Lightning Kills Giraffe At Animal Kingdom

It's very sad. The animal keepers at AK have had a tough few months, first they lost a baby elephant, now a giraffe.

I can't even imagine being one of the people to witness that...especially little kids. As an adult, I think that would tramatize me for quite some time. I'm sure the little ones are probably having nightmares about it...I know I would be.

I do have a picture taken in Oct 02 of the two that were there then, more than likely it is one of them.

When you hear thunder, even in the distance, you must think of it as a warning.

We also have a LOT of lightening (second only to Florida). Our TV weatherman says that if you can hear the thunder, you can be hit by the lightening. You can hear thunder 7 miles away, lightening can travel 7 miles.

That's too bad. I hope this won't happen again. Maybe they should have trees taller than the giraffe to avoid this???

I live in CT on the NY state line. Monday night there was a bad thunderstorm coming thru. I was at work watching it on the radar. the storm was in Poughkeepsie, NY (about 30 miles away) I could see the lighting from there and here the thunder. The storm just poped up on us we went from a nice calm night to downpour like you'd get in flordia. (we knew the storm was coming but normally you get light rain first not with this one) the article also said this is very common for girrafes.
