My sister began smoking again, and we are not allowed to bring lighters in luggage (carryon or checked). We leave today, and don't really have time to run out and buy a couple books of matches....so where, once we arrive, can she find a lighter? We arrive via DME, so won't have a way to get off property.

the resort gift shops carry them. I get one everytime I check in, just a cheap one, becasue I know I'll have to ditch when I go home.

I spoke to a lady who flew to WDW from the mid-west while having a smoke and she indicated that she had brought matches thinking that a lighter would be not allowed on the plane.

You can absolutely pack them in checked baggage is my understanding of the new rules.

I looked at the TSA list, and it said Lighters cannot be in checked or carryon bags, only up to 4 books of Safety Matches (not the Strike-Anywhere ones). I will look again though, make sure I wasn't looking at an old TSA list.

ok here is what the TSA site has:

Lighters - All lighters are prohibited as carry-on items. Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to DOT exemptions, which allow up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter is prohibited, please refrain from bringing it to the airport.

Carryon:No

Checked Baggage:No

Not sure what lighters without fuel are! So seems like checking lighters in your bags might be tricky. ??? Don't all lighters have fuel (otherwise, how would they light??)

i just came back from the bahamas on saturday and we just put the lighter in the luggage that we checked and found it wen we got to the bahamas and wen we arrived back home. We flew out of JFK in new york and then out of the airport on Nassau, bahamas...i dunnno if that helps ..but our lighter made it both ways.

I think they're talking about "collector's items" lighters, like the metal, flip-top re-fillable Zippo's and such. You have to put lighter fluid in them and they do run dry and won't light.

While I don't think anyone cares if a $1 plastic lighter gets confiscated, but it's a little different if they confiscate one made of gold, or that had sentimental value.

Hopefully everyone that smokes will read the article in USAToday about the millions of taxpayer dollars that are having to be spent to dispose of all the lighters being confiscated at the airports.

So if you smoke or know anyone that does remind them to leave them at home. You can buy them at resort and airport gift shops.

You can absolutely put lighters(cheap or otherwise) in your "checked" luggage. And if they'd put an exchange program into effect... they wouldn't have to dispose of the lighters at the airports. Drop one off at one airport and pick one up at your destination... if they have one available there that is.

Now THAT is a really great idea. MY friend who flew to London in Nov told me that people were leaving lighters around the ashtrays at the airport...so people can use them and smoke while waiting for their flights. I suppose we could look at the smokers area of MCO for a lighter...or Dsis can stick one in her checked bag and hope it doesn't get found. But I think she is just going to buy a new one when we arrive, and pitch it when we leave.

Thanks, Sammie, I searched out info from that article and Dsis will be leaving her cheapo lighter at home, instead of taking chances.

ONE MORE HOUR TILL I GET PICKED UP!!

The TSA agents who confiscate your lighters are just selling them later to airport patrons who are without lighters. Really, it's been seen at multiple airports.

I don't understand all the fuss and confusion. The TSA rules are quite clear.

Lighters with fluid in them are not permitted about airliners, period, regardless of whether in carry-ons or in checked luggage. I'm not talking about what people have gotten away with, I'm talking about the rules.

Safety matches (normal, everyday matches) are permitted ONLY in carry-ons (or on your person), up to 4 books per person. Matches are NOT permitted in checked luggage (again, a safety concern). So-called "stage matches" or "strike anywhere" matches are not permitted anywhere on an airliner.

Simple. Lighters, no. Matches, carry-on only.

And by the way, yes, I care about EVERYONE following these rules -- we're not talking about refillable mugs or pool hopping, we're talking about keeping highly combustible liquids off an airliner.

Eric,

I agree. And, if you read the TSA site carefully, putting items in your checked bags that are not allowed CAN get you fined and/or arrested. Now, granted, they most likely will not make a huge deal about it, but they COULD.

And I am not willing to take that chance to avoid spending $1 when I get to Orlando. We stop at a gas station before our trip and get a couple books of safety matches. We buy a lighter at the resort store, use it during the trip, and either give it to someone coming into MCO, or leave it on the ashtray rim outside of MCO so someone who needs it can take it.

The only type of lighter allowed in checked bags is a Zippo-type lighter with the fluid completely removed. And you would have to buy fluid in Orlando, because the can of lighter fluid is not allowed in your checked bags, either.

I, like Eric, have NO problem with highly flammable fluids being banned from luggage. :)
