I teach Kindergarten.

The little girl whose seat is closest to my desk was found to have head lice today.

I always keep my sweater and coat on my desk chair...probably about 3 or 4 feet away from this girl's head.

I had my head checked twice by the school secretary, nothing. Should I be concerned about bringing my coat and sweater in the house? I was thinking of washing it all in hot water, just in case, but is that enough precaution? I've never dealt with lice before - just not sure what to do. Thanks!

I think they would be fine. Get used to them being a kindergarten teacher lol.

Another kindergarten teacher here. Unless the items were touching her hair, you should be fine. Lice crawl, they don't jump.

Another tip--go out and buy some tea tree oil shampoo. Lice do not like the smell and will stay away. I always keep it on hand for when there's an outbreak at our school.

Organix makes a tea-tree & mint shampoo (and conditioner) I got some at Ulta
( B1G1) but have also seen it at Walmart, Target & grocery store, about $6-7 a bottle.

When my kids had lice, I got checked out at "the lice squad"... one of those professional nit-pickers. You freak because you sit near a kid? I lived with 2 who roll on my rug, snuggle in my bed, sit on my couch, and got lice :scared1:

Anyway, the pro was trying to sell me a mint-spray to repel the lice. So apparently they don't like mint either. Hence why I suggest the tea-tree/mint shampoo :thumbsup2

That's the same brand I have, LOL. I got it at Walmart one night when I was freaking out over 2 kids in my class having it. It's in a lime green bottle.

You can also buy tea tree oil at the drugstore or Walmart next to the vitamins. Add a couple of drops to your own shampoo as a repellent.

just went around my daughters kdg class. I never saw it on her, but as a precaution slathered her hair with Olive Oil one night, washed most of it out and the rest out the next day. Apparently Olive Oil suffocates anything.

Thanks for the tips. Not freaking out - just wondering what I can do at home to possibly avoid getting it myself. I really know nothing.

But I have two little daughters in preschool and 3 sick days left for the year, so I'm trying to be thorough!

Not nits - nits have to be combed. And my girls have been using fairy tails shampoo and spray for 3 years, and have gotten it twice. The last round, I went to a professional, and so far, so good. I even paid $50 to have myself checked (I was good).

Lice have been through several of our schools a number of times. Kids ended up with them once.

If I remember, if you take anything you suspect of being able to transfer the lice and put it in an airtight bag for several days, it will all any nits to hatch and die off.

I believe rosemary-infused shampoos and conditioners also help repel lice.

My ods had it this year for the first time. He was the only one to get it in the family, thank goodness. It has been extremely bad this year in our region. They had more cases of lice in that month then they had all year last year. Anyway, from what I understand, lice are not very hardy. So once they are off the hair, they die quite easily so it is rare to get it from clothes etc (rare, but not impossible). Most lice transfer from head to head. I should not have been surprised (I was thought!) because a good friend from his class had it the month or so before. Ods only had the knits and nothing live so it was not too bad getting rid if it. A few hours of picking the nits out and he was good. I sent the whole family to the clinic to be tested out and we were all fine. I now know what to look for, nits look a lot like dandruff but do not move. So if the white part does not move when you blow or move the hair strain, it could be a nit.
