Now this actually sounds good in a weird sort of way, :goodvibes but I would think twice about letting Maroo near a hot tub. At least one you want to get in. She seems to have the uncanny ability to get them closed down.:confused3

Yes, I"ve addressed this issue. What is up with that?? Maybe we should get massages instead??:rolleyes1

Just caught up on your thread and now I am starving. Look out kitchen here I come.

What did funnel cakes do for ya??

Okay, I promised I would show you "Snack of Choice #4" today. I am doing this one now, so you all don't think I'm some sort of over-the-top health food freak who can't have fun! It is so not true! I love an artery clogging, heart stopping, flab producing concoction just as much as any red-blooded American. So, I give you-------------Funnel Cakes!

First get about 3 cups of vegetable oil heating in a heavy pot on the stove over a medium high flame.

Then, in a mixing bowl, mix up the following batter.

4 cups flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2-1/2 cups milk
3 large eggs
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

I cut the recipe in half. Half makes 4 pretty big funnel cakes- enough to feed the kids and I an afternoon snack. It should be like fairly runny pancake batter like this:

To make it a relatively easy, mess free job, pour the batter into a ziplock bag.

Then, with a pair of scissors, cut a pretty small hole in the corner of the bag at the bottom.

From the bag, squeeze the batter into hot cooking oil The oil needs to be very hot, test it by dropping ONE drop of water into it. If it pops and immediately spatters, your oil is ready. If your oil is not hot enough, your funnel cakes will be greasy!

Fry in the oil for about 45 secs. to 1 minute, or until the cake looks brown on one side, like this:

With metal spatula, flip in in one big piece to the other side and fry for a minute more (or less if it's browning quickly). After you remove it to a plate, sprinkle it liberally with powdered sugar.

Enjoy!!

Okay seriously. I was SO going to start eating healthy today. I went for a walk this morning, I've had Cheerios for breakfast, I'm being a good girl.

And then you posted this.

And I'm so making these for lunch.

OMG. I heart you. So, so much.

I'll get started on the list I keep getting popcorned on right now! :goodvibes

(See, Maroo, all it takes is a oh so bad oh so good recipe to light my fire.)

The Many Time Aforementioned List For Which I Keep Getting Popcorned

On a Thread That's Not Even Mine

(But Which I Heartily Enjoy)

Let's start with the Magic Kingdom, shall we?

Dole Whip - Maroo, I know you're not fond of it, but if you get the pineapple one that counts as a fruit which according to Liesa does double time as a vegetable. Now if you got pineapple Dole Whip as a float, that would really be like two fruits, which would then fufill a two vegetable requirement.

Egg Rolls - If the wagon is open, you could stop by and get a vegetable egg roll. Heck, you could even get one with meat in it and it would still have vegetables. Surely that would count as at least one if not two.

Main Street Bakery - Quite frankly there are several options here. Carrot cake. Banana nut bread. Cherry danish. The possibilities are endless. So easy to fufill the requirements, really.

Ice Cream Carts - Now who can forget the frozen bananas already discussed. I also know certain ones have a strawberry fruit bar, so there you go.

These are just a few of the stunning options you have available to you to fufill the requirement. Without getting into actual restaurants (since I'm not sure what you're planning), we can already see if a fruit is a veg, it will be easy for Maroo to fufill the veggie requirement.
Moving on.

Epcot-

I note that Sunshine Seasons, in the land has several dessert options, including an Apple Caramel Cake, which would surely suffice.

Now, Maroo. Anything CS in Mexico is going to have lettuce and tomato on the plate. Problem? Solution. Two veggies, I say.

And let's not forget the margarita stand. Fruit flavored, people!

Boulangerie Pattisserie in France? See above mention of Magic Kingdom Bakery.

Liesa also mentioned the crepe stand, so we know about that.

Kaki Gori! Shaved ice in Japan. So nice on a hot day and topped with a fruit flavored syrup! (We're going to willfully ignore that it's most likely artificial flavoring.)

Norway - School Bread. It's got coconut. I'm calling it a fruit, which is therefore a vegetable.

Hmm...what else can I come up with here... :scratchin

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

How about this?

Did I say that?? A fruit counting as double for veggies?? THIS I gotta go back and check! I may make an exception for Dole Whips which are on my short list of MUST haves. I don't HAVE to have a funnel cake, but since I was making them anyway, and I got totally jyped at Dollywood last year, I thought I'd put it here; who knows I may end up with one next year.

