Lets have a really deep discussion

I let them do it. When we unload the cart we try to put like items together-frozen, refrigerated, canned, etc. Seems to work pretty well. :)

However if I get to the cashier and see a bagger there I put my groceries up in a specific order....like Jenn Lynn said it does seem to help. The store I shop at will box things if you want. I love that! No way the bread can get flattened that way!

Deb, do you ever shop at Fareway? That's the store my husband works at. And, I agree with you. I cringe at the thought of the young kids sacking the groceries if they aren't well trained. When I am the manager of the store, oops.. Did I say ME. I meant DH. :) When DH is managing his own store, I will constantly be watching that. That's the last impression the customers are left with is that carryout.

Hi Madi!! I see we are "neighbors". Actually, I shop at Hy-Vee (sorry!), but now that I know your DH works at Fareway, I'll have to stop in there sometime!!:wave2:

Well, all of the bagger at Fareway are good ones :) My DH is pretty easy to find - notice the big, shiny head below.

I prefer to do it myself. If there is a bagger there, I will help do it and they usually thank me for helping.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the person that won't bag their own and there is no bagger. They stand there while the checker is ringing the items and then they watch as the checker bags their stuff. That really gets me. Unless you are disabled, old or physically unable to bag your groceries, there is no excuse for it. Gee, can you tell this bothers me? lol

Sorry, but I'm that guy. I watch every item scanned to make sure I'm not overcharged (occurs 1 in 2 visits - usually a missed sale price), and billed for 5 gallons of milk when I only have 4 (occurs the other 1 in 2 visits). It is much easier correcting the error before they have rung me up and charged my card. Otherwise I have to go to the courtesy desk (what an oxymoron that is!) and wait all over.

I usually bag after the scanning is done, :teeth: except when I can see a nervous, impatient or pushy shopper behind me, then I watch the bagger bag!

:sunny: Of course if I see a full cart and busy mom with two children, I make sure to tell the bagger that the store manager needs him/her as I'm leaving! Just kidding, the baggers flee when they see me coming!

I really like bagging my own because I like to keep similar items grouped together to make unpacking easier and I like to fill up the bags so I don't have too many to carry in.
I'm the same way! BUT, I don't usually bag my own...too busy with the kids. SO, I unload my cart so things are more likely to end up together. For instance....all the cold items come out first, then I leave a small gap between them and the dry items. Produce goes all together. And bread items are last, so they go on top and don't get crushed.

For me, it's usually that I may not have time to carry everything in at once, so I make sure I at least get all the cold items out. That's easier to do if they're all bagged together. :)

As for loading them up, if I notice them putting only 2 or 3 items per bag, I tell them nicely "Oh, go ahead and load them up. It's a very short walk from the car to the kitchen, and I'd rather have less bags. Thanks for trying not to overload them, though, I appreciate you being so careful."

Greatest thing ever! I like having control over all things in my life, including my grocery bags. :rotfl: I'm also of the mindset that if you want something done right, you should do it yourself. :)

Again Snoopy, I totally agree! :D

If I am at a register with a person I want someone to bag. But it drives me nuts if I am at one of the self check out lanes and someone comes up and starts bagging. If I am doing self check out, let me do it myself.

We don;t have baggers in this area-sometimes if it's slow one of the other cashiers comes to bag..and if it's busy they pull the stockboys off the floor to bag, but usually you do it, or you can stand there and wait for the cashier to ring up all your groceries and than watch her do it. Not something I would ever do.
I always bag my own, and when the cashier is done, she helps too. I don't mind it at all.

Oh me too! I worked in A&P in high school and this was my biggest pet peeve when I worked there.

At my grocery store, there are usually no lines. So while I'm still unloading the cart, the cashier is ringing and the items are being bagged.

But boy, I wish I could bag 'em myself. It seems like they just throw weird items together. And I really hate it when they'll hide like a package of cream cheese in with the canned goods. My canned goods go in my store room in the basement so I always set them at the top of the stairs to take down on my next trip--which might be tomorrow. I do tend to search the bags better since I had to throw the cream cheese away last time!

I was a cashier in high school and part of college. I know how I liked to pack things, so I set my groceries up on the belt. If there is a bagger there, I let them do their job. If not, I don't mind stepping in and doing it myself. The key is how you group on the belt. :p

Edited to add: At the Publix I shop at, if one of the managers sees you bagging your own groceries he or she will come over and do it for you.

Yes I do because I bag them like I put them away at home, so it makes life much easier.

I have a couple of good baggers at my local supermarket who bag them the way I put them on the belt. Others just grab stuff willy-nilly and it makes me crazy!

One of the coolest inventions ever IMO is the new self check-out that is popping up around here. I not only get to bag my own stuff but I get to ring it up too! I'm a freak but I love doing it myself.

Of course, the regular registers are still there too and should be. Most people prefer to use a checker particularly for loaded carts.
