This is so funny! I was just getting to make this same post! My wife just noticed a bug on our wall, and I said, "That's not a bug- it's a firefly.", to which she said, "They are called lightning bugs, not fireflys." And I thought to myself- "Let me go ask on The Dis" ,but it was already here! :rotfl2: BTW, I use either one, just whatever first pops in my mind! :rotfl:

Now that I think about it maybe that's why glow sticks were invented, to save the lightening bugs :rotfl:

I've never seen them in California. I went to Wisconsins once and I saw a zillion of those things! It's so amazing.

I call them entertainment when you are 12 ;)

I've always referred to them as Lightning bugs.

No lightening bugs in TX? My DH was wondering tonight if they are everywhere in the US or not. Interesting...

I read somewhere that the males fly in the air and the females lay on the ground. The flashing is their way of attracting each other.

Probably more info then you wanted to know, but I thought I'd share anyway.

I call them fireflies and there are none here in Hawaii either. Could someone take a picture of them for me. I like seeing them on t.v. Taking about things not here in Hawaii, there are no hummingbirds, and I had seen my first hummingbird in Las Vegas, then another in California.

There are many, many, many lightening bugs in east Texas! I use to play with the suckers back when I was younger, then toss them in a jar. I always let them go, of course :earboy2:

I have called them by either name. We rarely discuss them since we don't have them where I live.

I see them here in the Dallas area a lot.

In CA I only saw them in one place...the loading area for Pirates. ;)

I've never noticed any in Frisco or Plano but we used to see them a lot in the woods closer to Houston. I've always called them fireflies but they're also called lightening bugs in Texas.

One year we were in the Ozarks for the fourth of July. The fireworks display was being held by a lake and it seemed like there were fireflies everywhere. DS was fascinated since he'd never seen one before. :)

Butt-light-bugs! :rotfl2: Those are some funny bug stories guys!

Anyone else have any funny bug stories?? I smushed one once when I was a kid just to see what happened. But then I was too grossed out to do it again! EWWWWWWWWWW! :teeth:

Remember how they used to make your hands stink after catching them?

I was helping my daughter help her with a kindergarten project about fireflies. What we discovered was that they live mostly in the East...fewer occurences west of Dallas.

We found a few in San Antonio, but they were rare.

I have never seen any here in Colorado either. I used to love catching them and putting them in a jar when I live in Tenn, also visiting Grandma in KY.

Different species of lightning bugs have different patterns of signals so that they attract the opposite gender of the same species. And apparently sometimes the females will intentionally flash the pattern of another species, and then EAT the poor fella who responds!

BTW, I call them by both names interchangeably.

Use both interchangably... doesn't matter which to me :)