Egg Rolls - If the wagon is open, you could stop by and get a vegetable egg roll. Heck, you could even get one with meat in it and it would still have vegetables. Surely that would count as at least one if not two.

I like these! But if I do one, it'll be at AK.

Main Street Bakery - Quite frankly there are several options here. Carrot cake. Banana nut bread. Cherry danish. The possibilities are endless. So easy to fufill the requirements, really.

Probably won't stop here- but I'll share one with you in a few days that is similar...

Ice Cream Carts - Now who can forget the frozen bananas already discussed. I also know certain ones have a strawberry fruit bar, so there you go.

I'll save commenting on this one for later....

I can say this isn't on my list, but I do make it at home quite often.

Now, Maroo. Anything CS in Mexico is going to have lettuce and tomato on the plate. Problem? Solution. Two veggies, I say.

Hmmm... this is a solution I can live with.

And let's not forget the margarita stand. Fruit flavored, people!

That's what I'm talking about! Good thing Disney has transportation. Don't get me wrong, I won't overdo it, but I do like a sweet something once in a while. And you can ask Mary, I do like a good glass of wine with my dinner.

Everyone raves, but for me, it just doesn't tempt.

No, no. I misspoke. I meant that one fruit equals one veg. It's like the fruit is serving double duty as a fruit and a vegetable.

Hmmm... this is a solution I can live with.

Maroo! Did you hear that? By virtue of your agreeing with this simple accord, a cheeseburger could easily be concerned fufilling of the vegetable catergory, since in fact, it also has lettuce and tomato on it. I'm sure this theory could be applied to many many sandwiches.

That's what I'm talking about! Good thing Disney has transportation. Don't get me wrong, I won't overdo it, but I do like a sweet something once in a while. And you can ask Mary, I do like a good glass of wine with my dinner.

Hon. Wine = grapes = fruit = veg. I see a win-win situation here.

By the by, I am mega excited about making funnel cakes for lunch. :thumbsup2

My gosh...where to start, where to start??

I can go ahead and tell you there will be NO multiquoting each thing I want to say today...My replies will be in...BLUE. Suffice my mood today.

I think the real question is how much can we extort to have things like this on our TR? Not how much we can charge to have things taken out. maroo, stuff like this could pay for our whole trip!!!! :lmao:

Hmm.... :scratchin

Hey Jen,

Yes, word has it that maroo does NOT like Dole Whips. Yes, I am still trying to figure THAT out!! :confused3 They are so yummy, and they will be here on my MUST HAVE snack list. You'll have to suffice with others' pix.

It is true. I don't like Dole Whips. I don't like pineapple...:confused3

Gazpacho is tasty, but I doubt maroo will eat it. I'll save it for me. :cloud9: but maybe if we put whip cream on it??? :confused3

Whipped cream on VEGGIES? Gross. I would rather have the veggies! :)

Click away, my friend! I hope we haven't tainted your mind too much with our crazy and ever so silly, (and slightly off-color, I might add) banter.

Like I said, I think it can go both ways, $$ to have stuff omitted, AND $$ to have stuff POSTED! Hmmm... just think of the possibilities! :rotfl2:

As to your veggie counting system. I think TK, maroo, and Jen could all go for it. I'm sticking with my gazpacho, baby! Pongus for all!

I will make it for you someday. And since you said it...

No ketchup, mustard, mayo- I love ya, but okay, that's just weird. I adore when Johny Depp says that in Charlie (one of my fav. movies, by the way)

Yeah. My parents thought it was pretty strange, too. And we used to have wait at McD's FOREVER to get a "plain" hamburger. :confused3

As to reporting... that's a whole 'nother ball of wax. Since we are Soldiers fo the utmost integrity, we should report fully and truthfully---- right?? ;) Hot tub incidents included.

Of course! If the hot tub starts to drain with no apparent reason at the resort...feel free to blame it on me. ::yes::

By the way, we be needin' to talk about this. You've been hidin' hot tub dirt. Who remembers that movie (was it Caddy Shack) with the floating doody (aka Payday Bar)?? Oh wouldn't it be rich??

What hot tub dirt did I hold back on? I thought I pretty much let all the dirt go on here! ha ha

I don't think that cake has betacarotine or antioxidants though.

Gazpacho comin' right over! Look out Mary!

Wow. Maybe we should warn the UPS guy?

