Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA ?

[ Do they have a movie police person there at the local theater? Or even worse, is there a Liberty student representative spying on the students[/QUOTE]

In one word...YES!!

Rated R movies aren't allowed on campus, and your not allowed to watch rated R movies at the local theaters.

How do they know? If you are of age, what is stopping you from going to the movies with friends? Do they have a movie police person there at the local theater? Or even worse, is there a Liberty student representative spying on the students?

That just seems bizarre for an off campus rule. I understand on campus, but off campus is just nutty.

You agree to abide by the rules. The hope is that the students that go there and agreed to follow the rules will. But if people see you out at an R rated film and know that you are a LU student they may very well tell an RA they saw you. Once again though, by choosing to go there, you choose to abide by the rules. If you don't, you run the risk of getting in trouble.

Boy it sounds like a bunch of Pharisees.

Didn't Jesus even say he who is without sit cast the first stone?

So Student A gets in trouble for seeing the lastest movie (Lets just say Meet the Spartans) but the person who reports them may do another sin (lets just say swear or say the lords name in vain)

Who is the worst "sinner"? The movie goer or the reporter?

Guess they couldn't see "The Passion of the Christ" then? Wasn't it rated R?

I just have a problem w/ my college telling me what movies I can and can't see w/ I am old enough to get in.

**PlainJane, I'm just using your text to quote, not meaning to argue w/ you or anything.**:)

Actually, Mel Gibson came to LU to discuss the film with Dr. Falwell before it came out. There was a big deal in the paper about it here. If I recall correctly Dr. Falwell praised him for his accuracy. It's been awhile though, so I'm not sure. I think that the students would have been allowed to see it. I don't know.

Well, how can I put this (without getting points)?: If I found out my kid's teacher got his/her degree from Liberty, I'd ask for a different teacher.

I agree with PP. Do your homework on Liberty.

i am in this boat

Oh, it's fine, I didn't think you were attacking me. I personally watch rated R movies. If I ever went there, I would just watch them at home. I know for some it's just the principle of losing that freedom that bothers them.

Although some may look at it positively, I doubt that the positive responses will outweigh the negative responses, especially if your DD wants to teach in NJ or northeast.

This is true, although it is not fair and discriminatory. I attended a national HR conference where Liberty, Bob Jones, and Regent universities were the subject of (informal) lunchtime conversation. There were some people at my table who said that they would be reluctant to hire someone with a degree from those schools because of perceived self-righteousness and inability to function in a diverse work environment. In each case, the school founders were a big part of the reason why the schools were regarded with disdain.

Like I said, I do not agree with this approach and I have interviewed Liberty grads.

The difference the students at LU choose to be there. They go in knowing the rules. I suppose they could choose to go to a school that allows them to see Rated R films if they decide that's a big deal for them. I don't know.

Maybe someone will report the other person for swearing, I don't know. But you're not forced to attend there. Its a private school, you choose to go. I chose to go b/c it was a free ride for me. I went to whatever movies I wanted and pretty much did what I wanted. Alot of which would have gotten me in big trouble had I been caught. But, had I been caught I would of had to face the consequences since I knew what i was doing was against the rules of the school I chose to go to.

Thanks, I was just curious and couldn't remember much about it.

I just needed to chime back in. A degree from Liberty is just as good as a degree from anywhere else. They are fully accredited in every subject they teach. I have completed BIO 101 and the Creation Studies class and I now know alot more about evolution than I ever had before. The difference is that they actually present both sides. Anyone that questions the qualifications of the teachers should read their bio's on the website. They are not Liberty graduates teaching Liberty students.

Saying that you wouldn't hire a Liberty graduate is simply religious discrimination.

To the minds of many employers, a degree from Liberty is nowhere as good as a degree from a university where they allow freedom of thought.

You're just kidding yourself here.

Just because they don't think like you doesn't mean there is no freedom of thought. It also doesn't mean that its not a good education just because they chose to do it in a Christian environment.

I think people just want to bad mouth it because it was Dr. Falwells school. Like I said, I know people that have gone on from Liberty to be very successful. I have had no problem a getting job with my degree.

I also think its one thing to state your opinion of a school. Another to make a rude comment directed at someone about the school they go to.

If they teach creationism as SCIENCE, well, then enough said.

And if they don't trust their kids to live the "Christian life" without turning the college into a police state, why should I trust one of their students enough to hire one of them?

Falwell was an evil man, so I wouldn't send my child to a school he started.

Are you kidding me? As a private school they have a right to set their rules however they please. Like I said, if someone doesn't like them, they don't have to go there. But it doesn't mean the kids can't be trusted with a job. Thats just ridiculous. Its just a reason to discriminate against them. Just because you don't like Dr. Falwell doesn't mean that the kids that come out of the school are uneducated or untrustworthy. If you don't like Dr. Falwell that's fine. But I think that saying he is evil is a bit dramatic.

i'm a creationist who believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God

however, i would not want my children to attend liberty, bob jones, or oral roberts university

i do not like what they stood/stand for and the ideals upon which their universities are built

there was at least one student suing oru because their diploma had been devalued by the recent scandal and when that came out, many other alumni mentioned that they felt their degrees were worthless, as well

There are many adjectives I could describe Falwell with. Evil is just the top of the list.

A person who lived such an insular, secluded life would be a bad fit for most of the jobs I had to hire for.

You had to be willing to face-- and read about -- all the ugliness of the world, way worse than any R movie. So if you can't handle an R movie you can't handle my line of work.

What makes you think they all live secluded lives? Many of them come from really tough backgrounds and LU provides a wonderful home for them.

Real life has nothing to do with R rated movies. Do I have to go see an R rated movie filled with sex and fake violence to understand the world? If anyone bases their view of the real world on some movie I think they have bigger issues than what University they go to.

I know a lot of people dislike Dr. Falwell, mostly because of things they have seen or heard on the news or whatever. And yes, he's said things that I shuddered at. I think sometimes he said things without thinking and they came out wrong. But he really did love people and has done an enormous amount of good in our community and beyond. Its unfortunate that so many people ignore that because they disagree with his religous beliefs. And everyone has a right to their opinion, but I think to classify him as evil is overly dramatic and frankly kind of silly. There is plenty of evil in the world. They kill and rape and destroy lives everyday.

You can spin it any way you like. He was worse in many ways because he spread his hate and evil thoughts throughout the world.

I think I'd figure if an employer would not hire me because I graduated from LU (or any Christan college) than I'm better off not working for a jerk like that.

I'd love for my DD to think about attending a Christian college. She is not although she does attend a Christian school now (8th). She's really leaning towards a college with Presbyterian affiliation (but I would not call it a "Christian school").

My husband went to a college where they couldn't go to movies without permission (and that was rare.) In fact, they couldn't go ANYWHERE without permission. There was a strict dress code. There was a strict curfew. No phones, no visitors in the dorms EVER.

OK. It was a military college.

But hey, if they don't trust their kids to live the "military life" without turning the college into a police state, why should we trust one of their students enough to let them fly multi-million dollar aircraft?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge Liberty fan. My cousins went there. I wouldn't let Russ go there. (His only options are W&L or UVa anyway.) But military college can also be insular and secluded. Heck, much as I loved W&L, it was definitely insular and secluded, not religiously but politically.
