Let's Share Gas Shortage Info

North of Atlanta suburb was calm until mid-afternoon Wednesday when the word was traveling that other areas around town were already limiting your purchases and raising prices. I had filled up on Tuesday at $2.59 and now our area is $2.89 - haha, if they have gas. Around here stations had HUGE lines, and some had police directing traffic because it was spilling out on to busy roads. Stations became credit card or prepay only. Multiple stations around here are now bone dry. Have seen some stations around $5 a gallon.

I know the prices are terrible and I get sick when I fill up, but I think the panic here is more related to the pipelines being down. They HOPE to have some fuel piping by the weekend. In the meantime we are already down 4 of our 10 days of reserves. With the holiday weekend, those reserves will be gone by Tuesday if no fuel is brought in. People are concerned about getting to work next week.

I am considering buying our teachers gas cards. Some of them drive a long distance to work and this certainly has got to be a drain on them financially.

If I were going to be traveling I would make sure I filled up periodically along the highways away from cities. Probably alittle more sanity there too.

ps You are not being selfish. We have a trip planned for a gulf coast beach, that was spared this time, in a few weeks. But half of it is still rebuilding from a year ago with Ivan. We are still going, still spending our dollars because that in turn helps their economy. Florida has had some tough years lately, go spend some dollars there !

There was a four-car line at each pump, and the gas was $3.15/gallon.

Gas in central Pennsylvania went from $2.599/gal yesterday morning to $2.999 this morning. Local scuttlebutt is that by tomorrow morning it will be $3.11. Now, what I don't understand is that the gas that cost $2.599 a gal yesterday and was still in their holding tanks at the station this morning is now $2.999.
How did that gas "go up" in price overnight. "They" didn't pay anymore for it when their holding tanks were filled up a couple of days ago.

Wonder how many people will die firey deaths when the gas cans in their trunks explode in car accidents??? That is so dangerous. I mean will I fill up the tank for the lawn equipment I go directly home and take it out....

I heard in NC if you are caught with gas in a can inside the vehicle it is a $250.00 fine no questions asked.

Still chuckling about the gas cans exploding in trucks. Unless you wreck and your car slides on its side for 1/4 mile theres not much chance of that. Haha. Someone being a bit paranoid. Ive worked around explosive liquids all my life. They usually only explode when ignited. Just dont smoke, and if the gas can has sealed lids even thats not a concern. Kinda reminds me of "Flaming Death" on Bugs Life!!!
Were heading out again this Sunday. Anyone know the prices in southern GA where all the big stations compete? That will be the biggest help for us.
Something to consider... doing the math, the straightest distance between two points is a straight line. (Basic algebra) When your weaving all over the road and switching lanes continually to pass all the slow drivers that has to add to your trip distance. Reduced traffic = less lane changing, and means less overall distance and if you can just get in the slow lane and set the cruise control wouldnt it average about the same as paying 50 cents a gallon less and fighting all the traffic? Might be a blessing in disguise. Just a thought. In any event less traffic means safer trip and less headaches.
Now $4.00-$5.00 a gallon, thats a different story!

We also have a trip to FL planned to drive down Saturday and are concerned with the availability of gas, especially in GA. I know the panic yesterday just made a bad situation much worse, but the fact is that the panic did drain some gas stations and we don't know when those tanks will be refilled. That is what concerns us the most.

We have family about an hour north of Orlando who had to drive 15 miles to find a gas station that still had gas so the availability of gas could be a problem the entire way down.

CaptBear...I called the local sheriffs dept here in Davidson County NC and they said there was no law against it. Course it might give you a small buzz if you kept it in there unsealed for any distance! There was a murder here many years back where a guy chopped up a lady with an axe. He had been sniffing gas fumes at a residents barn every morning. He killed the girl immediately after his morning inhale. Gas fumes arent good. As long as your tank is sealed and you havent spilled any gas on the outside of the tank there shouldnt be many fumes, if any at all.

We are going down tomorrow night after work - traveling from Atlanta area to Orlando. Hope to have gas on the way down. Will be checking the activity of gas availablility before we leave. Reports are saying gas should be better next week - but that doesn't help our planned and paid for trip of 9/2-8.

Aunt Polly - feel the same way. So many people without homes right now - problems in New Orleans and Mississippi for the upcoming months. I am donating to the Red Cross and giving what supplies we can to help. Giving blood is another help.

Here's the latest press release. The pipeline is back up and building more and more each day. Interesting though since most of Georgia doesn't even rely on the pipeline for gas. That just shows that a run at the pumps can drain supplies at stations regardless of a real supply shortage or not.

I would say look for gas outside the big cities where people still have their heads screwed on straight.

I live in the metro Atlanta area and last night they were showing the 2 pipelines and that we get the crude out of the pipes and process at the refinaries in Atlanta for gas. Am I incorrect in this news or does Atlanta get from another source?

According to this, Georgia is getting more gas now than even before the storm. The problem is from panic buying which should hopefully settle down. I heard one station sold 4,000 gallons in 45 minutes...they usually sell 3,000 gallons per day. So you can see how some stations have ran out. I would think that once this word gets out, things should settle back down.

I live in southern GA near the Florida line off I-75. We have no gas shortages, but prices are averaging $3.33 today. We are headed to Orlando tomorrow. I am worried about getting gas on Monday for our return trip. I know Orlando has experienced some stations running out. If people continue to panic the shortages there could continue.

Thanks for the report! May I ask which exit you live closest too? I was looking at gasbuddy.com to get an idea of gas prices in your area but I don't think they've been updated with the latest increases.

At Exit 22 all stations are $3.3?. Gas is a little cheaper at Exit 15.