Yes, that's what I'm talking about! You guys pay US, WE'LL pay for our trip, Then we MIGHT put some ummm.. items of interest up next Sept. My father always told me to be careful what you ask for! You could get serious amounts of arm flab (which you're likely to get ayway :rotfl2:)

I meant before you came clean here for all of us. I think if hot tubs are a draining, I'm doing some running!

We also like it with apricot jam drizzled over it. That's fruit, right??

Enjoy!!

Ok.

YUM!

But... I have only one problem with this. Ok, two.

First...what is "medium flame!?!?!?" We live in the US, remember? Not in the sticks of some foreign country. I don't cook by a flame? :rotfl2:

Second...There are two times in my life where someone tried to fry something like that indoors.

Both times required a fire extinguisher. And some new paint for the kitchen.

The first time I was tutoring a young man and sitting at the kitchen table facing a large window. Behind us the father was attempting to make "real" french fries. He left the room and I had to yell for him when I could see the flames reflected in the window.

He is an electrician. A lineman. He works for the power company and had one of those cool power trucks in his driveway.

The first thing he did was get a huge bucket of water and try to put out the fire. :sad2: You don't put out a fire started by grease with water. We should all write that down. In our brains. Very important. It spreads the fire.

He can't find the fire extinguisher in his house, so he runs outside to his truck, comes back in and puts the fire out. LOTS of damage to the kitchen. For french fries.

Go to McDonald's, people!

The second "frying" incident occured at the first home I ever rented...out on my own...you know...that first place you call home outside of college. :cloud9: My roommate decided to "make" donuts. Same basic story, but this old house had old flammable paint. The whole side of the kitchen went up in flames. But being the very smart person I now was (thanks to incident number one), I used a fire extinguisher the first time and put the fire out.

We had a lot of painting to do. And again...go buy donuts, people! Krispy Kreme. Shipleys. Donut Hole. Wherever it is in your world that makes donuts...go buy some.

But...funnel cakes. I can't buy funnel cakes except at the fair. Or Disney World. So...I suppose it would be fun to make some. I may try it. But not without a fire extinguisher.

This has been a Maroo public service announcement. Any future announcements will be preceeded by a very long, annoying BEEEEEEEEEEEPPPP followed by important information from your local, state or federal officials regarding an emergency. Appropriate instructions will follow. Now resuming normal programming.

Don't you love it!

I don't like egg rolls. I am going to starve.

Main Street Bakery - Quite frankly there are several options here. Carrot cake. Banana nut bread. Cherry danish. The possibilities are endless. So easy to fufill the requirements, really.

I could live here.

Ice Cream Carts - Now who can forget the frozen bananas already discussed. I also know certain ones have a strawberry fruit bar, so there you go.

Ah...I may come out of the bakery for this. ::yes::

These are just a few of the stunning options you have available to you to fufill the requirement. Without getting into actual restaurants (since I'm not sure what you're planning), we can already see if a fruit is a veg, it will be easy for Maroo to fufill the veggie requirement.

I actually LIKE lettuce and tomato on my hamburgers! So that should count as two! But if I get bacon, it is minus two. Back to zero.

And let's not forget the margarita stand. Fruit flavored, people!

Ha. :rotfl:

Boulangerie Pattisserie in France? See above mention of Magic Kingdom Bakery.

Liesa - put this on our list. I have never been there.

Liesa also mentioned the crepe stand, so we know about that.

Kaki Gori! Shaved ice in Japan. So nice on a hot day and topped with a fruit flavored syrup! (We're going to willfully ignore that it's most likely artificial flavoring.)

Yum! Banana shaved ice.

Norway - School Bread. It's got coconut. I'm calling it a fruit, which is therefore a vegetable.

Hmm...what else can I come up with here... :scratchin

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Ok...popcorn::

You are missing two whole parks?!?!?
popcorn:: popcorn:: popcorn:: :surfweb:

By the by, I am mega excited about making funnel cakes for lunch. :thumbsup2

That is great TK!

Please read the above public service announcement! :rotfl2:

What did funnel cakes do for ya??

I think I can smell them cooking. :rotfl: Funnel Cakes are one of DS and my favorite things. We always have to share at least one every trip.

Okay I need some way to save all these recipes easily. I copied and pasted the funnel cake one into a word document.

Donuts?? No problem! We make them all the time! For pennies!

