Let's Talk about Haunted Mansion

I love the haunted mansion because it's such a classic ride. The entire attraction is composed of simple magic tricks. My favorite part is the ballroom. Just some light and glass creates such wonder.

I agree! The Haunted Mansion is one of the best Disney has to offer. We leave for our trip this Saturday, and unfortunately the Mansion will be closed our entire stay, I'm so sad!:(

Check MDE. On another Thread, quite a few posters have scheduled HM FPs for December 13th and onward!:)

Do this! I checked last night and got FPs on the 18th before MVMCP - so excited, its my favorite!

HM has always been one of our top attractions to hit while at WDW. We have not been to Haunted Mansion since the new interactive queue was implemented (it was out of commission for just that, the last time we were there). It looks as though HM will be opening earlier than planned and while we are there!

Should I get a FP for this or go through the line? I would like to see the interactive queue (as I haven't seen it as yet), but...I'm afraid not to FP at this point thinking a lot of people will opt for FP once they realize it is now open with yet more new features.

What to do? What to do?

My favorite part of the HM is the ballroom dancing scene. But it also makes me laugh, because being a ballroom dancer I have noticed that the ghosts have their arms all wrong (on the opposite side they are supposed to). Guess Disney uses a mirror or some sort of reflection to achieve the special effects and thus the arms end up on the wrong side. (Correct way is lady's left arm up with hand on man's right arm and man's right arm up and around lady's left back. Arms are out and hands are clasped on the lady's right side and the man's left side.)

My next favorite part is the ghosts riding with you and switching your heads.

1. What do you love about it?

  • It's beautiful
  • it's smart (it's packed with so many references from literature and history going back hundreds of years that it's hard to count them all)
  • it relies mainly on super-elaborate versions of old-fashioned stage magic (Pepper's Ghost is over 400 years old!)
  • it's complex, with so many layers upon layers of effects you can barely take them all in at once
  • For most of its life, it's been one of the most complete pieces of Gesamtkunstwerk in the parks, seamlessly tying multiple art forms together in one package
  • It celebrates the weird and unusual

2. What's your favorite part?
Either the anticipation of walking up to it, and allowing yourself to savor the atmosphere, or the finale in the graveyard, where all the tension that's been building up is released.

3. Do you find it scary?
I allow myself to find it scary. The Mansion is very theatrical, and the willing suspension of disbelief is very important. Enjoyment depends just as much on the attitude you bring to it as it does on what it brings to you.

In the afterlife, ladies get to lead!

Impressed that you would notice such detail!

Count me I as a fan of the ride!! My ds9 loves it too...we watched the cheesy Haunted Mansion movie the other night and enjoyed looking for all the ride references!

HM is easily mine and DH's favorite ride in the parks. We even decided to go to MK our first day on our last trip so we wouldn't miss it when it closed for renovation. My favorite scene (since I was a little kid at the one in DL) is the dueling pictures. Everytime I wait to watch them duel. I sing along with the music, and try to take in as many details as possible each time I ride and yet I see something new everytime. DH and I have quite a bit of HM artwork. Also, despite riding it my whole life the little doll at the end with "Hurry back, hurry back, be sure to bring your death certificate" creeps me out. I love that it stills gets to me after all these years.

In regards to the ballroom dancers looking "wrong", I have a feeling that's because they are "right" and then the Pepper's Ghost trick with the glass/mirror flips the image so that they look wrong. You think the powers-that-be at Disney would have noticed that and fixed it (an easy fix)...

I guess it just never occurred to them. And really, how many people are going to notice that anyway. Besides, there is so much to look at in that scene that if you weren't specifically looking at the dancers to see how realistic they looked, you wouldn't even notice. It is still my favorite scene for all that is going on, but I do get a chuckle out of it each time I see it.
