Let's talk about Boma

So I'm not a super adventerous person when it comes to food but I've gotten better about trying new things over time. My DH wants to try out Boma when we go to Disney in May. Is there enough "normal" food for us picky eaters there or will I be stuck eating zebra domes and drinking water all night? Those of you who have been can you give me pictures and/or descriptions of things you have eaten that you thought were good.

My father was so apprehensive about going to Boma'.
Saying things like, I don't want to eat roasted elephant ear, that is just plain crazy. Anyway, he went and it is one of his favorite restaurants now. Everything is "normal" there. Same food you could obtain just different preparations, different spices. If, you are still put off. You can eat from the kiddie section, with your water, and your zebra domes.

There is a kiddy table with chicken nuggets, plain pasta, meatballs sometimes, mac and cheese. Plus there is prime rib, salmon or pork loin. There are more adventurous items but that's the best part...it's a buffet so try it and if you don't like it, try something else. I'm positive you'll find something you'll like.

I love soup, and they have a wider variety to choose from than most places. Don't be afraid to try just a tiny bit. If you don't like it, pick up another bowl and try another one.

Same with all the other items. Put something on your plate you might normally skip, and see how you like it. The food is not seasoned to be spicy as in heat, but spices used for flavor. It's a buffet! You're never committed to eat everything if you don't like it.

And don't let the name "Potatoes with Afritude" throw you. They taste like seasoned potatoes I can get almost anywhere. The carving station works for those who like basic beef slices, and there is usually roasted chicken and a fish dish, too.

The kids' buffet is the "safe" zone for many, but I think most people are surprised by how much they enjoy Boma for its regular dishes.

We tried it for the first time on our last trip and LOVED it!!!

DD isn't very adventureous and she found plenty of things there to eat. I wasn't crazy about the salad offerings, but the meats, soups and sides were really tasty...the desserts were AMAZING!!! Do not miss the cocomisu!!! :cloud9:

I think Boma tries to be exotic, but falls pretty short.
Really, the flavors are pretty bland. I remember tasting one particular spice over and over again in about 1/3 of the dishes, which was a bit comical. We haven't bothered returning because we thought it would be better than it was based on all the rave reviews.

We really enjoyed Boma on our last trip. I guess if you are super-picky, you may not like it, I found it to be exotic-yet-familiar. I could stay there all day just eating the soups and desserts!

We went to Jiko for my sister's birthday. I was very disappointed. The meal cost over $400 for four of us and I had almost nothing to eat (vegetarian)
BOMA on the other hand was such a great meal for us all that we went back three days later. The tastes are exotic (and authentic to food I had in Africa) but the ingredients are mostly things you would be used to. The spices may be new but there is nothing strange or "odd" to eat. As a vegetarian I found it a wonderful change from the usual fare at Disney.
There are meats and fish but also many vegetable dishes, potato and corn dishes, soups and wonderful breads. I like spice and found most dishes were moderately spiced and probably very authentic as they were.
I wish I could remember our server's name, it was 2003 and we still talk about him today!
We loved it and plan on going twice in May. In fact my 50th birthday dinner will be at BOMA! If you're there May 15th - I'll be wearing the birthday button : ) please stop by.
P.S. We are looking forward to Tusker House too.

Boma is one of our favorite restaurants for dinner. Even my 4yo loves it. It realy isn't as "exotic" as you might seem. There are foods that are "different" there but most everything is familiar to most people in some way. The prime rib and ham is great as are the sauces you can get to dip them in. The desserts are very good also. It would be very hard to for us to make a trip to Disney without visiting here. I highly recommend it!

yes, the prime rib was fantastic! There is enough normal food... as the PP said, it's the spices... my mom is not very adventurous and she LOVED the food!

We love Boma- there are lots of options - we had prime rib and bbq ribs plus roasted chicken. I admit we love the seafood too. My dining review http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1763042 has pics of our Boma dinner. Also already noted the one serving pod has chicken nuggets, mac 'n'cheese etc.

We ate there last fall and we enjoyed it. My husband, a meat and potatos kind of guy, went crazy for the Prime Rib and liked the Potatoes with Afritude, Durban Spiced Roasted Chicken, and Malabu Pepper Steak. Our server was excellent too!

Our family LOVES Boma's.

As others have mentioned, there are some very "normal" offerings on the buffet, and some more exotic stuff.

I actually think it's GREAT for picky eaters because, even if you have to hit the kids buffet (and lots of people do!), you will have lots of variety in the "old stand bys". In addition, you get the opportunity to try small portions of things that look like you MIGHT like them, without committing to them, or worrying about what happens if it turns out you DON'T like them.

Thanks for all the reponses. I love prime rib and potatos and soup so it sounds like I shouldn't have any problem finding something to my tastes. As some of you had said at least with it being a buffet I can always try and then I don't have to get more if I don't like it.

One other question, I've heard of the zerbra domes as these great deserts that they have at Boma. What are they exactly? This might be a scandelous question on these boards but I've seen pictures and wasn't sure if it was like a chocokate fudge chunk or what.

They're...well...little bites of heaven.

Small round piece of sponge cake, topped with kahlua flavored moose, and drizzled with white and dark chocolate.

(they've gotten a bit smaller than when the pic at the above link was taken...though IMHO they taste the same.

We went first time in Dec and we saved what we thought could be the best for last. There were 4 of us and we decided not to come back. I am the pickest along side my son in law.. I did not like it. I could not find one thing I liked. It is not worth going for Zebra domes or desserts. There were not that many choices and the domes are not that special to us. The food is odd. I like plain mashed potatoes and those are not plain. Not enough reg type veggies and the salads were not good as well. Never saw the soup. Maybe it was a bad night but I have talked to others that have felt the same. If we had not been on the ddp I would have been upset we paid that much for so little choices. We all had to get something else to eat about an hour later. So this is not for picky eaters who like the ordinary foods in life. Then on the other ende of plain foods on the grounds Trails end was beyond plain just boring no taste. But give us Ohanas, 50's Prime, Whispering Canyon, and we'll be there..This is all in our opinion], But you will just have to try it your self to decide if it is right for you next time.

I have a question about Boma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been there twice before... once for breakfast another for dinner. Just wondering though........

We plan on going there for dinner the night we arrive. We also plan to be at Blizzard Beach and then going straight there for dinner (6:55pm reservation).

I will probably have a cute skirt and tank/tshirt with my bathing suit underneath (or maybe I can just stuff it in my beach bag)... probably the same for my friend (we won't be getting out hair wet def!!). If her boys dry off and throw a tshirt over there shorts and they'll probably have runners on or those croc things... will they be okay?

...I don't remember what the dress code. I wouldnt go there looking like I just came from the beach... but would we be okay?

You'll be just fine.

Attire is casual. You'll see lots of people rolling in directly from the parks, in shorts and t-shirts. Others will be rolling in from the pool.....in shorts and tshirts...but with wet hair.

:)

I have 3 step-kids who have never been very adventurous when it came to food. Our first trip, in 04, I booked with much fear and trepidation. The summer of 07 ws a slam-dunk (sorry-watching basketball as I post); this is a must-eat every trip!