We even make our own maple glaze for them :)

Fries? If we want those, we gotta make em. So, we do that once a week too.

The trick is to use a big heavy pot; and a medium flame is one that is HALFWAY between low and high. ;)

And, no, I think she meant gazpacho shaved ice. Even better! :lmao::lmao:

MinnieNurse...
Glad they float your boat! Good idea saving them! Maybe someday, I should write a Disney cookbook

maroo...
Let's keep our resort paint nice. Let's buy our fried goods- remember, my stove was one of my enemies.

Ok...popcorn::

You are missing two whole parks?!?!?

First of all, I'm not giving my whole list in one shot. Please. How will I entertain myself for the rest of the day? :rotfl:

Ah, yes. By practically burning down the house. Your PSA was too late for me, my friend. I've got photos coming up. Suffice it to see ye ole TK homestead was recently filled with smoke. I'm shocked that our alarm did not go off. :lmao: DS and I were both coughing.

But, I managed to make the funnel cakes.

You know the weird thing? I fry stuff all the time. I've made fried dough (Italian), done my own potato chips, french fries...except I sort of misread Liesa's directions on how high the heat should be.

I'm ashamed to say what my first batch came out like. Thank goodness I made the whole batch and didn't have the batter! :lmao:

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! :scared1: :scared1:

:furious:

Did you have a fire? Did you hurt anything? Are you guys ok? Oh no! You may need to get that alarm checked out. Maybe we saved your life!

Now you are going to get double popcorn....

LIST = popcorn:: popcorn:: :surfweb:

PICTURES of FIRE and FUNNEL CAKES = popcorn:: popcorn:: :surfweb:

And now I am hungry. Off to lunch.

You guys were chatty this morning!!! (I am doing a quick drive-by post so no multi-quotes just a few comments.)

FUNNEL CAKE! :lovestruc Now that is a snack!

Liesa - they look delicious! Mary - They have them at Hersheypark. TK - making funnel cake for lunch - bravo! Almost burning the house down - :scared1:! Can't wait to see the photos of the house and the funnel cake and to read the rest of your list!

Good snack list so far!
One of my faves that I didn't see - chocolate covered rice krispie treat mickey heads
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Dole Whips and Margaritas!

Mary - two things - I am thinking you might be dangerous to be around between house fires and closing down hot tubs! I may have to recind my invitation to hang out at my house.;) You also may need to rethink your stance on condiments - if tomato and lettuce on a burger counts as two veggies I would think that ketchup, onion and pickles count as three so in one nice little burger you get your five veggies for the day!

Yummy! We may just have to go to Hershey Park on Sunday! Rain or shine!!

I am about to ban myself from my own house! But note in my stories that I was not ever doing the cooking. ::yes:: So just don't fry anything or let me use your hot tub and we should be fine. :thumbsup2

And if I can't come, Muffin can't either! :snooty: J/K. Can't wait to meet you guys! :)

Mary you may need to rethink your stance on condiments - if tomato and lettuce on a burger counts as two veggies I would think that ketchup, onion and pickles count as three so in one nice little burger you get your five veggies for the day!

I have to eat 5 veggies a day? I thought it was four?

Not worth it.

I have to tell you what I ate for lunch...LOTS of broccoli! At least two servings worth. And some corn. And good for you chicken (you know, not fried, no skin, etc). You would be proud.

Mmmmmm funnel cake. Nothing like deep fried dough to make a fellow's mouth water.

And again...go buy donuts, people! Krispy Kreme. Shipleys.
Shipleys! There's one of those by our house. I'm a HUGE fan of their jalapeno kolaches. MMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMM GOOOD! Or as we say in Texas, that there's some dang good eatin. (Properly pronounced it's all one word of course. Dane-ga-deet-an.) Plus Jalapenos come from a plant, as does flour. Thus, it counts as two vegetable credits. Come to think of it, their cream cheese stuffed donuts are a might nifty as well.

popcorn:: popcorn::

That is ok, I am enjoying my popcorn. :snooty:

Is it Disney popcorn from Main Street USA? That's my favorite. Well, that and the cart in Liberty Square. And in Epcot. Oh, heck, it just tastes better there.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! :scared1: :scared1:

:furious:

Did you have a fire? Did you hurt anything? Are you guys ok? Oh no! You may need to get that alarm checked out. Maybe we saved your life!

