Like to read, bored w/the usual, need recommendations....

I like Jeff Abbott, James W. Hall and Jilliane Hoffman for suspense. G.A. McKevett has a good series of mystery books with an interesting main character. I've read two Nora Roberts books and couldn't get into them.

If you like the psychological suspense thrillers, then try the earlier books by Greg Iles. Some of his later books are just okay, and actually, his latest book "The Devil's Punchbowl" was better. But really, his earlier ones like Dead Sleep are fantastic. There is also one character, Penn Cage, the is each story so it's best to start at the beginning.

I am also enjoying Stephen King's Under the Dome. I haven't like his stuff in YEARS but this one is okay.

Child 44, as another poster mentioned, is also good.

wow. some great suggestions and authors & books I've never head of or seen. i'll be heading to the library tomorrow. thanks. i had forgotten about lisa gardner, iris johansen and david baldacci....read all those and liked too. never been able to get in stephen king, but may have to try again. i'm making my list for tomorrow. thanks again! :thumbsup2

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have a series of books that are excellent - particularly 'Cabinet of Curiosities' and 'Still Life With Crows' (they can be a bit gory, though).

I second this recommendation. I would strongly suggest reading all of the Pendergast novels (starting with "The Relic" and including "Cabinet of Curiosities" and "Still Life With Crows") in order. I think they could get very confusing otherwise. They also have some other books which are quite good and are not part of the Pendergast books, and each author has his own books that are very good. I think Disney fans in particular would especially enjoy "Utopia" by Lincoln Child.

I love Jonathan & Faye Kellerman....they both work in the mystery genre. Jonathan is a child psychologist who brings that experience into his writing. Faye brings Jewish religion traditions into her writing (but not too much).

Jennifer Crusie is my favorite fluff writer but I have others in the fluff genre that I love too. :rotfl:

Karen Kingsbury
Colleen Coble
Gayle Roper
Denise Hunter
Jodi Picoult
Elizabeth Berg
Barbara Delinsky

And if you're at all interested in Amish fiction, I could give you a list a mile long..:rotfl:

:santa:

I just came across a book I loved and had forgotten about. Pillars of the Earth.I forget the author. I was a little leery of starting it because it's about 1000 pages long but once I did, I loved it!

Ken Follet.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

The Help by Catherine Stockett

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

OMG those are three of my favorites!!!

Other good, a little offbeat, books are

The House at Riverton
Thirteenth Tale

Also, try John LesCroart, but start early in his life. What about Perry O'Shaughenessy (sp).

Based on your favorites, two MUST reads for you are The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (I didn't think I'd like it, but I loved it), and anything by Michael Connelly. Try The Poet. One of the best ever.

Michael Connely is really great! Especially if you like James Patterson! How about John Sanford?? Also another rec for Greg Isles. Umm, Lee Child is really great, Kathy Riechs, (she writes the books that Bones is based on). Anonther rec for Jonathon and Faye Kellerman. Stephen White is also pretty good.

I love to read! I used to read about 3 -4 book a week, but since I have had my son it is down to about 1- 2 books a week. Last year I cleaned out my bookshelves and donated over a 1,000 books to the libary!

Wow! Thanks for mentioning this. I read "The Relic" a long time ago but loved it. I'll have to check those out- I didn't know it was kind of a series. I did read "The Cemetary Dance" this summer, though- it was only okay.

Pillars of the Earth and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are among my favorite books. I read Pillars years ago and re-read it recently. It is still a fabulous read. Don't let the size of the book daunt you. You will wish it never ends!

I just finished Case Histories by Kate Atkinson and really liked it. I also loved Child 44, mentioned previously.

I enjoyed Mistress in the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It's kind of like Pillars of the Earth meets CSI.

Something really different? I liked The Book Thief (advertised for young adults, but I found it plenty mature enough)! Also, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Andrew Gross has written a couple good books on his own (without putting James Patterson's name on the book.)

Looks like we have the same taste with the exception of Case Histories. That was just "meh"for me. I had forgotten "Mistress in the Art of Death", I really did like that. The Book Thief as well!! I havent read The Namesake but I should, I guess?

Just wanted to say thanks for the great recommendations. I am ready the 100th man right now by JA Kerley and I love it (I lived in Daphne, AL for several years, so it's cool to read a book based there). I also picked up the next one in this series and then 2 by Tess Gerristen.

Happy reading to me! :goodvibes

Extreme Measures by Vince Flynn.

I was going to recommend Vince Flynn, but start at the beginning of the series. The Vince Flynn books are good, easy read, not all that well written but a good storyline. I also like the Dan Brown books. If you haven't read Tom Clancy, I really enjoy his books--especially since they are long and give me a few weeks worth of reading if I read the series (I like to read the series in chronological order, not published order).

I know you said you aren't interested in Harry Potter but I do think they are worth reading. The first book takes about 5-6 chapters to really get going but after that they are very entertaining.
