Light reading for Disney trip?

I used to like Fern Michaels, until I read the Sisterhood series. They get ridiculous after awhile, and the continuity is off.

Wow! These are great suggestions and I will be following up on a bunch of them.

but I really enjoy Carl Hiassen books. They aren't exactly mysteries, sort of crime novels, but the crimes tend to be things like political corruption. It hardly matters though because the stories are really all about these outrageous characters. The books are funny and smart and weird and they're really enjoyable reading. Plus, they're mostly set in Florida, which is even better, right? He even has a book, I think it's called "Native Tongue", which is set around a theme park. Be warned, he does not have nice things to say about theme parks generally, and Disney specifically.

I guess I don't hate mysteries THAT much because I've read Carl Hiassen and loved him, although some parts are just plain gross. For all C.H. lovers I strongly recommend checking out Lawrence Shames- always a fun read although I haven't found anything new from him in ages. Where are you Lawrence??? Also I have read & enjoyed Stephanie Plum series as well as the #1 Ladies Detective Agencies. I don't really consider these "mysteries" more like light comedies with crimes thrown in.

Ha ha on the Harry Potter books. My DD is the only child on the planet who has all the books but has only made her way partway into Book 3. I of course have read them all but these are way too heavy to fit in my luggage for a reread.

My family is bugging me to get a Kindle (Xmas and b-day coming up soon) but I've resisted. There's just something about holding a real book that enhances my experience.

I love Diana Gabaldon as well!

If you want a thinner book that's a fun read try Charlaine Harris' books. She has a few series going on but the one I'm reading is refered to as the Southern Vampire Series aka "the Sookie Stackhouse" books or the books that True Blood is based on.

These are some of my favorites too! I also like the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer - I read the first one while on vacation in WDW a couple of years ago.

Another favorite - the Mitford series by Jan Karon is great too. I guess you can tell I like serialized fiction!

I love Laurie R. King too but she is definitely a mystery writer...

Regarding the Kindle - I borrowed my husband's to see if I'd like it. My concern too was the "physical" experience ... that concern lasted about 2 minutes .. laugh .. I LOVE it and have asked for one for Christmas...

2 intersting observations .. with mysteries I was definately one to skip to then end after a couple chapters.. mostly to see if it was worth the read .. laugh .. with the Kindle I don't ..

Also - I read MUCH faster .. (this can be a bad thing.. laugh) .. I truly believe it has to do with the time it takes to turn the page .. it's just a push of the button ..

I LOVE the way I can change the size of the font ..

Also - you can find free books out there ..

To me it's SO worth it!

I'd highly recommend a Kindle or other e-reader. I've had one for a couple of years. Wasn't sure I would like it, but it's awesome. That way if you don't like what you're reading, or finish early, you can browse and download another book/mag/paper.

If you're a reader, I'm sure you've already read these. But I will always recommend anything by Wally Lamb. Very easy to put down and come back to later. Because they're long, you might only need to pack one.

Just got the new NookColor mainly for my Disney trip.

I recently read the Mediator series by Meg Cabot. Sort of a teenage series but very light and fun reading. Also like her "Boy" series (Boy Next Door, Every Boy Has One... " You don't have to think too much to read them. Great for standing in lines.

The NookColor is a little heavy, but it's fabulous. I can buy books pretty much from anywhere. With the kindle, you're relegated to Amazon books.

I am going to 2nd the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris.... I started the books after the show and got hooked. The writing is not super high quality but it has great stories in fun predicaments. I've read them all they are about 300 pages very easy to read. You can find them many times in paperback at half price bookstore or reasonable at Walmart.

Have you ever read Kate Atkinson? Her 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum' was great and fairly light (though maybe not the most cheerful thing to read at the World). Also, you say you check out a lot of books from the library, so if you do go for an eReader I recommend one that allows ePub documents. My library and many others offer free books for download in that format. Have fun!

David Balducci has two new books out. I cannot wait to get my hands on them. And they are definitely light reading. I have a trip planned for next month and I am scouring this thread thoroughly to gain some insight as to what I should pack.

Granted this probably won't apply to TOO many people but maybe one or two of you. If you happen to be pregnant, and aren't completely sick of pregnancy books, or really even just a recent mommy, you'd probably really enjoy "Pregnancy Sucks: What to do when your miracle makes you miserable". It's hysterical. It's pretty much your average joe of a woman (average jane?) writing about what the doctors don't tell you, the nitty gritty reality rather than the blissful image of pregnancy some people try to convince you of. There's also little anecdotes from other mommies about their experiences. Lots of good info, but presented in a super funny way, written like she's just talking to you, rather than the dry "At week 32, your fetus has grown to XXcm and XXlbs, and most mothers may be feeling slight discomfort" this book is more like "At week 32, your kid about the size of a potato and you probably want the little beast out of you"

I reckon this is just the geek in me, though I always make it a point to buy a few extra comic books (usually in the form of trades). I read enough IT administrator guides as it is, so I don't feel like bringing any of those along. I'll also buy my daughter (age 3) a few Disney comics for her to read/look at.