No, no, no!!!! Don't worry, we are totally fine. I did not start a fire. I just had WAY too much smoke when I threw the first batch of dough into the too hot oil, it immediately created a huge cloud of smoke which then dissipated and hung in the apartment. I opened windows, turned all the fans on high. I'd say it took 20-30 minutes to get the smoke gone. Fortunately, I'd built a fort for DS in the living room, so he was able to hide under that and not breathe it like I was, as I walked around like an idiot, waving towels in the air.

Did maybe the medium "flame" throw you off? She didn't mention the flames that would be in your house. :confused3

Now you are going to get double popcorn....

And now I am hungry. Off to lunch.

It was the medium thing that threw me. Because usually for other items I've fried, I needed a higher heat, and so I made the assumption.

I know, however, have the benefit of knowing the absolute perfect setting for making funnel cakes on my stove is between 5 and 6! :thumbsup2

Okay, so I'm throwing in a disclaimer here.

If you are eating or drinking, stop. The following photo may be extremely offensive to the eyes and stomach.

And yes, you may laugh at me. I know my husband will when he gets home.

DSCI0374.jpg
- Nice runny dough and hot oil - not good. Make big smoke. Not good. :confused3

Yummy Funnel Cakes -

Yes, Ma, I can cook!

They did come out pretty nicely once I got the hang of it.

Just think how much easier it'll be next time.

If I'm allowed in the kitchen again. :rotfl2:

EDIT: WOW! Sorry the pics are so big. I'll try to resize those puppies.

Good snack list so far!
One of my faves that I didn't see - chocolate covered rice krispie treat mickey heads
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Dole Whips and Margaritas!

I think so. I have 5 or so more to go. I won't be getting all 9 I believe, so I'll have to rank them in the end.

THEN.... maroo, it's your turn. You can take a while to list out yours. ThePreachersWife has no clue of such things, so we'll have to let her discover that along the way for herself. One of those joys of discovery we'll let just happen as part of the magic for her.

Guys, can I just tell ya, I'm so excited to have her along as a WDW Newbie?? I so can't wait to see her face when she sees and experiences things for the first time.

I have to eat 5 veggies a day? I thought it was four?

Not worth it.

I have to tell you what I ate for lunch...LOTS of broccoli! At least two servings worth. And some corn. And good for you chicken (you know, not fried, no skin, etc). You would be proud.

What does WW say?? Is it 4 or 5?? And yes, it is worth it.

You arent' going to believe it!... but broccoli is the one that I reallly don't like unless it is smothered in cheese sauce or some other something to hide its nasty flavor. But I do eat it- just cuz I know it's good for me.

Mmmmmm funnel cake. Nothing like deep fried dough to make a fellow's mouth water.

Shipleys! There's one of those by our house. I'm a HUGE fan of their jalapeno kolaches. MMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMM GOOOD! Or as we say in Texas, that there's some dang good eatin. I adore ANYTHING with jalepenos in them. Those kolaches sound heavenly. I have to bring jalepenos (canned) with me every time I come back.

TK-

You DID do very well. Yes, your first batch looked like something out of Mordor, but you kept at it, and in the end had some mighty great looking funnel cakes. Did DH ever get to try them?? Did he laugh?? Did they taste good?? One of the secrets to cooking is knowing your own stove and what temps those little numbers really are! Good for you! Now you can have funnel cakes whenever you want, and you won't have to spend $5,000 to get them.

I have been missing for a while but i am slowly catching up on all my pre trippies. you guys are killing me it is almost 3 in the morning here and i am laughing so hard over your constitution that i am going to wake the whole house.
just to let you know my vote in the fruit/veggie category is grand marnier slushies (orange flavoring counts right?) yum yum.
maroo i have to say i am not a veggie lover at all, in fact i rarely go near them but zucchini is yummy, and hey you could always have fried green beans, fried eggplant. nobody said you had to eat them without deep frying them:rolleyes:

Oh, bless you. Lying to me like that. :lmao:

Yes, my initial attempt certianly does look like it came from Mordor! :lmao: I can't wait to to tell my DH that description.

They actually tasted quite good. I had two for lunch. DH and DS finished off the rest of it in the evening, and judging by the empty plates, I'd say they were pretty happy as well.

And yes, no matter where you are, it's all about learning the stove. I can see why it's one of your enemies. Yesterday, it became one of mine. And I'm so good and knowing the normal stuff! Scrambled eggs. 3. Browning ground meat. 4-5. Hot oil? YIKES!!!!
