA agents want a pink zip top with no writing at all (ie not even 'ziploc') but I haven't seen that be an issue in all the times I have flown since last August.

The TSA site says 'zip top' ie not pink zipper top; many airports also give out baggies and they don't have a pink zipper.

I think that you will be fine!

tiggergirlinMI,

I don't think anyone was rude to you. You were questioning the security rules. Bavaria and I tried to provide accurate, factual information.

Some people think the rules are too strict and are only there to make us feel safer, without actually contributing to any real safety. Apparently you feel that the rules are too lenient because they allow such things as pliers that are less than 7 inches and blunt-tip scissors. In the end, however, those are just opinions.

Those of us who fly have to live with the security rules. (Again, the rules still prohibit knives, box cutters, tire irons, baseball bats, and all sorts of other things that could be used as a dangerous weapon.) Our only other choice is to choose another form of transportation.

They don't make the kind we use in travel size or wipes. I am also not willing to chance that they don't have it there when we land. We are using magical express, so no chance for a pit stop at a store.

If it's labeled in ml, the limit is 100ml.
