I was thinking to try shady brook instead of the store brand this year? Is shady brook any good for the extra cost?

I've never heard of Shady Brook but a few years ago I bought a Mar-Val and it was the best we ever had. Sadly, I haven't seen a Mar-Val in our area since then.

My second favorite is Honey Suckle White.

I bought a Shady Brook last year & it was good. I prefer Butterball but for the price is was perfect. I bought Shady Brook again this year.

Which ever local farm has the best price? :confused3

When I was younger we used to go to one farm and you could actually pick the one you wanted in late Summer, and they'd call you when it was ready in November.

Looking back it seems kind of strange to think that we'd go and "visit" a bird that we were eventually going to eat.

Nowadays we just go to the farm and pick from the already prepared ones.

I don't think brand name makes a huge difference. I've had Butterballs that weren't so good and WalMart no-names that were delicious and vice versa.

Natural turkey from a local farm, no hormones or antibiotics. Commercial turkeys are injected with all kinds of "flavor enhancing" chemicals. Ick!

I bought a honey suckle white one today. They were $.69lb and the smallest ones I could find.

The store brand in our old town used to have the best turkeys. We bought them for years and never had a bad one. Since we have moved I think I have only gotten two and I think they were Butterballs?? Both times our Thanksgiving plans changed last minute-hosts got sick-so I just got what was left at the store at 11:00 pm on Wednesday :lmao:.

Name brand doesn't matter. It's the skill of the cook that determines the quality of the finished product. Who's the absolute best? My mama.

I rarely have a choice. We have been married 13 years and we have only made 2 Thanksgiving turkeys. Cost is usually a factor for us, so we opt out of the "natural" birds and usually get the chemical laden ones.

We may have made a bird for Christmas a time or two, but I Cannot remember.

Once again, no turkey prep this year as we are traveling for Turkey day. And Christmas will be a ham from Honeybaked ham company.

My personal favorite? The Butterball Boneless turkey.

This year I am doing one of those with a honey-spice glaze, and DH is deep-frying a bone-in turkey... we are hosting a large gathering. For the bone-in turkey we bought a brand I had never heard of before at Walmart - the price was right - I usually just buy the store-brand or whatever's cheapest.

By the time he brines the thing for 12 hours, spice-rubs under the skin, and deep-fries it, no one could tell the difference between it and any other brand anyway. :cloud9:

http://www.kochsturkey.com/ local and "Cerified Humane® & never receive antibiotics or growth promotants at any time... I can drive to the actual place and pick one up.. apparently they are sold at whole foods as well.

I just bought an 11 pound Shady Brook turkey for .58 cents per pound, that's only $6.25! What a deal. :thumbsup2

We had Shady Brook turkey last year, and it was good. To be honest if I did a blind taste test between all the brands....I won't know the difference! Turkey is turkey to me.
